From this angle, the color zoning is very obvious. For this image, the sapphire is on a white sheet of paper for contrast.
Fortunately for the stone, one of the wider bands of lighter color falls at the greatest width of the stone -- this allowed the stone to look quite a bit lighter.

Sapphire pool in Yellowstone's Biscuit Basin:
Temperature 200-202°F Dimensions 18x30 feet. Sapphire Pool, named for its blue, crystal-clear water and for its resemblance to an Oriental sapphire, was once a placid hot pool. It was not until after the 1959 earthquake that major eruptions occurred. For several years following the earthquake powerful eruptions at two hour intervals reached 150 feet. The force of the eruptions caused the crater to double in size, destroying the biscuit-like formations around its edge, and the crystal-clear water became murky. By 1968 Sapphire ceased to function as a true geyser. Today Sapphire still retains its crystal-clear, blue water, and still violently boils and surges occasionally.

Please note that I have recently detected some sites using my jewellery images without permission. Unbelievably one company is actually attempting to sell our designs off their website using only my images (the Police have been called in this instance...!)
I am very happy to provide content for blogs and articles but please ask my permission and remember you always need to cite me and Rumour Jewellery as the source.

Hebe ‘Sapphire’ is an upright, evergreen, bushy shrub, 40 in (1 m) high. The leaves are spear-shaped, mid-green, about 1.2 in (3 cm) long, with red edges – spring new growth is reddish. The leaves colour well in winter, the whole plant taking on a reddish hue. The flowers are purple, July to August.

This stone started out as a classic "dog tooth" sapphire crystal. The owner was rather taken with the obvious color zoning and asked for a design that would show it off if possible.
In order to do this, and save as much weight as possible, I cut the stone with long step facets along the length of the crystal. On the wider base of the crystal, I put some brilliant-type facets to add some interest on that end.
In person, the stone has a lighter tone than what you see here and, when it is rocked, the color zoning is obvious when viewed at approximately 45* from the table.
In terms of photography (or, rather, my photography skills), it was easiest to show the color zoning from the pavilion side -- check out the next two images.
