Silver Lake and Spirit Lake are located along the same stretch of highway, known as State Route 504 or Spirit Lake Highway. I originally posted this shot with the title Spirit Lake. This is actually Silver Lake.

Spirit Lake is much closer to Mount Saint Helens and figures prominently in the story of the Mount Saint Helens eruption. As a result of the pyroclastic material deposited by the eruption, the lake bed rose by over 200 feet and remains that way today. The lake is also much smaller in terms of water volume.

The little white blob, and its reflection, toward the left edge of the image, is Mount Saint Helens, minus its once perfect dome. A new dome has begun to emerge with recent volcanic activity, but it will be a long time before the mountain looks as it once did, if it ever does.

An entertaining telling of the events surrounding the eruption can be found in the movie St. Helens, starring, of all people, Art Carney (best known as Ed Norton on The Honeymooners) as Harry R. Truman, an 83-year-old lodge owner who refuses to leave the area and dies there.

A seventy-year old chapter in Berlin's transport history comes to an end just after midnight on 12 December 2021. BVG route 104's buses will change over to three new route numbers: M43 & 143/N43.

The changeover to a 24/7 Metrobusroute M43 over the busier eastern section of the route and the localisation of the western end with 143/N43, including the provison of a new Monday to Friday extension to the Planeterium at the Insulaner border of Schöneberg & Steglitz.

Seen in Bolton Street, Brixham on Friday 18th April is 15789, one of Stagecoach South West's large fleet of 20 ADL Enviro400-bodied Scania N230UBs which were bought to upgrade route 12 in 2012, although on this occasion it is actually working the 17.05 route 13 journey from South Devon College to Brixham. Unlike the 12 which operates via New Road in both directions, the 13 operates a one-way loop in Brixham via Monksbridge Road, Burton Street, Bolton Street and New Road; hence its approach from this direction. These buses are due to be replaced by new vehicles later this year, which will carry a two-tone red version of Stagecoach livery and carry "Hop 12" branding; and no doubt the Scanias will be cascaded for further service elsewhere in the Stagecoach empire.

Stagecoach route 13 was originally a local route between Brixham and Black Rock (South Devon College), but in May 2016 it was extended via Marldon to Newton Abbot to replace route 66; a 13b variant to Totnes was introduced at the the same time. Cutbacks in November 2016 saw the overall frequency reduced and the 13b, as well as the entire Saturday service, was withdrawn (a limited replacement service between Marldon and Totnes was provided by Devon County Council). More recently a limited Saturday service has been reinstated between Marldon and Newton Abbot from 8th April, supported by Devon County Council, in order to maintain a Saturday shopping link between Marldon and The Willows following the withdrawal of Local Link route 67 after 1st April.

--------------------

U.S. Route 66 (also known as the Will Rogers Highway after the humorist, and colloquially known as the "Main Street of America" or the "Mother Road") was a highway within the U.S. Highway System. One of the original U.S. highways, Route 66 was established on November 11, 1926 -- with road signs erected the following year. The highway, which became one of the most famous roads in America, originally ran from Chicago, Illinois, through Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and California, before ending at Los Angeles, covering a total of 2,448 miles (3,940 km). It was recognized in popular culture by both a hit song (written by Bobby Troup, originally recorded by the Nat King Cole Trio in 1946, and later performed by such artists as Chuck Berry, The Rolling Stones, The Manhattan Transfer and Depeche Mode) and the Route 66 television show in the 1960s.

Route 66 underwent many improvements and realignments over its lifetime, changing its path and overall length. Many of the realignments gave travelers faster or safer routes, or detoured around city congestion. One realignment moved the western endpoint farther west from downtown Los Angeles to Santa Monica.

Route 66 served as a major path for those who migrated west, especially during the Dust Bowl of the 1930s, and it supported the economies of the communities through which the road passed. People doing business along the route became prosperous due to the growing popularity of the highway, and those same people later fought to keep the highway alive in the face of the growing threat of being bypassed by the new Interstate Highway System.

U.S. 66 was officially removed from the United States Highway System on June 27, 1985 after it was decided the route was no longer relevant and had been replaced by the Interstate Highway System. Portions of the road that passed through Illinois, Missouri, New Mexico, and Arizona have been designated a National Scenic Byway of the name "Historic Route 66". It has begun to return to maps in this form. Some portions of the road in southern California have been redesignated "State Route 66", and others bear "Historic Route 66" signs and relevant historic information.

This was the night before our last day on Route 66. I envisioned a shot like this all along the route and I was happy that I was able to pick it up the last night. It is somewhere east of Barstow California.

I used the headlights from our car to light up the Route 66 emblem in the road and did some HDR and a little blending for one of my favorite shots from the trip.

Oct. 19, 2021: Stop in Holbrook, Arizona. Holbrook, Arizona, was founded in 1881 and gained famed as a classic wild west town. Called a town "too tough for women and churches," Holbrook in 1914 was the only county seat in the United States without a church. The early Mormon settlers had left. Many residents served with Theodore Roosevelt's Rough Riders in the 1898 Spanish-American War. Today the Route 66 community of 5,000 is known for petrified wood stores and dinosaur sculptures.
