Spending the evening at Zabriskie Point with the 100-400 searching for small detailed landscapes is a lot of fun. This was my favorite composition I found this evening.
This image reminds of ocean waves crashing against each other. I love the pastel colors and contrast between pink and blues.

My wife and I spend the past five days with long time camping friends at the Anza Borrego Desert State Park. I think it's some kind of a law that if you go to a desert park you have to take a sunrise picture.
Other sunrise pictures that I've taken can be seen in my Sunrise/Sunset album. www.flickr.com/photos/9422878@N08/albums/72157606955366056

After spending a late September day scouting from Crested Butte to Durango and back north to near Telluride with practically no pictures captured, the sun finally broke through an opening in the heavy clouds that had produced rain and the season's first snow for most of the day. This is the breathtaking scene that was presented to me.
Capturing attractive landscape images with a telephoto lens is sometimes so easy that it almost feels like cheating. I safely pulled off the road, setup and quickly shot until the sun went back behind the curtain of heavy clouds.
Looking for a fall foliage photography trip? Few locations are better than the San Juan Mountains in Colorado. The aspen trees play a starring role in this spectacular landscape.

Cherie the tortie spends a lot of time on top my SUV when she's not indoors. She's been a wonderfully entertaining and affectionate cat to our family and loves sleeping in Joey's kitty basket in my bedroom.
She's particularly attached to both Joey and Sunny and is quick to follow the first one that walks out of my bedroom. Her transformation from the squeaky short-haired runt that she was, into a long haired tortoiseshell cat is nothing short of amazing.
Cherie didn't look like much when we literally rescued her from our cat hating neighbor last year. She already had a gangrenous tip of her tail at the time and the vet scheduled her for a minor amputation procedure.
We didn't send her for her tail tip amputation as it literally fell off one time. The vet later prescribed Cherie antibiotics and we also cleaned the wound and sprayed it with powdered iodine antiseptic.
Sometimes we wonder how she would have looked like had she had not lost part of her tail. Cherie doesn't miss the tail tip anyway, even though her tail is about two thirds of what it used to be. 😁
After spending the night in Newton, IA, and upon packing up the car to head east, I turned on the scanner and immediately heard the IAIS 510 copying a warrant for the CBBI to head east out of town! Well, what's any good railfan to do in this situation but to give chase when there's good sunlight, and parallel roads?
As such, the second shot of this mini-chase was in the tiny town of Kellogg, Iowa, where the large Heartland Co-Op looms behind it.
In the UK it is against the law to pick, uproot or destroy bluebells....so...

Loved spending time with this Crake hanging out in the slime and muck. It was really tricky to photograph as it just came out when at first light and then hung around for a few minutes at sunrise. Then suddenly it was off hiding in the reeds.
Spending a few days in Switzerland in June.
This is a small part of the Castle at Oberhofen, standing at Lake Thun and after sunset it gave me the right setting for a scenery like this.

Before starting my cemetery project in earnest, I was shooting on a lot of Fomapan 100, using the x-ray film for cloudy days and moodiness. Because of this, some cemeteries that I photographed were done only in Fomapan.
I wanted to reshoot this grave, and did so on New Years Day. I took eight photos on x-ray and this is one of them. The results were mixed, to say the least.
I've written about Mary Dodge before:
There are three stones, but four lie under the ground. Mary Dodge was born in 1849 in Oregon Territory. Her parents were homesteaders. In 1864, at the age of 15, she married Robert Bruce Dodge, more than twice her age.
She gave birth to her first a few months later. Her name was Alace and she died before she was ten months old.
A year later came Thaddeus, and he was healthy, living well into old age.
Her third child, another son, now remembered only as "B.R." was burned to death at the age of one.
Her fourth child was a daughter, Margaret Permelia Dodge. She would live even longer than her brother Thaddeus, to the age of 78.
But her fifth was Julius, and he died on the day he was born, December 2, 1876.
This was also the day Mary, the mother of five children, only two of who survived past their first birthdays.
Mary was 26 or 27 when she died. She was buried with Julius, who is denoted on the stone as: "Also our son Julius."
Two years later, her husband married Ada Lilly Marcy and they had ten more children together. Miraculously, all ten survived well into adulthood. Their mother, Ada, lived until the age of 92.

