After spending the night in Alexandria enjoying dinner and drinks with a good friend we headed out Friday morning only 15 min from his home for a wildly productive morning of photographing 12 different trains in the span of only three hours (plus a couple we didn't bother with because it was raining so hard when we first showed up).
With the world renowned Sakura (cherry blossoms) at peak there was only one place to go to photograph some trains. Few places in the district are more iconic for rail photography than the short bridge over the Washington Channel flowing from the Tidal Basin as seen from East Potomac Park.
This was the second of nine trains I shot at this spot before we moved to two other locations for trains 10 thru 12. I'm not actually sure what this is as there were no more Virginia Railway Express inbound trains scheduled at this time so perhaps it's a returning protect set or some other deadhead going back toward Union Station or Ivy City Yard. VRE V50 (MPI MP36PH-3C blt. Jun. 2010) shoving on the south end is at about MP CFP 111.3 on modern day CSXT's RF&P Subdivision. These rails leading to the Long Bridge over the Potomac River (out of sight to the left) are ex Pennsylvania Railroad and a few catenary poles remain as seen in this shot from the days when long freights behind electric motors headed for classification at the mighty and long gone Potomac Yard.
The roof of the Bureau of Engraving and Printing is visible at right center behind the spring trees and the 555 ft tall Washington Monument rises beyond

After spending the night 90 kilometres north in Lebel-sur-Quévillon, coming back empty handed -- I decided to make a quick stop in Senneterre trying to catch the arrival of 574 from Parent, I sadly was 15-20 minutes too late.
However, I caught 5330 actually working, being used on the 0700 yard job. Catching a glimpse of sun, the yard crew is seen shoving a handful of cars in track AS04. The engine is smoking quite badly due to the injector that blew two nights earlier, but it still gets the job done.
I would've loved to shoot it getting rare mileage on the Matagami subdivision instead of tucked away amongst the wires of the Senneterre yard but hey, it's better than nothing!

After spending the day prior to the east of Štrba we spent the following day to the west. Amongst the locations was one classic shot that is famous all over Europe and it was certainly one I couldn't miss, especially with the lovely backdrop of the High Tatras.
After seeing the 363 and a 350 we were in good spirits and what better than a ZSSK Cargo 131 in the beautiful green and yellow livery to add to the collection at this spot. Here 131 046 and 131 045 head westbound with a ZSSK hopper rake. This rake was even better in my opinion than a gondola set and made a nice change.

I spend a good deal of time now standing still and just observing, I was watching a fox in the grass on the hillside hoping it would come out in the open. Suddenly this Eastern Bluebird flew onto a branch right in front of me. He seemed unconcerned that I was a few feet away and looked for insects on the ground. One of those "moments" :)
After spending a very pleasant morning with Andy, I was walking back along Cross Street in Manchester to catch the tram home; from St. Peter’s Square, where else would it be? Heading in that direction I was walking directly into the sun when I spotted the rim lighting on these silhouetted pedestrians. I quite liked the effect it had on their hair, hats etc., so I took a picture; and nearly got run down by the cyclist…..!
Birds spend considerable time preening, or grooming their feathers. It's often done while sunning, dusting, or bathing. It's a bird's way of maintaining the health of their feathers. It keeps them aligned for optimal flight, removes damaged feathers, and removes parasites. They also spread a waxy oily substance from a gland at the base of their tale. This keeps the feathers waterproof and flexible. It's no wonder then that birds carry out this task quite often.

Happy Fence Friday, Everyone!
After spending time on Little Round Top the prior day, I couldn't sleep well. So, I got up and went out for a walk. Here is a view of the former town square of Gettysburg, now a roundabout. A statue of Lincoln commemorates his stay at the David Wills' house, towards which his hat is pointed, where he polished up his famous Gettysburg Address. It is now a National Park site. In the background is the Gettysburg Hotel, a former county courthouse. This is such an important piece of our American heritage.

Spend a good few hours walking around our local patch looking for signs of life now the sun is warming us up. I stood for a few hours trying to capture the Bumbles on the newly flowering Blacktorns.

Spend some time in the quiet of a forest. It’s good for the sole. However, this particular trip ended up being good for the legs as well, as I was chased out of it in the end by a momma moose :)
After spending some time grazing on the sedge grasses that are exposed at low time in the estuary, the mother grizzly and yearling cub land safely back onshore near their den at high tide, Khutzeymateen estuary, BC. The mother bear is still on alert for the danger to her cub posed by a male grizzly in the area.

