Lonely benches and silent playgrounds beneath smoke covered skies, out of season hurricanes to the south, Yellowstone is rumbling, murder hornets being sighted north of Seattle. Does anyone have a white flag?
Enterprise City Park, AL, USA
We don't have fog horns here, but the feeling is such that down by the seashore there certainly should be a great rumbling horn.
Great Egret fleeing in the fog. Probably the closest that I have ever gotten to one of these.

Rumbling out of the north face of Cowan Tunnel, K814 with CSXT 7222 on point is cresting the top of the mountain. With the H289 pushers on the rear, K814 would have no issues on this wet and gloomy morning.
Rumbling through the wide valley west of Craigsville on the Buckingham Branch. The Great North Mountain range forms the backdrop with just a hint of snow on Elliott Knob in the far distance.

Overlooking few lakes with many waterfalls.
It takes upwards of six hours to explore the lakes on foot through 18km of wooden footbridges and pathways which snake around the edges and under and across the rumbling water.
With storms rumbling to the north, loaded coal train T315 from Newell, PA rolls past the NYC-style Type G signals at CP 93 near Edison, OH on the former Big 4 line to Columbus. Unit trains of coal and grain (and their empty counterparts) are the only semi-regular moves on this once busy portion of the former New York Central between Galion and Columbus.
With late season thunderstorms rumbling over the Book Cliffs in the background, Union Pacific’s LJP45 “dirt train” local approaches Mounds, Utah, late on the afternoon of November 21, 2003. Rio Grande EMD SD40T-2 Tunnel Motors Nos. 5390, 5371 and 5349 bracket a UP SD40-2 for power, and the train will soon be at the junction of the Sunnyside Branch at West Mounds, ready to head west on the Green River Subdivision to Helper.

The rock formations at Rumbling Kern are very impressive. But on this occasion I was finding it difficult to resolve the abstract composition I wanted among the reflective rock pools. So I turned round and had a go at the wider view looking out to sea. The waves washing over the rocky foreshore provided both another element to work with and a different dynamic. It wasn't the picture I was after. But you can't force these things. It's better just to go with the flow.

Rumbling through a blaze of red, orange, green, and yellow, CSX N760 navigates a tight curve in Dante, Virginia. The matched pair of CSXT ET44ACs are at the front door of the local Union Baptist Church.
Aedan stood in near silence at the door, only the distant rumbling of waves breaking on the shore and squeals of gulls broke the silence yet didn’t break the calm. He knocked at the door again but with a bit more effort this time.
“Ya voy, ya voy!” came a feminine voice from behind the door even as the door cracked open to the extent that the attached chain would permit it. Brown eyes at chest height to him peered out the door at Aedan.

winds are still rumbling but not howling; rain has stopped, but expected to change back to snow overnight…
I135-17 wasn't the only thing rumbling through Harpers Ferry on a stormy sunday afternoon, as the friendly conductor flashes a wave while they flew through the iconic Harper's Ferry Depot. Standing next to me was a young man in an orange CSX shirt, thrilled to hear they were coming when I walked in with my scanner. It was genuinely fantastic to see his enthusiasm for a train, any train, and to see his excitement as we listened to them calling signals, the low tones of a Gevo echoing off the mountains. His enthusiasm for an intermodal with a common leader was a great reminder to me that they don't always have to be rare, unique, or special. Sometimes a hotshot with a common leader fits the bill just fine, and in this case, I135-17 sure did.
Rumbling Kern, a rock formation with a small hidden beach, was once the haunt of whisky smugglers bootlegging their contraband up and down the Northumberland coastline.
The Mistaya River rises in Peyto Lake, it leaves the flat-bottomed valley and plunges into this narrow canyon. The rumbling water is still at work---cutting, abrading and dissolving the limestone rock.

