The saying goes something like “If you are too busy to go fishing, you are too busy.” Copy that for photography. It’s been a long time since I’ve been able to get out and shoot, but wanted to prove I’m not dead or disappeared, so went into the archives and picked an image to share. Black and white images do not seem to be as popular as color images on Flickr, but I'm still pretty fond of them, especially when it involves the somewhat surreal quality provided by an infrared capture.
From time to time I will set out with the D70s I had converted to infrared and see what I can find. It is something of a challenge to shoot with black and white in mind, because you have to visualize the scene knowing what it will look like after the conversion while actually seeing it in color. When shooting infrared, there is the additional shift in how to visualize the scene, since grass, leaves and other green foliage will reflect more infrared light, making them lighter or even white. I love the effect, and overcast days without direct sunshine make it possible to make a capture without the foliage being blown out. Infrared also does a good job of capturing the drama in the sky when there is some.
This looks like it is a winter scene, but really is was shot on the fourth of July. This shot is along a tracks not too far from our home, but it looks like it might be going somewhere special.
