All year our birds and critters are provided with healthy food-less in summer, more in winter...This has provided us not only with a large variety of both, but endless happiness in watching them 😃

A street underneath an elevated train station. The train tracks are above the row of columns ahead.Pedestrians on the street below (and probably homeowners as well) can hear rumbling trains arriving or departing the station. The stairs (unseen) leading up to the station platform are just off to right of the pedestrians, and also on the left side of the street as well.Sometimes people run up the stairs to try and catch their train if they're running late for work.

Keeping the Alaska theme went searching in the archives for other Alaskan wildlife. No trip to AK would ever be complete without a moose spotted. On this particular trip, we were spending time in Chena Hot Springs to celebrate our anniversary. We decided to go for a walk after dinner. Of course, we knew that moose were around in the area, but hadn't spotted any as of yet in the area. The thing about moose is that by the time you hear rumbling in the brush, it's usually promptly followed by a spotting of some sort of wildlife. In this case it was a fully shed male moose ... and it wasn't far off. We both surprised each other a bit. We stood still and talked calmly to it (and to each other) and tried not to startle it or give it cause to charge. It all worked out so nicely and I'm so glad that I was able to grab a few shots of it before it continued on its way. Nature can be so amazing.

Yesterday evening our power blew out - again - and a major storm came rumbling through. When I saw the potential, I grabbed my oldest lens (the manual focus Nikon 24mm f/2.8) and tripod and drove to the edge of town where I set up inside my car, hoping for a few good lightning strikes within my field of view.

Bonus: the strobe from the sky caught a cloud of insects - maybe mayflies, possibly craneflies as their legs seem really long. They appear only in this one shot. Not quite as exciting as Bill Bowman's bat, but I'll take it.

It was a great storm to shoot, as the rain held off for almost 45 minutes while I watched the light show and shot frame after frame. I drove to three or four locations; needless to say, the best lightning bolts occurred while I was in transit. It's always like that. I should just pick a spot and stay there, but I'm a slow learner.

When the skies finally opened up, I drove home in blinding rain. Good thing I know the road well. I could barely see past the hood of my car, and definitely couldn't see the pavement. I just tried to stay out of the ditches, and somehow managed to navigate back to the safety of my driveway.

By then the power was back on. All's well that ends well.

TAKE ME HOME – JESS GLYNNE

MAKE THE MOST OF WINTER'S WAYS

Within my inner sanctum I grow stronger

and wonder what the weather's like outside

the fiery storms; the rumbling of distant thunder

I wonder if it even now subsides

my tears no longer fall like rain from Heaven

the salt dries on my cheeks as with the wind

I venture out my toe to test the water

and let the temperature so pleasurable outside in

for some it may seem cold and Winter's answer

makes retreat a necessary part of this season's days

but for me who missed the Spring and then the Summer

I need to make the most of Winter's ways

so I took myself to look at my sweet ocean

that to some may seem so bleak and perhaps grey

but for me it holds such beauty beyond all reason

as I breathe in all the goodness of this bay

a seagull, just like me; he tests the water

to see if it will feel good 'neath his feet

like the pathway that I choose from this day onwards

to rise above it all and not concede defeat

I smile at him, but he is quite oblivious

a world apart and yet our worlds collide

his world is big enough to reach me and include me

and I'm content to share; be by his side

with each of us it is the same, my thoughts run through me

if we are strong to stand alone, but then

how much stronger we are when we can stand together

overlapping arm in arm we know, we ken

in quiet times it's nice to have some lone time

and to know that we are not alone is good

to have a friend who always makes us welcome

and not a stranger in our neighbourhood

I always think about a passing stranger

may one day turn to me and be my friend

so I try to help and be kind to every person

I win some and I lose some but in the very end

success is built upon the risk of trying

to make ourselves go to that extra mile

and peace begins with one thing, I'm sure of

yes, peace begins with just a single smile : 0)

On the second to last day we chased the RRVW down from Sheyenne back to almost Carrington, ND. Here, they cross 68th Ave NE just south of Sheyenne.

