After spending the whole morning at Haukland Beach, we were freezing, so we headed back to our rorbu to warm up and have a quick lunch (including the famous Kvikk Lunsj). For sunset, we decided to explore Uttakleiv Beach, which is home to the famous Dragon's Eye, a small spherical boulder lying in a water-filled depression, but due to its popularity, I didn't expect us to be the only ones. When we arrived at the parking lot, we could see the Dragon's Eye from afar because two photographers had set up their cameras there waiting for the light. All the other photographers had moved on to other compositions, probably because the Dragon's Eye only allows one or two tripods right next to it. Nevertheless, we went down, hoping these photographers would leave soon, but before they packed up, another group of photographers showed up and claimed the spot for themselves.

In fact, I didn’t even took a smartphone image of it, since I also noticed that the snow on the dark rocks right next to it was full of footprints, and as this is a wide-angle composition these would inevitably be visible in the frame. Moreover, I thought that we would definitely return to this spot, but at the time I didn’t realize that this is a low-tide location and the tide would be rising the next days for sunrise and sunset. Instead of waiting I decided to look for other compositions and a few meters to the right of the Dragon’s Eye I spotted not one, but a few round boulders submerged in the frozen water in a depression that was surrounded by dark rocks that were covered by a pristine layer of fresh snow. I was immediately drawn to this composition and after setting up my tripod on the slippery rocks, I took most of the shots without a polarizer, thinking that the reflection would add to the image. Fortunately, I also put on my polarizer for one set of focus stack shots which I much prefer due to the better visibility of the boulders, even though the polarizer didn’t manage to cut all the reflections which I then tried to mitigate in post. So even though I didn’t get a chance to shoot the Dragon’s Eye, I’m very happy with this image of a composition I haven’t seen before. I hope you like it too!

This man spends hours each day, tending to the pigeons of Paris: he hauls a heavy load of bread, brioches (bread with eggs and butter) and water from one place to another where hordes of pigeons gather to feast, drink and bathe. I already spoke to him on one occasion, and this time, I asked him if he recognised the pigeons, or did they move from one place to another. He explained that some were "regulars", and had been around for years...and others were newcomers....He loves pigeons because they're always happy and content when he feeds them, unlike people. "...less disappointing."

NB: this man is not homeless, and was not asking for money...

After spending the day working in the Salt Lake Valley on the Sandy Local, SW10 No. 1260 and GP30 No. 871 drift toward the shops at North Yard in Salt Lake City, Utah the afternoon of August 1, 1987. UP’s fleet of GP30s was depleting rapidly, but 871 would continue to serve on the active roster until retirement in Sept. 1988.

Spending a few terrific hours with friends on a Sunday morning is very fun when you can shoot this together. The NKP 765 leading the first trip of the day eastbound thru Tinley Park, Il on Sept 16, 2018.

We were in the mountains after spending a long day exploring and enjoying nature. We stopped in a small campground clear off to give the kids some time for necessary relief (*ahem - otherwise known as potty break lol) The sun was setting but we were surrounded by dense forest so there wasn't too much light. As I walked through the forest edge waiting on a few stragglers I saw the way the sun was setting through the trees and it was illuminating this tiny patch of tall grass. I knew I had to get it. And the sun was setting rapidly enough I didn't have time to switch out my lens from my 85mm. What I wanted was to get the light coming through the tops of the trees but the scale between the tiny patch of grass and the tall tree tops was pretty dramatically different. The only way I could get it was turning my camera vertical and setting it on the ground. Literally a belly shot! ;) The kids loaded back into the van and I emerged from the forest dirty and smiling. My husband doesn't even ask anymore why I'm dirty, he just smiles and says "Did you get what you wanted?"

Haha!

This particular trip was one of my favorites of the Fall season. Why is it that mid fall the sunlight seems more rich, more vibrant? It's a different sunset than a summer one. Maybe it's the autumnal colors that it's shining through... I don't know, sometimes I don't care what the explanation is. I love believing it's just another magical touch of the Autumn season. :)

On another note can you believe it's November already? At last it's beginning to feel as if Autumn is really truly about to be gone...:( We had a lot of snow hit us on the 31st. It really looked like a Winter Wonderland! Currently stocking up on firewood and making plans to celebrate with most of my family for Thanksgiving. And trying to slow time down and take every day as the treasure it is regardless of seasons...

Oh, oh I almost forgot! For a Winter project I've been working on my graphic design degree online. This has taken me into a lot of fun and interesting direction. As I had many of my photographer friends asking for logos and watermarks I decided to make some up. The majority of people buying them are portrait and wedding photographers. I would love input on what would make a good design for more landscapes? More of a watermark and not a logo I guess? I'd love to expand and I would love your feedback on the link below.

