W121

Produced from 1953 to 1963, a total of 25.881 units were built. As early as 1953, development began on an open version of the 180 Ponton sedan. The 190 SL is therefore technically based on the so-called "Ponton Model". It was available only with a 1,9-litre 4 in-line petrol engine equipped with twin carburetors. It was introduced at roughly the same time as the 300 SL Gullwing. It shared some styling features and was intended to be an affordable version of the exclusive sports car. For this reason, Daimler-Benz described it in its brochures as a "touring car" rather than a sports car. In 1963, it was succeeded by the "Pagoda" (W113).

When the Mercedes-Benz 190SL debuted at the 1954 New York Auto Show, the flashes of glamour shining from the halo 300SL became that little bit more attainable. The 190SL, coded W121, shared its sense of style and several major components with the 300SL supercar, but diverged in two main areas. The 300SL's complex tube-frame chassis was swapped for a more conventional pressed steel monocoque, and the 190SL employed a smaller 1900cc single-cam inline four. The 190SL would always be more of a tourer than a hardcore racer, but priced competitively and offering that hit of post-war serotonin that America was craving, the 190SL was a runaway success. Over 25,000 were built during an eight-year lifespan.

Delivered new in elegant Pearl Grey (colour code DB125) over red leather (code 1079), our vendor purchased this lovely matching numbers example 190SL in 2021 to fulfil a long-held ambition of completing the Mille Miglia, which was done that same year with success. The Datenkart accompanying the car reveals it was delivered new to Los Angeles, USA, and was ordered with a list of options including Perlgrau "Sonderlackierung" - a special and desirable colour.

This190SL remained in the US until 2014, in the long-term ownership of Mr Edwin Kitt. It features the correct Solex twin-barrel carburettors. Presented in lovely condition after a professional restoration that seems to have been carried out a while ago (unfortunately no restoration details or photos are available). The 190SL has been maintained by recognized classic car specialist Phillippe Sybille in Belgium in recent years. Having hardly used the car since the Mille Miglia adventure, the current owner has decided to part with his beautiful 190SL and give the opportunity to its next custodian to participate in "the world's most beautiful race". The documentation includes Belgian registration documents, a current Mille Miglia Registro certificate and of course the Registro badge mounted on the front plate holder, a copy of an old US title, the owner's manual and a copy of the Datenkart confirming the car's original specifications and matching numbers.

The 1989 Geneva Motor Show was marked by the presentation of the brand new version of the SL, dubbed the R129. This generation represented a real technological leap forward compared to the R107, with the introduction of advanced safety systems such as ESP and a retractable hardtop.

This model was delivered to its first owner on June 22, 1998. The color combination chosen is also one of the most elegant, combining “Midnight Blue” (code 904O) with an exclusive bluegray leather interior (code 518A). Today, the car has only 4,650 km on the odometer. Of course, this model is literally in mint condition, both in terms of its bodywork and interior. Both are extremely well preserved, as is its hardtop, which is still in place and in mint condition.

Our test drive showed us that the car was in good working order, despite the very low mileage in recent years. Of course, a general overhaul would be necessary if the next owner wanted to run this car. Like the other SL in this collection, our car is one of those “exceptions that prove the rule”... The vast majority of SLs, especially in the R129 generation, have clocked up tens of thousands of miles thanks to their outstanding road handling qualities. Finding a model with such reasonable mileage is already a challenge in itself, and will become even more so in the coming years. So don’t miss this opportunity to add to your collection the SL from the 1990s, a symbol of a generation, in such exceptional condition. This opportunity may never come again...

In 1957, the 300 SL Gullwing was replaced by the Roadster. Like its predecessor, it was created at the initiative of American importer Max Hoffman. It received an entirely new tubular chassis with lower sills, allowing the installation of conventional doors. The mechanical components remained largely unchanged, but the rear swing axles were replaced by an independent De Dion rear axle, providing smoother suspension and more reliable handling for everyday use. From 1961 onward, the front drum brakes were replaced with disc brakes, and toward the end of production the cast-iron block was replaced by an aluminum one. A stylish hardtop was available as a factory option. Production ended in 1963, with a total of 1.858 roadsters built.

