After spending the last 6 days shooting nightscapes with Wayne Pinkston we managed to get to Mono Lake to shoot a few panoramas. We had to find a location far away from the south tufas because being a new moon and on a saturday night the main area was a zoo, kids running around with flashlights photographers stumbling around in every direction. It was kinda like drunk disneyland, Hehe.

If you have any questions about this photo or about photography in general, I will do my best to help, just post a comment or send me a Flickr mail and I will respond as quickly as possible.

A stunning bulky short-necked looking diving duck with a high-peaked head and triangular bill. An active duck but wary which spends most of the time on the water repeatedly diving for food. Flocks of goldeneye's are often made up of females and immatures with adult males joining in the spring. Where as the male has a bold white spot and a green glossed black head and black marks on a white body the female differs by having a dark brown head with a white collar and a grey body.

Spending a little time for a rose.

Used some Topaz filter and a texture from Melissa Gallo!!

♫♬♪♩Roxette - Spending My Time♫♬♪♩

After spending a few hours on Mormon Row to catch sunrise, I drove a bit farther back along Antelope Flats Road and hiked out onto the prairie to capture this image of a bison leading his gang (that's really what they're called) across the flat, and away from the areas where tourists usually inhabit during the day.

The gang was moving pretty fast, not stopping much to forage, so I wasn't able to make an image of them directly in front of the iconic Cathedral Group. After seeing this movement, I walked back to my Jeep and noticed two isolated bison across the road. In probably my riskiest move of the entire trip, I hiked to within about 75 yards of those two, but was unable to catch a clean image, as they kept in pretty tall brush, and repeatedly laid down. There was no iconic background from my vantage, as the mountains were at my back. Figuring I had a pretty good day, I decided not to press my luck further and returned to the Jeep in search of more landscape images.

Spending time in the Gods' Garden.

Spending a vacation week with the "kids" and grandkids, my schedule shifted and I found myself up before sunrise every morning. The skies and clouds at Lanikai Beach were often so dramatic with the sunrise, sunset, rain and rainbows.

After spending hour at dam for nice sunset, the things did not work out, so finally left, as i was driving away, my eyes caught the glimpse of bright blue light in sky, so pulled over and took this shot. I think the wait and persistence paid off!

...You used to spend the night in smoke, not in the clouds

But you keep your eyes open at night

And you’ll shut down all the curtains when the sun shines

Keep your distance from this light...

Skippy has Lunch this little squirrel spends his time eating bird seed and peanuts everyday.

You spend your nights alone

And he never comes home

And every time you call him

All you get's a busy tone

I heard you found out

That he's doing to you

What you did to me

Ain't that the way it goes

When you cheated girl

My heart bleeded girl

So it goes without saying that you left me feeling hurt

Just a classic case

A scenario

Tale as old as time

Girl you got what you deserved

And now you want somebody

To cure the lonely nights

You wish you had somebody

That could come and make it right

But girl I ain't somebody with a lot of sympathy

You'll see

Yeah, ayy

I don't want this night to end

It's closing time, so leave with me again (yeah)

You got all my love to spend, oh

Let's find a place where happiness begins

We gon' dance in my living room, slave to the way you move

Hurts when I'm leaving you (ayy)

Just dance in the living room, love with an attitude

Drunk to an 80s groove (ayy)

We gon' dance in my living room, slave to the way you move

Hurts when I'm leaving you (ayy)

Dance in the living room, love with an attitude

Drunk

It's only human, you know that it's real

So why would you fight or try to deny the way that you feel?

Oh, babe, you can't fool me, your body's got other plans

So stop pretending you're shy, just come on and

Dance, dance, dance, dance, oh

Early morning la-la-light

Only getting up to close the blinds, oh

I'm praying you don't change your mind

Cause leaving now just don't feel right

Let's do it one more time, oh, babe . . .