Lombok Trip Episode 09 - Spending Time Together
Some of my friends asked me to upload a photo of my wife and me when when we're in Lombok. So here it is, I didn't get the better picture of ourself than this :)
Have a great weekend my friend, see you next Friday :)
Spend all your time waiting
For that second chance
For a break that would make it okay
There's always some reason
To feel not good enough
And it's hard, at the end of the day
I need some distraction
Oh, beautiful release
Memories seep from my veins
And maybe empty
Oh, and weightless, and maybe
I'll find some peace tonight
In the arms of the angel
Fly away from here
From this dark, cold hotel room
And the endlessness that you fear
You are pulled from the wreckage
Of your silent reverie
You're in the arms of the angel
May you find some comfort here
So tired of the straight line
And everywhere you turn
There's vultures and thieves at your back
The storm keeps on twisting
Keep on building the lies
That you make up for all that you lack
It don't make no difference
Escape one last time
It's easier to believe in this sweet madness
Oh, this glorious sadness
That brings me to my knees
In the arms of the angel
Fly away from here
From this dark, cold hotel room
And the endlessness that you fear
You are pulled from the wreckage
Of your silent reverie
You're in the arms of the angel
May you find some comfort here
You're in the arms of the angel
May you find some comfort here

How to spend a Monday morning after a long weekend ...
These are the moments when I want to be a cat.
After spending the day at the Knoxville Zoo, far from home, it was nice to get back into my old stomping ground, and bring my friend back to experience nature in a different way. This of course is one of the elk I have been documenting for the past few years with my photography, strong, proud, antlers not symmetrical, and in this case, covered in mud. I managed to miss the large animal thrashing in the mud puddle, though the ranger I stopped to talk to gave me a full account. Of course this individual was apparently giddy for the rut a bit early, and was making a bit of a scene, despite that, I gathered my wits about me, and began capturing fresh images.

After spending the morning and noon at Carmel, it was time to set off for Big Sur, and the iconic landmark, Bixby Bridge.
Spending much more time at home these days, I've been practicing a little more macro as I am sure many are. With a recent cold snap last week, there was some ice on one of our windows which I thought captured some close-ups of.
Thanks for viewing and hope everyone has a safe, healthy and happy Easter!!
Spending time on the phone ... I also had my camera and took virtually the same photo with it and posted it earlier. I'm not sure which one is better. :)

Spending nights out during the midnight sun period in Northern Norway is a highlight for me each summer. Found this waterfall illuminated by the golden light and decided to go for an intimate photo as I found the golden flow quite beautiful!

...A TIME FOR LOVE - Jamie Cullum
A time for summer skies
For hummingbirds and butterflies
For tender words that harmonize with love
A time for climbing hills
For leaning out of windowsills
Admiring daffodils above ADMIRING THE DAFFODILS ABOVE
A time for holding hands together
A time for rainbow coloured weather
A time of make believe that we've been dreaming of
As time goes drifting by
The willow bends and so do I
But all my friends whatever skies above BUT OH, MY FRIENDS, WHATEVER SKY ABOVE
I know a time for spring I'VE KNOWN A TIME FOR SPRING
A time for fall
But best of all
A time for love
A time for holding hands together
A time for rainbow coloured weather
A time of make believe that we've been dreaming of
As time goes drifting by
The willow bends and so do I
But all my friends whatever skies above
I know a time for spring
A time for fall
But best of all
A time for love

Today I spend some quality time with Flatty, my most treasured Kookaburra. There are very few days when she does not come to visit, but today was different. Kookaburras have a special call that signified danger. Today Flatty came to the backdoor and gave the danger call. She repeated it a few times, and so I went to her.
For about ten minutes Flatty stayed, and I stood with her, she was safe from any danger while ever she was with me. Standing about 30 cm, or a foot, from her I videoed about 5 minutes of our time together. I hoped she would repeat the alarm call, but she knew she was safe with me.
When she flies away you will hear the call of another bird, this call is the "all clear" to say the danger had passed. This video is just a few clips from our time together, nothing dramatic, but precious to me, and something I'm happy to share. To me, it is a huge privilege to have such a trusting relationship with a wild bird.

We are lucky, every year, to have a somewhat “special” bird who decides to spend the winter in our yard. This year it’s this little treasure. Lost a Peanut Skippy spends time scratching around this tree, it looks like he is looking for something, or just entertaining himself, shot in North Carolina.
A view looking to the west-southwest across the canyon and gorge with blue skies above while walking the Chasm View Nature Trail in Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. With this image, I zoomed in on the focal length. My feeling was to bring in closer those canyon walls I was looking at that morning. I later worked with control points in DxO PhotoLab 4 and then made some adjustments to bring out the contrast, saturation and brightness I wanted for the final image.
