One of the world's most spectacular roads: Gorges de Galamus

Located at the heart of the Fenouillèdes massif, on the border of the departments of Aude and the Pyrénées-Orientales, in France, the Gorges de Galamus are a real challenge for drivers. It’s an amazing drive along a balcony road that is so narrow in places that two cars could not possibly pass. If you can cope with nausea inducing narrow roads with sheer drops, then this is the place for you! It’s one of the French balcony roads.
The roads to cross the gorges, extremely narrow and dangerous, are D10 and D7, and both are a challenge for car drivers. Crossing the gorges by car is possible all year but in summers the road becomes very busy and the traffic problems are obvious. In July and August there’s a special regulation. These roads through the gorges are very lovely but can also be very challenging if you are driving, with many sections too narrow for cars to pass and a strong chance you will need to reverse around a blind corner on a narrow road!
The gorges are located in the towns of Cubières-sur-Cinoble and Saint-Paul-de-Fenouillet in the Pyrénées-Orientales and have a length of 2km. There are sheer drops virtually along the entire route and enough hairpins to make a whirling dervish dizzy. A quick glance at the map at its sheer drops and serpentine twists and turns, confirms that this is no hype. Because its narrowness, it is impossible to turn back. The views are stunning for passengers but you can't stop for the driver to see the views too. The weather is unpredictable. Expect high winds often.
The route starts in Saint-Paul-de-Fenouillet a commune in the Pyrénées-Orientales department in southern France. After 9.3km going through the infamous Gorges de Galamus, the road arrives to Cubières-sur-Cinoble, a commune in the Aude department in southern France. This road is one of the most famous balcony roads in France. A balcony road is a hair-raising lane cut into the sides of sheer cliffs. It’s a kind of road not for those who fear heights. There is little room for error on these roads. It’s normal for your palms to sweat looking at those photos, imagine what it must have been like before the barriers.
Your wheels will be astounded at the wonderful views of the mountains spread out before you! They are terrible for drivers who are prone to vertigo. In many places the road is bordered by a drop of hundreds of meters (many hundreds of feet) unprotected by guardrails. It runs as a single track road along the mountainside for some distance with nowhere to pass another vehicle. Here one says a prayer that nobody is coming towards you until the road widens some kilometres further. The twisty road is carved into sheer cliff walls that drop 1,000 feet into the river gorge below, with the short 3-foot stone wall offering no safety barrier if you hit it on a bike and flip over it.
The route demands 100% concentration. This road has humbled many egos. You can go slowly, but expect to be blocked and have some difficult manoeuvres if you cross someone from the other side. It’s not for the sissies and shouldn’t be attempted by novice drivers. It’s an amazing drive through the narrow gorge with very steep and large drops to the river below!
It still remains an adrenaline-pumping journey and is definitely not for the faint of lungs, heart, or legs. The Galamus gorges extend over 2 m, a spectacular natural site with vertiginous limestone cliff faces. Words can’t describe the road and pictures don’t do it justice. It is recommended that beginner riders avoid this road. The gorges were impassable until the 1890s when the road was built by men attached to ropes.

There was a fence across the street just behind me preventing access to the roadworks, but I couldn't resist - had to squeeze inside and shoot this perspective. (I only regret, I didn't also take one zoomed-in on those tracks.)
Funny thing is that when we got home and compared photos, almost every single club member that happened to walk down this street, had a shot from this very spot. :-)
Again, at a photo angle I was alone for, IAIS 6988 storms out from under Rt 6 near Victor, IA. Another shot high on my list.

Arriva The Shires Dennis Trident / Alexander 5432 - W432XKX arrives at Oxford City Centre bound for the Rail Station on route 280 from Aylesbury despite being branded for the 500 to Watford. This would have been covering for one of the 58 plate E400s dedicated to the route.

A drive along the spectacular Routes des Cretes on a gorgeous October day - only in a hire car Fiat 500 but one day hopefully in something a little sportier ! Cassis is just nestled around the headland - Vive la France !!
This is a section of the old Route 66 that still exists in Northern Arizona. Those old enough may recognize the "Burma Shave" signs. The large green art project also found on this road was added.
This vintage motel -still operating- is located in the small town or Seligman, Arizona, the birthplace of the Historic Route 66.
I don't do much colour at the moment but this just didn't work in B+W.
This is Route 101 running around the Olympic National Park in Washington. It's a stunning place.
Berkshire and Eastern Railroad train EDMO hustles Charlemont is it heads west on the B&E operated Pan Am Southern Freight Mainline, the one time Boston and Maine Fitchburg Division behind a Juniata rebuilt SD60E and a pair of Gevos. They are crossing MA 8A and paralleling West Hawley Road in the quaint little town best known for rafting in the Deerfield River and skiing on the flank of Mount Institute at Berkshire East whose barren slopes are visible in the upper right.
At left is the former Boston & Maine freight house standing between the tracks and the river at MP 407.4 as measured from Mattawamkeag, ME which was once the eastern most point on the Freight Main after then Guilford Transportation renumbered the mileposts after combining the Maine Central, Boston and Maine, and Delaware and Hudson Railroad's into a contiguous route from that obscure eastern point to the equally obscure western end of the line in Sunbury, PA.

"Ed's Camp is another roadside attraction that harkens back to the early days of Route 66. Ed originally came to the area as a miner in 1917 and it didn't take him long to realize that the real gold could be found catering to the needs of Route 66 travelers than slaving away in the mines. He established his camp around 1919 and business was so good he never got around to building a proper building, he just threw up a roof to provide some measure of protection from the hot desert sun. he put up the kactus kafe, a gas station, a "bathroom of sorts, and a few cabins. He also established sort of a campground and the remnants can be clearly seen from the road.
Today the camp is deserted, but the odd buildings survive to temp the artistic talents of modern photographers ~ from the road that is (see note below).

A Sunday only route - covering bits of other routes that didn't run on Sunday. Though a London route it ran entirely in Hertfordshire and Essex, between Flamstead End and Upshire. No red buses on these roads nowadays. Flamstead End, May 1974.

On my way from Las Vegas to the Grand Canyon I drove over the historic route 66. There I stopped on the Hackberry General Store in the middle of nowhere. A absolute cool place to feel the old american flair.

as far as your eyes can see...this is how far i must drive, going south. the road you see on the left is route 395...this highway is surrounded by scenic view left and right. this is one of the best scenic places in california i have ever seen...but this is winter time...most of the places are closed.
i just came from bodie- ghost town, up way north...going down the mountain i saw this wonderful view and wanted to share with you. (6 hours drive from L.A.)

Today was the grueling 26.2 mile run. People came from all over the world to run this marathon, however only one can win. Congratulations to Edurado Raphael Lencina from Tucuma Argentina, (I have looked at this place and its gorgeous) with time 2:34:10, I got to the finish line at 5:57:31, NO I did not run I just walked up to the finish line to get a photo and it was 5:57:31 a beautiful 62 degrees in Tulsa OK, good on you all that ran.
In the 1960s era a Hot Dog stand along the famous Route 66
