A Raphael Tuck postcard from about 1925 showing a City of London Police Sergeant assisting a couple with their small child across the very busy Bank junction with the Mansion House in the background. The commentary on the reverse of the postcard is entitled "Safety First".
"The control of the traffic by the London Policeman is the constant theme of warm approval from visitors hailing from all over the world. His courtesy and kindness to the aged wayfarer, the stranger or the inexperienced, dazed by the turmoil and traffic of our streets, is equally worthy of a word of praise".

Following the formation of London Transport - the London Passenger Transport Board - in 1933, the undertaking set about a massive programme of investment, modernisation and expansion. One often over-looked change that was instituted was the widespread adoption of fixed bus stops across the Board's massive operating territories that covered red Central area and green Country area buses as well as Green line coaches.
Whereas trams, and their replacements the trolleybuses, had a stronger heritage of fixed stops the 'bus had traditionally been more 'flexible' in terms of where it could be hailed to board and alight. The centre of London had first seen serious experimentation with 'fixed' stops, and the design of the post and flag, in the early 1920s and by the late 1930s this programme was being rolled out across the rest of the city and out into the suburbs. This saw a change in the design of both post and flag with the concrete post, manufactured by LT at the Parsons Green workshops, and the flags themselves being re-designed by Hans Schleger in c.1935 to simplify them and that led to the later 'self-washing' "boat" design.
I have seen the publicity leaflets for the introduction of fixed stops along certain corridors and this leaflet is part of such a campaign. It offers a "set of hints for passengers" advising to signal the driver to show you wish to board the vehicle, the types of stops (request and compulsory) as well as hints on "Safety First".
The leaflet, from July 1938, is printed by the Shenval Press who would develop a reputation for fine work, and ends with the slogan "London Transport wants to serve". Sadly no designer is shown.
Yep, Kas got her 1st tattoo this week!! She has been itching to get one for a long time, and she finally took the plunge.
There are two major decisions to make when you get inked up...what & where. She has always known where (lower hip, i guess you'd call it), but she's gone through many iterations on the "what". She decided over the weekend on the "what", and then it was a matter of scheduling the tat around mine & her mom's schedule. I thought it was sweet that she wanted us there when she did it. Of course I couldn't pass up the opportunity for a photo shoot in the process. :D
When I got my tat, I screamed & cursed heavily during the entire 3 minutes it took to do it. Kas looks like she could be lying on the beach, doesn't she? It took about 90 minutes from start to finish for her tat once the actually inking started (and that was after the artist spent an hour drawing up the design & going through the iterations with Kas to perfect it), and she looked like this the entire time. I was so proud of her! I guess I'm just a wimp. :)
I have a feeling this isn't the only tat she's going to get.

Interesting way to convey the importance of safety :)..Seen along a construction site on the UT Campus. Best seen large Large... I would have preferred a much tighter crop, but without a part of the road the shot would be totally out of context. Suggestions are welcome.

I have seen this road sign a couple of times on flick r it was originally on a wall at the cross roads opposite Hartest institute i can remember it in the 40's & s50's.
I am not sure if you could get from Hartest green to either Londons marble arch or charing cross which are supposed to be the destination in sixty four miles