Sea otters spend the majority of their day taking it easy, resting by floating on their backs. Groups or "rafts" of sea otters congregate in calm, quiet waters. The highest number of sea otters recorded in such a raft totaled over two thousand animals - that would have been quite a sight to see!

This one would float peacefully, stretch a bit and preen, then resume the "position." Sounds like a great way to spend a lazy, Friday afternoon!

Have a blessed weekend! Thank you so much for your views and comments! They are greatly appreciated!

I have to ask my Flickr Friends what sense does it make in spending this vast amount of money on politics when we need it for life globally and here in the USA whether it be food, drink, health, climate change and war amongst other things? Are all the dollars really worth it? Can democracy really be bought? How much difference do the dollars actually make?

Still spending most of my shooting time focused on Barred Owls, and most of my weekend was spent observing this individual who I found on Friday. It seems to spend most of the time hunting a small field, and is more tolerable to humans than most of the other birds I've encountered recently. Watching it hunt on Saturday during the snow was a dream experience for me, and was very lucky to capture this one sharp frame in this sequence.

I've passed the site of this shack along California's Hwy 395 several times, but the light and fresh snow on the mountains finally convinced me to spend some time there with the camera.

After spending time investigating Roberts Creek, I drove along the coastal road and found the Roberts Creek Provincial Park. This entire area attracts a good deal of tourism in the summer so this time of year finds those same places somewhat empty of people. Except for one other person, this place was mine to play in.

After many angles, and numerous shots, this is the image that was in my mind. The sweeping stone stairs on a hill had drawn my attention, with the carpet of Autumn leaves laying undisturbed. Their vivid colors were in stark contrast to the grey stairs, while the fence and green foliage would support them in the background. I wanted to exaggerate the stairs and how they swept across the view so getting close with a wide angle lens was necessary. It was a fun afternoon with the time needed to find what lay behind the camera.

Gardena German retractable water hose reel makes life much neater,

I bought one 4 years ago for the back garden, I was so impressed I purchased another last year, if you have one I have a suggestion, as the hose retracts wrap a cloth around the hose that will clean all the debris instead going in the real.

No more straggling to untangle hoses, it is worth the money I spend.

Have a great weekend,

Wow! Imagine that the temperature outside your house was almost 50 degrees hotter than it usually is. After three days of having the temperature inside our house registering 95 to 100 degrees, I have now found myself breathing easier. This morning I spent time reacquainting myself with some of my favorite plant friends. These moments are some of the blessings in life. Deep thoughts for a quiet afternoon of reflection. :)

I was able to spend a few hours in morning light with the local Long-billed Curlew. We sure are blessed in Metro Vancouver to have this normally rare resident. Long-billed Curlews are threatened in Canada. There are 2 Subspecies of Long-billed Curlew and the subspecies that occurs in the USA (Numenius americanus americanus) is bigger than the ones we get and have longer bills than the Canadian (Numenius americanus) ones. There are only 500 Long-billed Curlews left in BC and with continued development and agricultural land use their breeding habitat gets further reduce we must do all we can to conserve and protect our remaining grasslands in Canada but especially in BC.

04-May-2022: about turism: my perplexities towards a future with more and more bans and more and more over-taxes.

Lake Bohinj and the much more famous Lake Bled are close (less than 20 km) but the second has a mass tourism now rooted, while the first is expanding its tourist reception in recent years, coming out (unfortunately) from the shadow of Bled, that was a lightning rod for peaceful and symbiotic nature lovers.

I am totally against mass tourism because it transforms a relaxing resort into an area where it is difficult even to access it.

Around Lake Bled, even at a certain distance, there are only paid parking lots, which come to cost 6 euros per hour (about the most decentralized and in May...) that, certainly, leave perplexed about the "tourist selection" that "they" would like to implement (high-end tourism) and, in general, certainly drive away the tourist in search of nature and not restaurants, bars, concrete lake-front and crowd baths.