The facelifted 2008 SL model was revealed in the Geneva Motor Show in March. The 2008 SL gets a new front end reflecting Mercedes's new design philosophy, with a pair of long powerdomes on the bonnet and a single-bar grille replacing the old three-bar effort. Also improvements have been made on the engines as the 3.5L V6 is uprated to 311 PS at 6500 rpm. Compared to the previous 3.5-litre engine, the output has been boosted by 16 percent. Torque has also been improved adding 10Nm to the previous 350Nm making it 360Nm. this engine now can rev up to a max of 7200 rpm for a period as the oil temperature and other engine parameters permitting, a higher compression ratio, a new intake manifold and extensively modifying and lightening the valve train. In this case, however, the extra power does not come at the expense of fuel economy: with a consumption figure of 9.9 litres per 100 kilometres, the new SL 350 undercuts the previous model developing 200 kW by 0.4 litres per 100 kilometres.

To celebrate the finale of the 2022 Formula One season, Mercedes-AMG launched the SL 63 "Motorsport Collectors Edition," a roadster that mirrors the design of the AMG Formula One W13 E Performance car. This example, completing production on 3 July 2023, is one of just 100 produced. Its paint finish flows from High-Tech Silver Metallic to Obsidian Black Metallic, accented by a star pattern on the flanks and Petronas-colored details on the front apron, side skirts, diffuser, and the 21-inch AMG forged wheels in Matte Black with Petronas-colored rims.

Powering the SL 63 is a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8, delivering 577 PS at 5,500 rpm and 800 Nm of torque at 2,500 rpm, paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. This enables astonishing straight-line pace: zero to 100 km/h in just 3.0 seconds, a quarter-mile sprint in 11.2 seconds at 200 km/h, and a manufacturer-claimed top speed in excess of 300 km/h.

Performance and style are elevated by the AMG Aerodynamics package, which integrates larger flics, an extended diffuser, and an active underbody profile to improve stability, downforce, and efficiency at speed. For added convenience, the front axle lift system is included with the package. Visual impact is further enhanced by the AMG Night and Night II packages, which add High-Gloss Black and Black-Chrome finishes to exterior details, along with darkened lighting units and black-painted brake calipers.

Inside, the cabin strikes a balance between sport and luxury, featuring AMG Performance seats upholstered in Black Nappa leather and Microcut microfiber with yellow stitching. Carbon-fiber trim and a heated AMG steering wheel with a carbon-fiber rim to reinforce its motorsport character. Standard features include Burmester 3D surround sound, ambient lighting, MBUX with Track Pace, a head-up display, and illuminated AMG door sills.

Once completed, the SL was sent to AutoTorino S.p.A., the official Mercedes-Benz dealer in Turin, Italy, where it was sold on 26 July. With a base price in excess of €170.000, the Motorsport Collectors Edition added nearly €75.000 to the base price, with the total invoiced price reaching nearly €250.000. Since then, the car has been used on a limited basis, covering just 1,254 kilometers at the time of cataloging. As a result of this limited use, the vehicle remains in fantastic condition today while offering a nearly new car experience. More than just an AMG-tuned SL, this car combines the best of the AMG with the heritage of the SL range to celebrate the triumphant 2022 Formula 1 season. With only 100 examples produced, it should be a welcome addition to any Mercedes or Formula One enthusiast's collection.

369 pound-feet of torque.

In 1971, Mercedes-Benz announced the replacement of the SL Pagoda range: the new model would be known as the ‘R107’ and would combine ultimate comfort with the now essential safety features. The 280 SL version, which this model belongs to, heralded the return of the 6-cylinder engine and was unveiled to the public in mid-1974 to meet the demands of a clientele concerned about fuel consumption.

This model is a European version delivered in this elegant Astral Silver colour, which we can trace back to 1991 in the Hérault region. It then passed into the hands of an enthusiast in the Gard region, before returning to the Hérault in 2016 and joining the current owner’s collection. Today, it is in very satisfactory condition: the paintwork, which was redone many years ago, remains free of any notable defects, as does the original upholstery. It should be noted that the hard top is still present and in excellent condition.

Our test drive revealed no particular problems. In early 2024, nearly €4,000 were invested in a major overhaul; as the car has not been driven much since then, a routine service may be worth considering. Offered at a very attractive estimate, this 280 SL is now the perfect purchase for an aspiring collector looking to add a convertible to their garage that is just as comfortable in summer as it is in winter!

For many, this is the first true supercar. Originally, it was a pure racing car - type name SLR - of which only 10 were built in 1952. Between 1955 and 1957, 1.400 Gullwings were produced : it was the first production car with fuel injection. A key feature was its extremely rigid construction thanks to a tubular chassis. What captures the imagination most are the gullwing doors, which inspired many nicknames. 29 ex. with aluminum bodywork were also built, resulting in a weight saving of 158 kg. The 300 SL has long been a benchmark in classic car valuation, somewhat like the gold standard.
