Rhodostethia rosea.
Radipole Lake, Dorset.
It was almost exactly 10 years ago that I saw my last Ross's Gull in the UK, so the arrival of this winter plumaged adult, was an obvious attraction. It had been quite mobile, and could appear at any one of three or four sites, but Radipole offered the best possibility of getting reasonably close to this high arctic species.
Despite the very cold conditions, it was a lovely sunny day, and the temperature was soon forgotten when the star bird appeared.
Colorado Springs, CO - My most recent trip out to find migrating birds netted a few Ross's Geese mixed in with hundreds of the much larger Canada Geese. I liked the way their white feathers contrasted with the dark water. Here a single goose floats casually across the icy pond ...
Ross-on-Wye is a small market town in southeastern Herefordshire, England, located on the River Wye, and on the northern edge of the Forest of Dean. The 700 year old parish church of St. Mary's is the town's most prominent landmark - as seen here - and its tall pointed spire is visible when approaching the town from all directions.

The tide was well out and there was a very good sea smell at the old slipway in Plockton. I am glad I made the effort to visit Plockton before commencing my walk to Duncraig. It was great to see some snow on the distant mountains

I had such fun making up these samples for Heather Ross and the Martha Stewart show. Be sure to watch on Monday - Heather will be on the live show demonstrating how to make these bloomers! Blogged here.
So I wonder how it works ... does Ross tuck his underwear down into his pants? Sock-to-underwear suspenders? Does he put the package over the underwear spandex waist to make the underwear sit lower? Will we ever know?

... on sunday (11/17), when this pic was taken, reports of an impending 'bomb cyclone' weather system hit the news cycle ... the seaside is the best way to see & feel the wind and rain so there I was on a sunday afternoon, before the storm ... it had rained overnight but the sea was quite normal for this time of year. With this series of pix I experiment with the x-t30ii's film simulations, in this case the classic chrome
The last day of April 2025 and another trip to WWT Slimbridge in Gloucestershire.
This was a surprise arrival, A wild Ross's Goose Flew in to land on the Tack Piece Lagoon.
This is a rare Goose and is the first time I have seen a wild/escaped Ross's Goose. It was wearing a Davic Ring, ID U09.
The Ross’s Goose is similar to the Snow Goose in appearance except it is much smaller and has a more rounded head. It is similar in appearance to a white-phase snow goose, but about 40% smaller.
The Ross's Goose is the smallest of the three white geese that breed in North America.
719 heads an unidentified tank train eastbound through Melton Ross. The railways were far more interesting before the GM invasion! 12th October 1995!
These Ross's Geese frequently stay together on the shore, but I haven't seen them swimming together before.
From 'Wikipedia': The Ross's Goose (Chen rossii or Anser rossii) is a North American species of goose.
This goose breeds in northern Canada, mainly in the Queen Maud Gulf Bird Sanctuary, and winters much further south in the continent in the southern USA and occasionally northern Mexico.
The plumage of this species is white except for black wing tips. It is similar in appearance to a white-phase Snow Goose but approximately 40% smaller. Other differences from the Snow Goose are that Ross's bill is smaller in proportion to its body and lacks "black lips". One further difference is that the male has distinctive warts (caruncles) at the base of its beak.

American film star Joan Crawford (1904-1977) had a career that would span many decades, studios, and controversies. In her silent films, she made an impact as a vivacious Jazz Age flapper and later she matured into a star of psychological melodramas.
