Today we had nice clouds just after some rain in the Silicon Valley. I headed to Alviso, hoping the clouds would lift for a sunset shoot, but that didn't pan out. I stayed until darkness, and waited for the next train to pass. Boy, are they loud. You don't need a time table, when you hear the train you have plenty of time to set up the camera and wait for the shot.

Motive power consists of three Burlington Northern GE C30-7s mixed in with a Union Pacific SD40-2 and a (rare for a coal train) Cotton Belt GP60. The old single-track main line went through the cut on the right, and through Nebraska’s only railroad tunnel.

Elephants are sentient creatures. When this one arrived making a soft rumbling contact call to others in the herd we were thrilled to watch it then plant its huge pillar like legs firmly in position before raising its powerful trunk which it twisted and coiled round a thick main branch of this Camelthorn Acacia in order to shake the fruit to the ground.

There's a creature in my closet
I can hear him rumbling 'round
The demons screaming in the distance
Creates such a humbling sound
The monster that's outside my window
He's like family to me now
The things that people are afraid of
Never let me down

Driving, looking. Looking for telltale flashes in the dark clouds. Looking for a touch of brightness, a swirl of colour, a crack in the sky where the light might come pouring through. At Masefield - a rural municipality, pop. 0 in the 2006 census, which I find hard to believe since there are cows and houses and I'm sure the cows aren't herding themselves - I turned up the dirt road at the cemetery. Stopped right here.
In moments, light flooded the scene. The thick clouds appeared to be mammatus in early formation. At least there was no rotation or other indication of a tornado in the works (although that would have been very exciting). I was able to sit in my car atop a little hill, high and dry, as golden light spread across the land.

We don't have fog horns here, but the feeling is such that down by the seashore there certainly should be a great rumbling horn.
Great Egret fleeing in the fog. Probably the closest that I have ever gotten to one of these.
