Ipswich AEC Regent Vs Nos. 65 & 60 at the rear of Constantine Road Depot in 1981. No. 60 was withdrawn that year. It belonged to the second batch of AEC Regent Vs delivered in 1963 (Nos. 56-62); it was actually the last of the batch to arrive (in early August), this permitting final withdrawal of the remaining trolleybuses later that month. Bus No. 65 remained in service with Ipswich until the last day of two man operation on 2nd. August 1986. 65 still survives; it was seen in 2013 stored at Quantock Motor Services depot at Bishops Lydeard, near Taunton.

Rural services taken over by Ipswich Buses during the 1980s were mainly operated by a separate fleet of "Suffolkbus" vehicles, but buses from the main fleet regularly assisted, as seen here with Falcon 112 arriving at Old Cattle Market with a Suffolkbus working.

Route 2A had its origins in the horse tramway to Derby Road Station opened in 1833, later converted to electric tramway operation and then to trolleybuses. The route was progressively extended, with trolleybuses reaching the Airport (the last trolleybus extension) in 1947. The route was recommended for complete closure as early as 1951 but has somehow survived until the present day, albeit with much modification and now a much reduced level of service. Note the trolleybus traction poles. Trolleybuses last ran on Route 2A in 1956, but still served this stretch of road until conversion of the Rushmere Heath route in 1962.

Always found these post-facelift versions to look more dated than the pre-facelift models. This particular example was registered in Ipswich and has an MOT till July.

In murky conditions, Ipswich AEC Regent V No. 62 is seen leaving Electric House for Whitton, c1979. When Carr Street was closed to vehicular traffic, for a short time the cross town service from Rushmere Heath to Whitton was diverted to run via Electric House and thence via Lloyds Avenue to regain its previous route at Cornhill.
Ipswich's first motorbus route, introduced in May 1950, ran out of town via Norwich Road and thence via White House Road (seen here) and on into Lovetofts Drive (seen on the left in the far distance). This route was abandoned in 1953 when the Bramford Road service was converted to motorbuses and extended into White House Estate, leaving Lovetofts Drive and White House Road without buses. However, in June 1981 the Bramford Road service was extended from Ulster Avenue to run via Lovetofts Drive and White House Road to Whitton, buses returning to this location for the first time in nearly thirty years.

Ipswich Atlantean No. 32 has just pulled out of the old Rushmere Heath terminus and heads back into town along Woodbridge Road East in this 1983 view. It will soon turn left into Heath Road and then proceed into town along Foxhall Road. Later on, Ipswich Buses ceased running along this part of Woodbridge Road East although it is still well served by other operators working beyond the town boundary.

A reminder of how this part of the Bus Station looked before rebuilding in 2013. Plus a reminder of one of several retailers that have tried their luck in this unit at the front of the Tower Ramparts Shopping Centre which opened in 1986. Littlewoods eventually decided they couldn't make a go of this site; nor could subsequent occupiers and the unit has spent considerable periods out of use. Iceland are expected to open a new branch here in 2014.

This bus received a special livery for the Ipswich Borough Transport Centenary Celebrations of 1980. In 1981 this was replaced by another "one-off" livery as shown here. It was like the new standard green livery introduced in 1980 but with brown instead of green. Over the next year or so, 21 was used to try out several experimental liveries.
Northern Counties of Wigan got very much involved in building double-deck bodies especially for Greater Manchester but even in the early Eighties when the single-deck market was flat due to the influx of Transits and Sherpas they still managed to find single-deck orders like this one for some Dennis Falcons for Ipswich.
Ipswich Atlantean No. 30 at Electric House in 1983. The space on the right of the picture had previously been occupied by Tower Ramparts School but was now used for an open air market. This would soon be replaced by a new shopping centre.
Bus 25 is still in the predominantly cream livery introduced by General Manager George Pickup in the mid 1970s to try and "brighten up" the Ipswich image. All 35 Atlanteans delivered in 1976/77 received this livery from new, and six other Ipswich buses were repainted in a modified version of this scheme. It looked very smart when new but the picture graphically shows how quickly the appearance could deteriorate in inclement weather!
