500 SGS Gull Wing at the IAA 2017.
The 500 SGS Gull Wing was a gull wing conversion of the S-class by Styling Garage. Around 60 units were made between 1979 to 1986.
The distinctive EMD chatter of S302 and T386 is clearly audible over the distant thunder as the pair approach Murtoa with 7769V loaded mineral sands train from Hopetoun. Shortly before the train arrived, a large storm thrashed the Horsham/Stawell/Ararat area, leaving us fearful if we would have to watch the passage of the train from inside the car!

1998 - 2005

The design work for the coupé began immediately after the approval of the sedan. Special attention was given to improved aerodynamics, with a drag coefficient of 0,34. The SEC luxury coupé was presented at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1982. The 560 followed 3 years later as the most powerful model, with a new V8 engine producing 300 hp. At the time, the S-Class belonged to the very best available on the car market, especially with this engine. This coupé also had no competition in its market segment. But it came with a hefty price tag - it was more expensive than a Ferrari Testarossa.

The S class was the first class of steam locomotive to be wholly designed and built in Western Australia. Three engines were built at Midland in 1943, intended for use on goods trains. Another seven, including S 549, were constructed after the Second World War. S 549 entered service on 9 October, 1947 and was named 'Greenmount'. All ten locomotives of the class worked till the end of steam in Western Australia in 1971, with S 549 hauling the last scheduled steam train at Collie on 24 December, 1971. It was then set aside and stored, being written off on 14 August, 1972. On 2 December, 1972 it was moved into the Rail Transport Museum where it sat on display till September, 1985 when work began on its restoration to operating order. After much effort on the part of ARHS members S 549 was returned to steam for the 1997 steam season. After a period hauling tour trains for Hotham Valley Tourist Railway at Pinjarra, S 549 was returned to Bassendean on 2 October 1999. In December 2006 it was steamed to the railway centenary event at Dowerin but has since been displayed at Bassendean.

W116
The Mercedes 450 SEL 6.9 is the top-of-the-line version of the W116 model S-Class luxury saloon. It was built by Daimler-Benz in Stuttgart, and based on the LWB version of the W116 chassis. It featured the largest engine of any non-American production car post WW2. The 6.9 was first shown to the motoring press at the Geneva Motor Show in 1974, and produced between 1975 and 1981. The 6.9 is among the first vehicles ever produced with electronically controlled anti-lock brakes, first introduced by Mercedes and Bosch in 1978. Only 7.380 examples left the factory. This example was previously owned by the French pop star Claude François.

The Mercedes 300 SEL 6.3 came out in 1968 as top-of-the-line model of the W108/109 luxury series, predecessors of the today's S-Class. The engine and transmission were taken from the 600. This powerful, comfortable long-distance sedan is fitted as standard with automatic transmission, power steering and many more extras - not something that could be taken for granted in the late 1960s.

For the 2013 'Diesel Day' event at Trainworks, CFCL Australia supplied two 1957-vintage S Class locomotives to represent modern diesel operations. After the initial amusement that these locomotives were in-fact older than many of the exhibits, one must realise that the pair is an excellent representation of modern operations in Australia - companies are still using and relying on these old veterans for day to day operations, and they're still a very relevant part of the scene.
For the 2013 'Diesel Day' event at Trainworks, the NSW Rail Transport Museum operated restored MLW/ALCo 40 Class leader 4001 as the motive power for the loop line trains between Thirlmere and Buxton, a different take on the more traditional motive power - steam locomotive 2705 (or a CPH Railmotor).
Two veteran locomotives of very different designs, with different engines, from different builders, for different rail systems on different gauges, united in 2013! MLW/ALCo import 4001 is seen here putting the loop line cars away in the yard, whilst local Clyde Engineering/EMD products S311 and S300 prepare for departure back to Goulburn.

The technology vehicle will display the future of Mercedes modular set of hybrid systems at the IAA in Frankfurt in 2009. The Vision S 500 Plug-in Hybrid can drive up for up to 30 km solely on electricity and therefore without producing any local emissions. The efficient drive system combined with the CO2 bonus for the battery-electric driving mode enables the vehicle to achieve a certified consumption on only 3,2 liters of petrol per 100 km.