Alright, my coffee is cold and other responsibilities are calling. Coming here is like talking to old friends, it's hard to stop. Thank you for always listening to me! <3

xx,

Rachel

After spending the day in and around Norfolk, Virginia between Lamberts Point and Portlock Yard, I decided to head over to Shell Rd near Bridge 7 to see if I could get a few trains going by. Instead, when I got there, a crew was getting ready to drop off a new turnout for a small spur just to the west of the bridge. NS 6110 does the honors and was built as N&W 6110 in 1975. After a nice conversation with the conductor and they dropped the switch off, I continued on my way.

After spending the afternoon painting the front porch I sat down to enjoy the evening. A faint rumble of thunder in the distance hinted at an evening storm. A faun meandered into the yard, nibbling on our flowers. I watched as it found a suitable spot to rest and wait for mom. My camera is always near. I grabbed it and found a spot to sit in the grass not far away. It was the best hour of the entire weekend.

Joey actually spends most of his time indoors rather than outside the house.

I used to put a bell on him all the time years ago as he would frequently jump into our neighbor's yard and he would sometimes wander in the dirty culverts in the neighborhood.

Although he doesn't mind wearing a bell, I think he values his privacy away from both Sunny and Cherie. The bell alerts his presence to both cats and Cherie likes to follow Joey around the house.

Unlike 6 years ago, Joey no longer ventures outside our compound and doesn't even bother to sneak into our neighbor's yard. He'd spend about 10-15 minutes outside and makes his way back indoors.

In retrospect, I wish I had trained him to be an indoor cat rather than let he do what he pleased. All the troubles that led him to the vet's for treatment were in fact, caused by his outdoor escapades.

Since last year I've disallowed him from jumping down to the roof below my bedroom, for fear of his inability to jump back up the window.

Joey had been diagnosed with arthritis last year, further compounding his chronic kidney disease condition.

Sometimes I wonder if Joey misses his late companions, Adam and Tommy. He does get along well with Cherie the tortie, but is very wary of the physically bigger Sunny.

Joey turned 14 years old sometime in October 2024 and I adopted him exactly fourteen years ago on January 29th, 2011.

After spending the night of April 26 at Fruita Campground, Capitol Reef National Park, Utah, Steve and I got an early start that gave us plenty of time to make many stops along the scenic Notom-Bulfrog Road. We took many photos, made a number of short hikes to enjoy the views from higher vantage points, and spent some time looking at the wildflowers. We turned off the Notom-Bullfrog Road and drove the Burr Trail and beyond. More about that with photos as time allows.

Thank you for the views, awards, comments, and faves. Have a great week.

Spending a quiet Memorial Day weekend up at the lake house.

Lisa's birthday is on 18th August. This photo is specially for her. She is a wonderful friend and a very passionate woman who creates MAGIC combining photography with poetry.

Here is a poem for you Lisa :-

Happy Birthday Special Treasure

God gave a gift to the world when you were born—

a person who loves, who cares,

who sees a person’s need and fills it,

who encourages and lifts people up,

who spends energy on others

rather than herself,

someone who touches each life she enters,

and makes a difference in the world,

because ripples of kindness flow outward

as each person you have touched, touches others.

Your birthday deserves to be a national holiday,

because you are a special treasure

for all that you’ve done.

May the love you have shown to others

return to you, multiplied.

I wish you the happiest of birthdays,

and many, many more,

so that others have time to appreciate you

as much as I do.

As its name suggests, the red-eyed tree frog has red eyes with vertically narrowed pupils. It has a vibrant green body with yellow and blue, vertically striped sides. Its webbed feet and toes are orange or red. The skin on the red-eyed tree frog's belly is soft and fragile, whereas the back is thicker and rougher. Red-eyed tree frogs have sticky pads on their toes. They spend a majority of their lives in trees; they are excellent jumpers. Red-eyed tree frogs are not poisonous and rely on camouflage to protect themselves. During the day, they remain motionless, cover their blue sides with their back legs, tuck their bright feet under their bellies, and shut their red eyes. Thus, they appear almost completely green, and well hidden among the foliage.

Spending Thanksgiving soaking up the last rays of summer.

