Former Guernsey Railway Company No. 77

Newton Abbot Station, which was extensively rebuilt by the Great Western Railway in 1927. Standing outside is DL872 (872 ATA), numerically the first of 17 high-capacity Metro-Cammell Leyland Atlanteans ordered as a gamble in 1959 for Torquay services. They were instantly liked by crews and passengers, although they caused the engineering department considerable headaches. DL872 is owned by Stagecoach South West and is in original condition.

To commemorate 100 years since the founding of the Devon General Omnibus & Touring Company in 1919, a bus rally and running day was held at Newton Abbot Racecourse on Sunday 4th August 2019. The event was well-attended by enthusiasts and the general public, and numerous vehicles were on display, mainly former Devon General buses but also featuring vehicles from other fleets in the South West and further afield. The event was well supported by local enthusiast groups and by Stagecoach South West, the successors to Devon General, who had a number of their own vehicles and staff in attendance.

A look back at the day before the Retrobus Running Day that took place in and around Winchester on Sunday 19th March 2017.

The event was organised by the Hampshire Bus Preservation team who had use of the since-demolished depot building within the bus station site.

Six of the vehicles to be seen at the excellent running day were present on the Saturday. These were:

HDL25E, Bristol RE / ECW, Southern Vectis;

KPM91E, Bristol FLF / ECW, Brighton Hove & District open topper;

VMO234H, Bristol LH / ECW, Alder Valley;

XDL122L, Bristol RE / ECW coach, Southern Vectis;

A mini running day using 9 Bristol REs and an AEC Merlin took place in Winchester in early November 2019 ably organised by the Hampshire Bus Preservation Group. Four routes were operated from The Broadway running to Bishops Sutton via Alresford Station (X71), to Alresford Station via Itchen Abbas (71), a Winchester circular via Pitt (45) and a run down to Otterbourne (47). There was also an Alresford to Cheriton shuttle (67). It was a great day with some lovely autumnal countryside views and a wonderful soundtrack!

Buses used on the day were:

Tram Museum Running day, 1981

On Sunday 25th February the Epping Ongar Railway organised a 'Country Buses' running day based on North Weald Station using the resources of Roger Wright's 'London Bus Co.'

As dusk approached buses gathered at Old Harlow.

In March 2019 the Amersham & District Motorbus Society held a classic bus running day to commemorate 40 years since the withdrawal of London Transport's last RF buses back in March 1979. The last two routes operated were the 218 & 219 from Kingston depot and they provided a frequent service from Kingston and Staines/Weybridge.

At the 2019 event my shots were taken in Kingston Cromwell Road bus station, Weybridge The Heights, and Staines bus station.

The 36th King Alfred Running Day took place on May Day bank holiday 2019. The event is based in Winchester and attracts around 40 buses and coaches operating a large number of routes throughout the day.

I took some photos in Hursley, Otterbourne, Sutton Scotney and Winchester, trying to avoid the extremely busy Broadway terminus.

Returning to Aldridge for a day was former resident, the ex-Protours (IoM) Bedford (BMN-111-D when resident in the Museum). The long run from Essex for the day was appreciated and it added another make to the assembled company.

The 10th and final Alton Classic Bus & Country Pub Running Day hosted by the Hants & Surrey Bristol RE Group took place on Saturday 20th July 2019.

For one last time, on the Saturday before the annual Alton Bus Rally (a separate event held on the Sunday), the Hampshire countryside reverberated with the sound of Bristol RE buses trundling between country pubs and Alton Railway Station.

There were 16 buses involved made up of 14 Bristol REs (including one used as the control bus), a Leyland Leopard and a Foden PVRF6 acting as a replacement for another RE.

Bristol RE / ECW bus: HDL25E, PPM210G (control bus), FWC439H, HFM196J, TDL563K, XLJ726K, JMW169P;

Bristol RE / ECW coach: 837SUO, AFM105B, OAX9F, TFM267K;

Bristol RE / Marshall: SJA352K;

Bristol RE / Alexander (Belfast): BXI2565, BXI2599;

Leyland Leopard / ECW: HNE641N;

Foden PVRF6 / Metalcraft: NTU125.

