2019 was a pretty good year for railfanning, so I'm going to go back through and revisit some of the better moments from the year that I haven't posted yet.
A big storyline in 2019 was the decision by the managers in Lakeville to purchase half a dozen former CSX AC6000CWs for service on the Western New York and Pennsylvania. This meant certain Doom for the six-axle Big MLWs based out of Olean, so I made it a point to improve my coverage. After working an overnight shift and then driving three hours to Olean on no sleep, I was rewarded with an amazing SEXTET of the Bigs. After setting off three of the Bigs and sand cars at South Eldred, 685 and friends show off for the masses on the big sweeping curve south of Port Allegany, Pennsylvania.

Am surprised how deep the storyline in this game goes. Am definitely not a Ubisoft fan, yet this storyline is imho exemplary.

Another one of those disappearing down a route you weren't expecting whilst reading stuff on the internet.
For some reason I had it in my head that Barley Mow was a character from a children's TV programme. I initially thought it was either The Magic Roundabout or Trumpton.
This led to a good hour I won't get back reading about them. I now know that The Magic Roundabout was a French programme that was dubbed into English and the script, storylines and characters bore no reflection on the French version. Dougal was called Pollux ( after Castor and Pollux, so presumably must've had a twin sibling in the French version,) and is supposed to be a drop eared Skye Terrier. Dylan, the hippy rabbit was named after Bob Dylan and in the French version was called Flappy. Now I'm not saying the world is a little messed up because of children's TV programmes but it might go some way to explaining one or two things!
Similar journeys happened for Trumpton, Mr Benn and finally Bod, where I realised I wasn't remembering incorrectly and the farmer was called 'Farmer Barleymow.'
Mr Benn was on immediately after Bod and reminded me of a rather drunken night where a friend came up with the line 'Bennliness is next to Bodliness,' which at the time was hysterical.
This led on to why some pubs are called the Barley Mow which led to the history behind popular pub names in the UK.
It dates back to 1393 under the reign of Richard ll when he ordered pubs to have a sign hanging outside them with a picture on it as the population was largely illiterate. This was done so the monarchy could gather more taxes. Many landlords opted for something to do with the trade they were in, hence pubs with names like The Barley Mow and The Three Barrels etc. Others opted for a Royal theme, thus The White Hart was born, after Richard ll's main heraldic symbol and showed the landlord was loyal to the monarch. The Rose and Crown became popular after the end of The War of the Roses.

The castle of Tornac is located 3 kilometers from Anduze, in the Gard region (France).
The position on which it was built in the 12th century was intended to watch over the passage between the Rhône valley and the Cévennes. After the medieval period, it regained its defensive role during the Wars of Religion in the 17th century.
Getting a bit of practice in before the winter castle contests set in... ;)
I've actually had this on my to-build list for several years, it's a redux of my favorite house in Shinmizu Village. It's also the next installment of my GoH storyline which yes, has been waiting for years.
But the real reason I built it was that I was casting around for ideas for something to donate for C4C--so if you particularly like this MOC, keep an eye out for it! I had fun making it to a much higher standard of stability than my usual (which is not to say that it's terribly stable... just better than usual ;)
I imitated Brother Steven's fall landscape colors and threw some coral in just because. I also noticed that some trees change color from the tips in, so I had fun trying to reduplicate that. Don't recall seeing that done in LEGO before. In general, I'm super happy with the tree, this is not the best angle for seeing it so head on over to my Insta in a couple days for more angles!

After leaving the small town of West Nest, your quest has you journeying North to the land of the elves. You travel to the Fionn Woods where you are to find the stone that looks like the shape of a raven head. Your instructions are clear: you would be greeted by a messenger who would lead you to Elydir, your elven guide to assist you through the elven realm. As you lower your scroll of instructions, you notice the very raven shaped stone you've been searching for! Letting out a loud caw from atop the stone, a large raven with beady black eyes stares at you before it takes to the air and flies ahead of you. It never strays so far you lose track of it. As you journey through the forest, it starts to take on a more magical, mystical feel. Not too long after, the raven turns and guides you to what seems to be a tall stone wall running through the forest, mushrooms and vines and fairy lights all around you. As you approach, you see the raven flap its great wings and land on the outstretched arm of a fair haired elven man who gazes at you with his vibrant green eyes.
"Bwael ligrr, Fiacha," he says approvingly in a melodic voice to the creature as it clicks its beak and gazes up at him. The elf faces you and says in the common tongue, "Greetings, Adventurer. I am Elydir, liaison of my Lord Mhaenal and the Kingdom of Man. Are you the one they sent from West Nest?" "Yes!" you respond, and add, "They sent me with this to assist with the shadow beasts." You hand over the sealed scroll which Elydir takes and looks over. The look of relief washes over his face as he sighs, his brow furrowing slightly. "The Gods have answered our prayers. Follow me. I will escort you to meet my Lord Mhaenal. He's been anxiously awaiting your arrival!"

I've been thinking recently about how the camera image often shows us more than we thought we'd originally seen.
In this scene for example, I remember being captivated by the cool reflections and verdant green shades as I cycled, but I'm not sure I'd noticed the fall of the light in the trees above the bridge on the right, and the shade on the left forming a near perfect pyramid with the water line. Or perhaps subconsciously it had been noted.
We create our own realities.
When I see something and take a photo, that image is informed by my feelings, my state of mind at the time and there's a certain momentum to that, a storyline.
The photo shows a break in that momentum and tells it's own story as a scene preserved in time and space.
I later passed moored houseboats and wondered about that pace of life, the choice to live at a quieter, slower pace must surely bring subtle changes to how we perceive everything.

I generally dream in color and with fairly complex storylines and plots. Don't know why. Been like that since I was a kid. Living in the current crazy the world is practicing, dreams have become a much needed escape...a survival tactic the brain engages when it seems like we're drowning in sweeping political and economic movements which we have only a limited amount of control over.
Last night I had a wonderful one. Not only was I very peacefully underwater with a group of swimming sea turtles, they had also accepted me as one of their own. There was, of course, much more to the dream but this was the peaceful part that came after the tumultuous storm.