So after spending a day in the Hofn area it was time to start heading back west to Reykjavik. It was cold and cloudy but we decided to check out the waterfall we could see in the distance and where that road went (see previous post). The cloudy weather was good for shooting waterfalls, and maybe with the cold less people. We bumped along in first gear all the way to a small parking area and started up the narrow trail. There was a lot of lumber all along the trail, so it looks like they're trying to improve the trial and areas were roped off(although some people just ignored the ropes and walked right through the sensitive ground cover) This was our first view of Hangandifoss and I liked how it was framed in the V of the canyon walls.

Normally on a Monday morning I do swim squad. But with the pools closed, I went for an early morning with my wife - who was happy to be my model at the end of the run when I noticed a puddle. Even with the world gone mad, it’s important to find the positives.

To my flickr mates, I’m doing my best to keep up - but spending all day on a variety of devices in my home office makes getting on to devices in the evening that little bit harder. I’ll get there.

Spending a summer here with your friends? No cars, no crowds, no need to rush (and no corona btw)...

Spend Saturday on a non-competitive chartiy ride. TSV Kochertürn (www.tsv-kochertuern.de) hosts its annual Kastanienfest (chestnut festival) and organizes a charity bike ride. Starting fees go to DKMS (www.dkms.de) a charity that organizes bone marrow for leukemia patients.

The group ride was super-fun. Saturday is a team event, Sunday a single event. Only thing that didn't go entirely right was I had no competitive riders on my team. And those two guy who in the end proved the best for fast riding were not really interested in being cooperative in sharing the work load. But anyway. Fun plus a good cause make for an excellent day, right? And so it was.

Agnes spends a ton of time on the bench seat by the kitchen window. There's a park behind out house so it's a perfect place to watch the world go by from.

I was going to do a different shot, but the light did not cooperate. I don't usually shoot in full sun, but decided to give it a try as it makes her eyes light up so nicely.

I also recently picked up a new camera (Nikon Z6ii) mainly for sports photography with the kids.

I am loving it for more than that as the focus is sharper and it handles contrasty light better.

I spend Christmas in Saariselka in Finland to do 4 days in Lapland for the children. We had superb showings of the northern lights on Christmas Eve and also on Christmas Day.

I spend too much time at road level so thought I'd do some climbing for a change. The weather was very changeable this morning but in between the showers there were fleeting periods when the Sun showed its face.

I just wish I'd gone up there better prepared. I was wrapped up well for the cold but not prepared (literallly) for the rain and sleet. It was VERY windy and the sleet doesn't half sting your face hitting you at 100mph (maybe a little exaggeration there).

Enjoying the Weather POO cat sitting on the deck rail observing his surroundings, he loves outdoors and spends as much time there as he can. It makes him happy, he patrols the grounds of about 4 houses and the woods next to me, he does what he wants and my nearby neighbors treat him like there own, a spoiled rotten wannabe Ferrel cat!

Spending a week in Switzerland for work purposes, I had a bit of spare time to head to the lovely quaint town of Weggis. With there being no rail to Weggis, I hopped on the bus and was on my way. Arrived at the bus stop at around 8pm, which was in walking distance to this jetty. WIth it being extremely warm, there were loads of people swimming and relaxing in the jetty, so had to be a little patient waiting for one to become available. This didn't take too long and I managed to get a few long exposures shots in before the sun completely set.

Afterwards, I headed back to the bus stop and thought I'd be back at the hotel at 10pm. However, I didn't take into account two of the scheduled buses not arriving. Luckily, the last bus for the evening did arrive and I eventually got back to the hotel after midnight. Certainly not the efficient Swiss transport system I was expecting. Luckily though the bar was still open at the hotel as a beer was definitely in order.

would you spend some time to my blue ? Please press L to read it !!

to me blue is fascinating imagination...

Surveys in the US and Europe show that blue is the colour most commonly associated with harmony, faithfulness, confidence, distance, infinity, the imagination, cold, and sometimes with sadness. In US and European public opinion polls it is the most popular colour, chosen by almost half of both men and women as their favourite colour. (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue)

Spend time together, fly together, land together, ain't love grand

After spending two days in Mt Adams area on the way home I decided to visit ,as I read, the most photographed falls, Spirit Falls. I read that the hike there is short but not so easy. But I even couldn't imagine how hard it would be on me. Bushwhacking and scrambling down a very steep slope was a good morning exercise. Actually there is a visible path to the falls. I didn't find the place, from where photographers usually take pictures. There were two young people there, they started earlier. We met on the spot I took pictures from. I must say the falls is spectacular. I was amazed by the color of the water. I can imagine how beautiful it is in spring and summer time. Anyway, I am happy I made it. I am not sure I will ever go there again. But I can change my mind.