The 9th Alton Classic Bus & Country Pub Running Day took place in and around Alton in Hampshire on Saturday 14th July 2018. The annual event is organised by the Hants & Surrey 'Bristol RE' Group who run 4 different routes serving 20 local pubs.

My shots this year were taken in Alton, Chawton, East Worldham, Hawkley, Holybourne, Selbourne and Upper & Lower Farringdon.

A Routemaster is never out of place at a rally or running day and the 58 year old RM2208/CUV208C looked very fine at this FoKAB event. With blinds displayed featuring locations in the capital and the historic capital of Wessex and England, the bus was operating route 93 between St Catherine's Park & Ride and Twyford Waterworks which had an open day.

Part of the Running Day was former Devon General 518 (CTT 518C, which operated some journeys on the Teignmouth-Dawlish Warren service. A 1965 AEC Regent V with 69-seater Park Royal bodywork, it worked in regular service until 1978 and its duties would have included route 2. It is seen here resting between duties on Teignmouth Seafront.

On Sunday 31st May 2015 the Devon General Omnibus Trust (DGOT) organised a running day based on Teignmouth Sea Front, as part of the 2015 Teignmouth Heritage Transport & Bike Festival.

The event commemorated 35 years since the end of crew operation on the busy route 2 (Exeter - Dawlish - Teignmouth - Newton Abbot). Buses of varying vintages, mostly from the former Devon General and the neighbouring Western National fleets, offered free rides between Teignmouth and Dawlish Warren, and along the Teign Valley. Several other buses were also on display at Teignmouth. The event was supported by Stagecoach South West, who acquired Devon General in 2003 and had present one of the ADL Enviro400s that operate route 2 today.

The Rear Engined Bus Running Day took place on a glorious March Sunday in 2016 and was based in and around Winchester. The event was organised by the Hampshire Bus & Coach Preservation team who on March 19th 2017 will be hosting the RetroBus Running Day, also based in Winchester.

Seen entering Winchester bus station at the 2016 event is Southdown Bristol VR / ECW H43/31F 275 JWV275W.

925 (MSJ 499 - originally 925 GTA) was one of nine convertible open-top Matro-Cemmell bodied Lyyland Atlanteans purchased in 1961 for seafront services in Torbay; they replaced the elderly 1934 AEC Regents that had been converted to open-top in 1955 and proved there was demand for such services. All nine were named after famous seafarers, 925 being Admiral Blake. Sadly 925 has lost its original registration number.

Although blinded for a former Torbay Summer Season route, on Sunday 4th September it was offering circular tours of Exmouth as part of the Devon General Running Day.

A good day today, with RM506 returning to passenger service for the first time for over a year, At Aldridge Transport Museum's evening running event. Took her to Walsall, Lichfield and Sutton Coldfield, with good loads each time. Even did a very rare selfie to remember the day.

Grey Cars was the trading name for the coaching and tourism department of Devon General. Seen here are TCR960 (960 HTT), a Willowbrook-bodied AEC Reliance new in 1962, and AEC Reliance 890 ADV. The Willowbrook coach is only 7'6" wide, as it was intended for tours of Dartmoor and the narrow bodywork was a great help on the local roads.

Bristol VR/ECW 559 (ATA 559L) was ordered by Western National but delivered in 1973 to Devon General, the two companies being under a single management under the aegis of the National Bus Company by then. In 1986 it was converted to open-top and reallocated to Southern National in Weymouth, where it operated until 2001.

559 operated in service as part of the Running Day, hence the blind display.

DR817 (VDV 817) is one of 23 AEC Regent V with 56-seater open platform rear entrance Weymann-bodied buses that were purchased between 1955 and 1957 for the Exeter City services operated jointly with the municipal City of Exeter Transport Undertaking. For many years the City Council and local Police would not allow doored buses to operate on Exeter City services, which put the municipal undertaking at a financial disadvantage in the 1960s and led to its sale to Devon General, by that time part of the National Bus Company, in April 1970. DR817 is seen at Newton Abbot Racecourse on the shuttle service to the Railway Station.
