Ross Rowland sits in the cab of his beloved C&O 614 on June 8th, 2025 shortly after the historic 4-8-4 arrived on the Strasburg Railroad's property at the Leaman Place interchange.

He came down to Strasburg to celebrate the sucessful move of the 614 and to present a cerimonial handoff to its new owner: RJD America.

Just a little over a month later on July 19th, 2025 Ross passed away following a brief battle with cancer.

High peaks surround Ross Lake in all directions, and include Hozomeen Mountain, Ruby Mountain, Desolation Peak, and Jack Mountain, the summit of which is over 7,000 feet above the elevation of the lake. The turquoise color of the water is due to the glacial runoff.

Requiem for a sweet little gull. Blown in from the Arctic to Northern California, dazzled a large bunch of birders and photographers for 3 days, and then taken by a Peregrine.

I was taking photos from a great distance, so I geared up to the 1000mm. Then off course the bird flew and was in short order nearly right in front of me. So I just kept tightening the aperture to drink in some detail.

Located at the heart of Edinburgh city in the beautiful setting of Princes Street Gardens is the Ross Fountain.

Sculpted by artist Jean-Baptiste Jules Klagmann, this fountain has been made from cast-iron at the iron foundry of Antoine Durenne in Sommevoire, France, a shining example of 19th century sculpture. If you take a closer look at the base of the fountain, there are mermaids, walrus and lion heads and cherubs. At the top are featured four female figures representing science, arts, poetry and industry.

In 1862, a local gun maker Mr Daniel Ross saw the fountain in London at the Great Exhibition and described it as "obtaining universal admiration". As a gift to Edinburgh city, in September 1869 Daniel Ross bought the sculpture for £2,000 and had the 122 pieces shipped to Leith where they would later be sent to Princes Street Gardens to be assembled. The fountain did not however meet with universal approval; Dean Ramsay (1793 - 1872), whose church was the adjacent St. John's Episcopal, described the fountain as "grossly indecent and disgusting".

Sunset over Ross Castle in Killarney, Ireland.

This exceptionally rare Arctic visitor was discovered on the Chicago Lakefront by the very sharp-eyed Dan Lory, who quickly got the word out to the Illinois birding community. Hundreds of happy birders from across the Midwest descended on this small beach next to the sit of a former steel mill where the bird proceeded to put on an amazing show for hours.

Ross Castle (Irish: Caisleán an Rois) is the ancestral home of the O'Donoghue clan. It is located on the edge of Lough Leane, in Killarney National Park, County Kerry, Ireland.

Ross Castle was built in the late 1400s by local ruling clan the O'Donoghues, though ownership changed hands during the Desmond Rebellion of the 1580s. The castle was amongst the last to surrender to Oliver Cromwell's Roundheads during the Irish Confederate Wars, and was only taken when artillery was brought by boat via the river lane.[1]

The castle is typical of strongholds of Irish chieftains built during the middle ages. The tower house had square bartizans on diagonally opposite corners and a thick end wall. The tower was originally surrounded by a square bawn defended by round corner towers on each end.[2]

There is a legend that O’Donoghue leaped or was sucked out of the window of the grand chamber at the top of the castle and disappeared into the waters of the lake along with his horse, his table and his library. It is said that O’Donoghue now lives in a great palace at the bottom of the lake where he keeps a close eye on everything that he sees.

It is possible to go on boat trips on the lake leaving from Ross Castle during the summer. Some of the smaller boats will allow you to visit Innisfallen Island on the lake during the summer. Ross Castle is located along the Ring of Kerry, a scenic driving route, and the Kerry Way, a similar hiking path.

My uncle, Ross Webb, a long time member of the Sydney YMCA Ramblers bushwalking club in the 1940s-1960s, formed the YMCA Hobnail Club in Sydney in the early 1960s or late 1950s. It was a club to encourage young people to take up bushwalking.

Photo probably taken at Yarramundi. He passed away in May 2007 in his late 80s.

This is the one! It's a gorgeous deep red, only just long enough and it fits. Yes, it fits perfectly everywhere. This has to be my Christmas present to myself.

Once again not much to report here. I had to sprint pretty far to get this one, other than that nothing worth adding. Apparently 4003 or one of the black ones was trailing. Cool.

She sat at her vanity gazing into her reflection while she practiced her line for the ball. She was the one who was selected to open the ball with a small speech. It wasn't a much of a surprise considering she had been a friend of the family for years. "Ladies and Gentlemen, tonight we.. No, too boring.." She tried again. "Ladies and Gentlemen, we shall dance and fea-!" She stopped herself abruptly. "No, too loud." Out of frustration, she slapped her hands against the vanity desk which made a few makeup things wobble in regaining of balance. "I have to do it perfect. I will be the perfect Charismatic Cybernetic Crow for the ball!" She said to her reflection.

Ross, Tasmania.

This was part of our diversion from the Pacific Crest Trail to avoid going near the Cedar Creek Fire. I remember reading a description of the Ross Lake hike in the famous Manning and Spring guidebooks about twenty years ago, when I first moved to Washington. The three things I remembered from the description were (1) that the lake was named for the head of Seattle City Light (2) that there was an option to take a boat in one direction and (3) that you could expect hoards of mosquitos at a certain time of the year. Evidently, we were there at that certain time of year. I'd have preferred to follow the more remote and rugged North Cascades route, but this was plenty scenic, and it also allowed us to chance upon a pine marten. Ross was being camera shy so I had to snipe him through the window.