Spending my time with Carl Zeiss Ultron. Some bokeh exploration, just a two feet from my desk. SOme color toning was done in Darktable. Not because it was needed, but because I was in a bit different mood than Nikon rendering.
Spend some time on the Flaggerschartenhütte in the Sarntaler Alps. The night was foggy and clouds where drifting over the peaks. But suddenly it cleard up and the milkyway appeared - just for a while, but long enough for this shot ;)

I got to spend a couple of hours along the lakefront last week during a big storm. Conditions weren't optimal for photography with 30mph sustained winds and icy snow. I was there more for the experience than the photography, but I couldn't resist taking some pictures. Watching the waves exploding off of the walls along the edge of the lake was really something else. You don't want to be in wrong place at the wrong time with those waves. Fortunately I only got moderately wet.

The final build in a four-part collaboration between Halhi and I for the 2020 Summer Joust's collaboration category.
This build was a ton of work, involving some extensive re-building at several points, but I'm really happy with how it's turned out. Unlike with most builds, I fully "sketched out" this build with basic bricks and then went replacing each portion with a more detailed version. The most complex part is the wooden "X" section on the right house, which required tweezers to work on.
For the lighting, the flame and the lantern aren't done with any fancy editing effects, but with actual flashlights shone through black brick walls with small transparent brick windows.
And before I forget, a big thanks to Halhi on this one, since he gave me feedback on no fewer than 23 work in progress shots for this build!
Overall, a lot of thought went into the storytelling and continutity of this collaboration, so see if you can follow the subtle threads from each build to the next!
After spending a couple of hours switching at the town of its namesake, BNSF's Parachute Local gets underway back to Grand Junction near Una siding, CO. Todays train was a real treat, as leading the return trip was GP50 No. 3132 still carrying its Burlington Northern cascade green livery. Paired with the 'Geep' was B40-8 No. 528, which was seen at Denver earlier in the trip. The train also had a pretty long load which is not always the case.

Spending a long weekend up in SW Buckyville, so I figured I’d shoot my shot at crossing a couple railroads off the hit list. After slamming the Iowa River, I shot a couple of IC depots en route to Shell Rock hoping to find something working. I was delighted to find one of their two paired slug sets working the south end of Butler Yard. I hung out for a few hours shooting various angles of that job, before needing to blast off toward Cedar Falls, Dubuque, and points east.
The ducklings spend their time doing five things: eating, napping, preening, swimming and sleeping. This photo was taken August 19 and I think a couple of the broods hatched quite late in the season. There are about a dozen chicks at this young stage, while most others around the pond are almost the size of their mothers.
Of all the chicks, this one youngster seemed quite curious. While her siblings were huddled close together, she would walk a few steps away on her own and do some exploring.
Linda made a comment yesterday about the wet appearance of the ducklings. I don't know much about ducks but I know they have a gland that secretes oil, which waterproofs their down. I think the wet look of this duck is caused by preening, as she spreads the oil onto her outer feathers. I'm sure there are some birders out there that can clarify that.

Mostly out of curiosity, I downloaded the Reddit app and signed up. Much of what's on there makes me cringe or shake my head, but I've been spending time at their Photoshop subreddit. I've been learning some things as I look at what folks have submitted for critique. Composite photo montages are extremely popular there. Something many submitters ask is how to make an element blend better into the scene. Commonalities seem to be not paying attention to light sources, and not knowing much about shadows.
That prompted me to set up some things and shoot photos at various times of day to study contact shadows and cast shadows. This is one of the shots.
Mannequin's right foot is off the ground so there isn't a contact shadow there, but there are at the other foot and where parts of its body contact the ball and where the ball contacts the shelf.
I thought at first this would be a simple set up, but then I noticed that there is light reflected from the shelf upward onto the ball and mannequin, from the ball to the mannequin and from the mannequin to the ball.
New Mexico is a strange place for shadows. We're so high in elevation that in direct sunlight, shadows here don't behave the same as at lower elevations. The edges are more crisp. There isn't the same fall-off of density as the shadow gets farther from that which is casting it.
I had to shoot this photo before the sunlight directly hit the shelf in order to see the gradations of density.
Painters study light and shadows, but rarely do photographers. And if folks are going to be trying for photorealistic montage, they also need to know about light and shadows. As a result of these shadow study photos, back at Reddit I've been recommending that the compositors set up an action figure (all of them are guys in their teens and twenties it seems) and a desk lamp to see the directions that shadows are cast from a source and the gradations of density between contact and cast shadows and within cast shadows.
After spending the whole day building the new family home, I decided to lay down in my new hammock for a nap.

