This model series was the first to officially receive the name S-Class, meaning Sonderklasse or 'Super Class'. It was produced from September 1972 to September 1980. The S-Class has traditionally been the platform on which new technical innovations are introduced. For the W116, the most important were : ABS (optional) from 1978, the first diesel engine and the first turbo diesel in a high-end model (300 SD), a double-wishbone front suspension and reinforced safety cell and improved crumple zones. This very original 350 SE has only 70.000 km and was purchased new by the current owner's grandfather.

Venerable GM 42 Class unit 4204, owned an operated by The Lachlan Valley Railway was relaunched into service after overhaul on February 13, 2010 with a tour to Dungog and back. 4204 was accompanied by similar veteran units S317 and GM10, both on loan from Southern Shorthaul Railroad. GM10, recently purchased by SSR from CFCLA is the oldest diesel locomotive still in commercial operation in Australia.

There are indeed several Mercedes S-Class models that were extended in the style of the Mercedes 600 Pullman. Apparently, there remained a certain demand for such luxury limousines, even after production was stopped in Sindelfingen. They seem to compete in luxury and extravagant equipment. With a length of 6.998 mm, this is the longest one we could find. It was built by one of the most productive tuners, especially when it comes to Mercedes : Schulz Tuning. He created the most diverse models, preferably bearing the star, ranging from a Golf clone based on a Mercedes 190 to an entire series of G-Class off-road vehicles with 6 wheels, long before Mercedes did it themselves.