The naturalist tourist should not feel like a tourist in Nature, which is a single great asset of humanity and that only administratively is divided between various Countries, while in Bled, as in Rimini or Cortina d'Ampezzo, they make you feel not only tourist, but also guest, sometimes unwanted if you spend little.

As tourism increases, so do the bans, because unfortunately mass tourism includes many people who don't know anything about Nature and generally only go to very touristy places to make themselves of...people, sowing dirt and ignorance wherever they move.

The imposition of prohibitions/bans to limit the "damage from mass tourism" affects everyone indiscriminately, including locals and naturalists who have always had a symbiotic relationship with these places, thus making them become inhospitable, at least to those seeking pure contact with nature itself.

Of course this happens all over the world, but it should be condemned.

We already pay State taxes for the maintenance of the slice of Nature that falls within our administration, tourist surcharges, exploiting market laws that should be verified and contained, are for the most part unconstitutional, as well as several prohibitions that deprive access and use of public property.

With the money that the tourist municipalities pocket they could very well implement a targeted prevention (controls by foresters, cameras, ad hoc fences for areas subject to micro-pollution...) rather than closing everything and then de-empowering themself on the maintenance of roads and areas (more and more numerous), thus going to save further, starting from the basic taxes that we pay to also have access to given areas.

I can understand that you tax parking at high altitude to maintain the roads, but the amount of the payment should be directly proportional to the expenses that must be incurred to ensure accessibility, not by putting prices at random and with increases of 200% from one year to the next.

I have always appreciated the fact that Slovenia, thanks also that it is not densely inhabited and has a modest tourism (except precisely Bled, Postojna Caves and the Coast), guarantees a wide accessibility and use of its territories and I hope it can continue, limiting the prohibitions and parking lots everywhere.

After spending some time doing long exposures on our one and only morning at the Grundlsee it was already pretty bright and I thought about going back to our room, but luckily I did not. I still walked around and took a few snapshots and as I packed my gear the sun all of a sudden peaked above the mountains. I quickly took my camera out of my bag and decided to take some images without the tripod since setting up the tripod would have taken too long. In hindsight, it would have been nice to take a panorama, but since I didn't expect this to happen I just had a single image which I cropped to 2:1. Anyway, I really like the colors, the sunstar and the cute little duck :) Hope you like it too!

Linus spends a lot of time outdoors and hides somewhere under the plants. His camouflage isn't as good as Fynn's or Sethi's but sometimes it's still not easy to find him. Today I had a vet appointment for Fynn and wanted to take Linus with me because he has some ugly fur mats which I wanted the vet to remove (Linus hates any contact with a brush or comb). It didn't work out as planned, though, because Linus was nowhere to be found, Fynn and I left the house alone. When we returned home, Linus sat on the terrace, all innocent but slightly too pleased with himself for my taste.

Sorry for not being very present on Flick at the moment. I have a pinched nerve in my neck and can hardly move. It won't be possible for me to catch up with all of your photos because the pinched nerve causes a terrible headache and I can't look at a computer screen for long.

I was privileged to spend a number of hours over the extended New Years holiday visiting SoCal’s latest celebrity, a Snowy Owl. She has been hanging out by day on the rooftops of homes in an Orange County neighborhood before she heads out late afternoon for her evening hunt. You may have heard of her by now as she has made all the local news, national news, and even CNN’s commentator Jeanne Moos did a fascinating piece on her. She’s about 1500 miles/2400 kilometres out of the southern boundary of her range. How she got here can only be guessed – came on a ship (Los Angeles Harbor isn’t that far away), blew in, followed the Snow Geese south and kept going – who knows.

She’s a big raptor, heavier than a Great Horned Owl by a pound. The first morning I spotted her I was a block away and could pick her out easily on the rooftop (the crowd of onlookers helped). This is an image from that magical morning, a bit drizzly, in fact you can see some water around her left eye and her feathers are a bit soppy. I gotta admit, my first look in camera of my first images pretty much overtook me with her beauty. Do enjoy!

Spend an hour in peace here and the world will seem a better place.