After spending hours up at Delicate Arch in Arches National Park waiting for the milkyway to rise above for some time lapse and photos. It was already 3am in the morning when I headed back down to the parking lot after miles of hiking on the Delicate Arch Trail. But the starry night sky is still nice and bright. Even though I was already pretty tired after the waiting and hiking, I told myself that it was a great opportunity to keep shooting. I drove to another area in the park by the Window Trail Loop to take some more shots. It was already 3am, I walking into the trail and took some more photos. The landscape here is very interesting like you are on another planet. Almost a little creepy when you are alone around 4am.
While spending some time on the 7 mile miracle, I captured this scene. The north shore of O'ahu in the winter is the site of big waves often ideal for surfing. Several surf contests are held including the Billabong Pipermasters in December and the Volkom Pipepro in February. The famous surf breaks along here include the Banzai Pipeline and Waimea Bay. Thanks for the view.
Chester's in the foreground, with Sweet Pea taking up the rear. Tank's siblings, so I'm kinda like their Aunt. =)
I came into their house to let them out lunchtime. Chester came down, but Sweet Pea wouldn't, so up I went to see what was holding her up. Turns out, it was the comfy bed. She just didn't want to get down and go out. So I popped off a few shots and then coaxed them both outside. They are as adorable in real life as they look in this pic. Don't let Chester's expression fool you... he was loving this, because treats always follow!
In fact, that's what he's eyeing right now. =)

I spend a few minutes at each place I visit when on a trip. In this case, I paid for parking (that's my blue convertible rental in the center of the photo). I inquired about going inside, but the price was too high for my budget, and I usually find it's the exterior architecture of a building which interests me the most anyway.
I circled the building, built in 1845, enhanced in 1879, and home to Hawai'i's royal family until 1893, when the monarchy was overthrown. It is the only royal palace on U.S. soil, and served as the state capitol until 1969. I took pictures from all angles, and then outside the gate, and across the street, where I also photographed the courthouse.
I love banyan trees, and there were several large ones planted in a circle on the "back yard" of the present State Capitol building, which I didn't photograph. I did, however, shoot the Palace here from the ground up with the banyan trees framing the building, and thought to process and present this view first. Probably not a view most photographers or tourists would even think of shooting.
ʻIolani Palace features architecture seen nowhere else in the world. This unique style is known as American Florentine.

Spending our summer holiday in the German Mosel area (you can see our tent at the far right in this picture). It was a beautiful quiet summer evening and the river was like a mirror reflecting the landscape. The light was perfect and we found a great spot on top of the bridge for shooting a panorama.
And we did.
But with an extra: ... suddenly 2 speedboats entered our view from underneath us producing a whole lotta noise.
Although it was only for a breath moment, I think the presence of the boats adds a kick to this otherwise maybe dull image.

It's a glorious day today and I've been outside gardening for hours. I'm dead tired and, therefore, posting what I have on hand. Here are some of the treasures I bought at HomeSense last week.
Most of the "silver" things, on the mantel, came home that day.
Three more shots in comments and more to post in future. ;)
Spending hours to catch one light.. worth it!
No huge processing, some noise reduction at ISO4000 but the lightnings do the rest

Years ago we decided to spend a hot summer evening cruising back roads north of Newcastle looking for tarantulas. June is a good time to hunt for these impressive spiders as they wander about seeking females hiding in their burrows. We encountered this fellow while we were driving slowly down a dirt road in True, about 6 miles north of Newcastle. I'm not lucky enough to EVER find $20 just sitting waiting to be picked up. I would NEVER be lucky enough to find one with a Tarantula guarding it... waiting to be photographed. This situation is actually a followup to a failed attempt to capture a tarantula (this one) and bring it in a Tupperware salad bowl back to our cottage in Newcastle for an extended photo session. The lead-in to this pic's situation is here:
www.flickr.com/photos/61377404@N08/50111294752/in/album-7...
After grabbing a single tarantula / Tupperware bowl image and having our would-be captive scoot away into the weeds beside the road, we figured a different approach might net us a few pics.
The $20 bill was carefully planted by myself a few feet away from the tarantula, which had paused in its flight from the salad bowl. I worked the bill into the grass to make it seem like it had been dropped, blown by the wind and carried along until it lodged in the grass. The bill just sitting flat on the ground wouldn't do. We wanted something to show the size of this creature, but the setup had to look natural. With a small twig I carefully "coaxed" our subject onto the bill. My sister wanted no part of this operation. His jinking in the wrong direction a few times was corrected with light leg taps which eventually maneuvered him into the position you see here. When we were finished he was NOT allowed to keep the $20.
