This is one of many variations on the Mercedes-Benz SL-Class from the seventies and eighties. This is a 420 SL, with, as the name implies, a 4.2-liter V-8 engine; it would be from the 1980s.

Taken at C&G Auto, Caldwell, New Jersey.

The Mercedes-Benz 300SL was the first iteration of the SL-Class grand tourer convertibles and fastest production car of its day. Internally numbered W198, it was introduced in 1954 as a two-seat sports car with distinctive gull-wing doors and later offered as an open roadster.

Built by Daimler-Benz AG, the fuel-injected production model was based on the company's highly successful yet somewhat less powerful carbureted 1952 race car, the Mercedes-Benz 300SL (W194).

Here's a gorgeous Mercedes-Benz SL Class from the 1950s in the West Essex Memorial Day procession - my last shot of the 2007 parade.

Seems weird, though, that a car from a country we fought in both world wars would be in a Memorial Day parade.

One of the first cars in the parade was this great looking Mercedes SL convertible from the sixties. The Mercedes-Benz SL Class, in either convertible or hardtop form, is still a popular car among American motorists.

The store in the background is the Hampton House furniture store, a local institution and one of those retail businesses that make Montclair Montclair.

"Mercedes-Benz went a step further in 1992 with the introduction of the 600 SL. This was the first 12-cylinder to join the SL family, and with 394 hp (290 kW) and six-litre displacement it fulfilled the dreams of many car enthusiasts.

Like all Mercedes-Benz passenger cars, the SL models were given new model designations in June 1993. The letters representing the vehicle class were now placed first, so the 600 SL became the SL 600. The revolutionary innovation of 1995 was the Electronic Stability Program ESP®. This pioneering driving safety system, which reduced the risk of skidding in critical handing situations, was available as standard equipment in the SL 600 and as an option in the SL 500."

In 1971, Mercedes-Benz announced the replacement of the SL Pagoda range: the new model would be known as the ‘R107’ and would combine ultimate comfort with the now essential safety features. The 280 SL version, which this model belongs to, heralded the return of the 6-cylinder engine and was unveiled to the public in mid-1974 to meet the demands of a clientele concerned about fuel consumption.

This model is a European version delivered in this elegant Astral Silver colour, which we can trace back to 1991 in the Hérault region. It then passed into the hands of an enthusiast in the Gard region, before returning to the Hérault in 2016 and joining the current owner’s collection. Today, it is in very satisfactory condition: the paintwork, which was redone many years ago, remains free of any notable defects, as does the original upholstery. It should be noted that the hard top is still present and in excellent condition.

Our test drive revealed no particular problems. In early 2024, nearly €4,000 were invested in a major overhaul; as the car has not been driven much since then, a routine service may be worth considering. Offered at a very attractive estimate, this 280 SL is now the perfect purchase for an aspiring collector looking to add a convertible to their garage that is just as comfortable in summer as it is in winter!

The 1989 Geneva Motor Show was marked by the presentation of the brand new version of the SL, dubbed the R129. This generation represented a real technological leap forward compared to the R107, with the introduction of advanced safety systems such as ESP and a retractable hardtop.

This model was delivered to its first owner on June 22, 1998. The color combination chosen is also one of the most elegant, combining “Midnight Blue” (code 904O) with an exclusive bluegray leather interior (code 518A). Today, the car has only 4,650 km on the odometer. Of course, this model is literally in mint condition, both in terms of its bodywork and interior. Both are extremely well preserved, as is its hardtop, which is still in place and in mint condition.

Our test drive showed us that the car was in good working order, despite the very low mileage in recent years. Of course, a general overhaul would be necessary if the next owner wanted to run this car. Like the other SL in this collection, our car is one of those “exceptions that prove the rule”... The vast majority of SLs, especially in the R129 generation, have clocked up tens of thousands of miles thanks to their outstanding road handling qualities. Finding a model with such reasonable mileage is already a challenge in itself, and will become even more so in the coming years. So don’t miss this opportunity to add to your collection the SL from the 1990s, a symbol of a generation, in such exceptional condition. This opportunity may never come again...
