picture postcard by Shell tankers.
Sepia PHKW 72.981 tons
When built in 1961 she was the largest ship in the Dutch merchant navy.
Shell colour scheme soon changed to: red funnels with yellow shell, and black hull.
As in this picture.
Might be easy in maintenance, but it did not improve her looks.
When i joined her, in march 1964, "Sepia" was the second largest vessel in the Netherlands.
Only "Esso Den Haag" PDZK with 90.000 tons was newer and bigger at the time.
The ESSO tanker was built in 1963 by Verolme Dok- & Scheepsbouw Mij .
"Sepia" especially looked gigantic to me as I had been sailing on a variety of small ships and 3 deep sea trawlers.

For the first time walking towards those front windows in the wheelhouse i could not believe my eyes and i will never forget the impression that immense foredeck made on me.
Yes, she was very big and very beautiful and a pleasure to be on.
Having my cabin midships, i was impressed by the absence of noise and vibrations.
Only the water rushing by was heard, the sound of silence.

"Sepia" and her 4 sisters most certainly were among the nicest ever built for Shell.