The Fallen Angel

A far away rumbling draws near,

An eerie calm, ensues all things,

Remain still.

Silence reigns, nature holds,

It's breath,

Carried upon shifting winds

Hear soft whispers calling, beware.

Heavens valets brake open,

Thunder quakes,

Lightening flashes splitting the,

Clouds apart.

Castaways refugee, descends,

Pleading,

Do not forsake me.

Death's shadows dance to and fro.

A crumpled figure lies motionless,

Bare pale flesh, warmed only by,

Mangled wings tattered remnants.

White feathers drifting aloft,

Aimless,

Sorrows innocent victim beseeching,

Forgiveness on bloody grounds,

Rough surf.

Humanities guardian,

Regrets shameful,

Reminder a fallen angel.

All grace replaced by broken,

Hearts loss.

With trembling hands, bony fingers,

Scratching at loosened soil.

Here she makes a holy symbol,

The sign of the cross.

Forgiving lord, heavenly father.

Bring me home unto thee.

In shroud's pitch blackness,

Beneath darkness’s abyss.

God weeps, behold gentle rains,

Merciful tears.

Thy lost lamb seeks salivations solos.

Redemption’s everlasting light,

Shines from above.

Guiding kindred’s dearest child to,

Loves unspoken embrace.

Many locals have made claims they say that you can hear the rumbling sounds of a train nearing, the steam whistle howling, and the screeching of wheels as if the train is grinding to a halt, but nothing ever appears, nothing is there at all, except for the haunting chill of the night.

The rumblings of a distant freight train could be heard echoing through the hills and yet the track was still covered with shadows from a very low sun. Hope they clear before the train arrives, sure enough a few short minutes later the morning Interstate Intermodal train rounds the majestic curve at Goondah with Aurizon locos 6025 + 6021 under beautiful lighting conditions.

Next to Kinross. A steep banked gorge but a lovely place. I had tripod balanced over edge here but thought it would make a good shot.

Rumbling, bumbling, stumbling through this beautiful area and still not where I set out to go I decided that I'd dine when I got to the train trestle (which if you tilt your head up 45 degrees you'll see) :-) and then I came upon this...... There is a downed tree similar to this wonderful fellow on which to sit and this is the view. Man I love it here. :-)

blow it up and stay a while, lots to see.

Yesterday we had some clouds in the Silicon Valley. With the possibility of some red sky on sunset I headed to Alviso. The cloud cover was too dense in the West were the sun was settling. I turned north when I could hear a train approaching.

I had the ND filter on, so the train got blurred with a 4 sec exposure. After that I took one more photo with 30 second exposure. I processed a balanced HDR photo from both RAW exposures, then blended them, taking the longer exposure for the water and shrubs.

The water has a red tint due to minerals and algae, and the ND filter made that red a bit more intense. I think the blue-gray sky and the red water and shrubs complement each other.

It was pouring down rain, lightning crashing, and thunder rumbling down the streets. Splash! Splash! Splash! With each flash of lightning behind him he could see the dim shadow of the creature behind him; hunting him, chasing him.

Turning a corner, Corry clenched his teeth. "Shit!" he exclaimed as he realized he'd turned the wrong corner and blocked himself in. Hearing the growl behind him, he turned and reached for his sides, gripping his twin blades and flicking them into a firm grip. This was it! Live or die.

"COME ON!" he screamed tauntingly, his sky blue eyes flashing under his hood. He stood there, fingers gripping his blades tight as he readied himself for the fight of his life!

After kicking back in the hammock for a good hour or so and enjoying some fresh air, a distant horn broke the silence and the INRD’s SAHW road train came rumbling out onto the trestle over the mouth of Shuffle Creek. A last minute decision was made to not even leave the hammock for the angle I had originally planed on, creating a different perspective and saving my feet from sinking a good 8 inches in muck!
