this illustration is from the april 21, 1961 issue of Life magazine. the issue mostly deals with yuri gagarin's successful mission to space and what it meant for america. to pick up everyone's spirits, life ran a bunch of illustrations to show what our spacecraft might look like if we ever got around to building any.

the caption (not visible) reads:

An Aerospace Cop to Help Police The Beat

"As vehicles of all kinds are spewed into space, the problem of policing the traffic will arise. Some of the objects will be harmless derelicts whose only crime is that they are blocking the road. Others, like thecluster of casings show drifting past earth (upper right) may turn out to be military platforms orbited by an enemy to release bombs on command. The U.S. must be prepared to look them all over from maneuverable interceptors, like this one, equipped with sensing devices to detect dangerous weapons and armed with rockets to destroy the offenders."

sounds exciting. it's interesting that nearly 50 years later, there is plenty of space debris, but we still don't even have more than two spacecraft in orbit at any one time, including the space station.

the other interesting thing to me is that in the context of the events of the day, there certainly seems to be a veiled threat against the soviets here, like "you might've gotten there first, but we are going to militarize space with these cool interceptors...so don't get any big ideas."

i scanned this image to add it to the new "In the Year 2000" group. life magazine was still large format back then, so the picture is larger than my scanner. sorry.

The new fountain with acrylic pylons in the center in front of Spaceship Earth at Walt Disney World's Epcot near Orlando, Florida. The new feature contains new lighting which tie in with the changes coming to Epcot. Due to the current COVID-19 restrictions the parks can only go to 35% capacity and are empty compared to normal crowds.

Top of the Hyatt Atlanta. I guess this used to be a revolving restaurant, but isn't now.

This building is really looking like a spaceship but It is not, it's the Pavillon 21 at the Staatsoper Munich

Seen this in London. No aliens though ;)

The architectural detail on the ball is quite impressive.

Spaceship Earth, a geodesic sphere, is Epcot's most recognizable attraction. 3 Exposures merged to HDR in Photoshop then tone mapped in Photomatix Pro.

"The pharaoh dictates decrees which are copied onto scrolls by his scribe. The scribe (not pictured here) uses a simplified cursive form of hieroglyphics — a sort of ancient shorthand if you will. The hieroglyphics on the surrounding walls are authentic recreations from actual Egyptian structures".

Standard 9F 2-10-0 Spaceship 92214 backs down onto its train at Kidderminster on the Severn Valley Railway

Shot with an iPhone7 - the video I took of 92214 departing is really impressive quality considering the size of the lens, and the fact it was handheld

Yeppers, another Walt Disney Dark Ride Shot ;-)

I must confess to you, I have done the 'Photographer Change Of Mind' or as it is better known as..."Artistic Freedom". LOL! I have wavered about my camera decision for our next trip to WDW, I have FULLY settled on my D700 (w/o the extra grip) and my extra sharp TINY Nikon 28-200. I will still be traveling VERY light, but I won't miss any shots!

We went to Dutch Wonderland this past Saturday, and even there I would've missed shots with my P/S. So that made my mind up! ;-)

Enjoy! I will be catching up tomorrow with everyone!

Taken with my Kodak Instamatic 100.

Even when I was a kid, I was fascinated by the design and graphics of these structures at EPCOT Center. The logos were incredible... and the futuristic vibe of the park was amazing. That, along with the pavilions of the nations, made visiting here like being at all of the World's Fairs that I was born too late to experience.

The Art and Science Exhibition Part III consists of a scientific educational part showing some of the most beautiful satellite

images of the Earth, curated by ESA, along with some interactive terminals providing the scientific background information. Several examples of artistic works with satellite imaging and historical references to the field comprise the second part of this exhibition.

This satellite image is also part of the Spaceship Earth Exhibition (2015) at Ars Electronica Center, Linz.

In the first scene of Star Wars, we see a small spaceship pursued by a much larger monolithic star cruiser which keeps coming and coming and coming. When I look up at the enormous buildings in London today and flip the image upside down, they remind me of these star cruisers...