The NYNJ Rail crew takes four empty gondolas down the former Cross Harbor Railroad street trackage on First Avenue toward Bush Terminal for their sole customer on the line, Sims Metal Management. The crew would drop the cars at Bush Terminal and deliver the cars to Sims located in Industry City the following morning due to a jammed gate along the line. The Knoxville Locomotive Works built SE10B locomotive is passing one of about a dozen abandoned spurs branching off of the First Avenue trackage that once served the various industries located along the line. Unfortunately, all the industry has either dried up or relocated and smaller industrial or commercial businesses now occupy the once rail served warehouses along First Avenue. The spur pictured is quite unique in that it branches off to the right and then curves left to cross back over the main track and into the brick warehouse to the left to avoid too tight of a curve. Sims receives cars once a week or once every two weeks and it appears Bush Terminal may be getting cars to transload every now and then as well. Brooklyn, NY
Mega geek moment for me: CN L519 rumbling over Kimbles Viaduct, crossing Scrubgrass Road on the Porter Cutoff with BLE 905 leading.
I have long looked at photos of the Bessemer and Lake Erie and wished I could go shoot some orange, but there is plenty of reasons why I shoot the same 50 miles of the Lurgan most days. Luckily the stars aligned on this day and I was ready to seize the opportunity.
I saw this viaduct earlier in the day and hoped the sun would be right on the return trip. With J. A. Clark as my rabbit I followed him back and was thrilled to find enough light still on the bridge for a westbound shot. Thanks again Jon!
A walk from Dunkeld.
Dunkeld, Perthshire, Scotland.
Just down from Rumbling Bridge ( which received it's name because of the rumbling sound of the water which passes under it ) is a rocky area where I frequently enjoy my picnic lunch on this walk. It is a lovely spot to relax a while and refuel.
Utah Railway SD50S units No. 6064 and 6062 pull a 14-car RUT310 local through Welby Yard in West Jordan, Utah the evening of Sept. 9, 2004.
The Canadian Pacific #472 EB train rumbling thru the unincorporated hamlet of New Lebanon, IL just minutes after the sun disappeared under the horizon. I was out for all of 10 minutes for this shot, and the temperature was seemingly much colder than just 20 minutes earlier when I shot the sun starting to approach the horizon. Just about as cold as a photo I took during the same time of day at Walker Rd, just a month earlier. Special thanks to Bill Meier who helped me immensely on the logistics and timing of getting this shot

More Alco action and 251 rumblings from the Southern Tier. Delaware & Hudson RS-11 No. 5003 switches East Binghamton Yard, further up the Lackawanna main line, on 21 June 1987. The 5003 was the only high hood unit to wear the blue with stripes scheme, and by the time this picture was taken, the paint had faded away to reveal the original lighting stripe dress underneath.
Rumbling through the community of Nashotah, a hodge podge of random power leads a loaded grainer east on a typical wintry day.
Running a bit late, Pan Am's WAPO is rumbling across the nearly 1200' bridge spanning the Fore River, which divides Portland and South Portland. A pair of SD45 carbodied SD40-2s are bracketing an ex-CN GP40-2LW, with a fairly short train behind them. In the foreground is one of the piers for Sprague, which is just out of sight to the left of me, and also hosts the former Portland Terminal Yard 6. The two big buildings in the background are Portland's Mercy Hospital; the one on the right is the older one, and on the left is the newer one.
A bleak snowy winter day on the Nevada Northern Railway finds a short hopper train rumbling slowly past the gorgeous 1907 built East Ely depot designed by Fredrick Hale and constructed from locally quarried sandstone.
Alco RS-3 #109 was built in November 1950 for Kenecott Ray Mines division and was transferred here to the Nevada Mines in 1970. She hauled ore between Ruth and McGill by here daily for 13 years until the mine and smelter were shuttered. She was sold to Los Angeles Department of Water and Power alomg with the entire mainline to Cobre in 1987 and then at some later date was donated back to the museum where she has remained in service in her KCC orange paint.
