Snow-capped mountain neinei (Dracophyllum traversii) trees gather on the side of the Mt Arthur track like a group of ghostly spectators.
Seen on the popular walking track up Mt Arthur, the main peak of the Kahurangi Range near Nelson at the top of New Zealand's spectacular South Island.

- www.kevin-palmer.com - This strange looking sight is called a brocken spectre. The colorful rings around my shadow are known as a glory, and they can be seen at the antisolar point (directly opposite the sun) when looking down into mist or clouds. The brocken spectre is commonly seen from the top of a mountain and is named after a peak in Germany that's usually shrouded with clouds. The effect is caused by light that is scattered backwards by individual water droplets. But in this case the 'fog' is actually sulphur dioxide. The stinky gas was bubbling up from the Sulphur Cauldron at Yellowstone National Park.

Silk Spectre from The Watchmen made an appearance at Wonder Con and was kind enough to pose for me.
Cosplay by Crystal Faraday;
Born of the late Roaring Twenties, this luxe touring coupe wore the nameplate “Spectre” in reference to its shadowed face, save for two gleaming gold headlamp “eyes.” A luxury vehicle in every sense, it possessed power and poshness in equal measure.

Among mountain climbers there is a superstition that a person who sees his own brocken spectre will die in the mountains one day.

This is a Brocken Spectre, photographed from the ridge of the Eastern Macgillycuddy Reeks in County Kerry on 25th February, 2023.
It is a rare phenomenon - this is only the second time I've seen one in the mountains; the first was on The Paps mountains back in the 1980s. Most hillwalkers/mountaineers have never seen one.
It is the magnified shadow of an observer (me) cast upon a cloud or fog bank (as here) when the sun is behind the observer. It creates a wonderful circular rainbow around the observer.
It is named after Brocken, a peak in the Harz mountains of Germany and was described as a Brocken Spectre by one Johann Silberschlag in 1780.
This one lasted only seconds as the fog bank was dissipating swiftly. It was a magical experience to see it.
A shot of a section of decaying tree trunk messed about with in Silver Efex Pro. It looks a bit ghost-like to me.
This was my first attempt at building a fighter with a fixed swept-foward wing design. I later used the same technique with my Razorhawk. I think of this design as a cross between a modern jet fighter and a starfighter.
