Butterfly - Limenitis arthemis - The wings were There were tinges of brown on the outside top of each wing. Each wing was edged in black and white. The abdomen of the butterfly was fuzzy and black, with a few thin brown stripes on it. It had two black antennae. This butterfly was on a rock wall, near flower gardens, at a rest area along Interstate 81 in Virginia.

A portion of one of the walls inside of the Missouri Welcome Center rest area located on I-44 near Joplin.
Heading home to Oakland from Southern California very late at night, I encountered heavy rains on and off beginning just pass Pasadena. The worst was going across the Grapevine on Highway 5 where the rain turned to sleet and by the time, I reached the Buttonwillow Rest Area, I was exhausted and needed a break. Shortly after a two-hour nap, the rain ceased; a full moon peeked through the clouds; and I stepped into a shockingly attractive environment with trees made extra green while streets, structures and vending machines had been scrubbed clean — thanks to record rains in California.

A Burger King along the A2 highway in Beesd. This restaurant is located on a Southbound rest area with Esso gas station with a Spar convenience store. Opened in March 2020 in the beginning of the covid crisis. Featuring a drive thru at the other side of the building. As we speak (*June 2023) there are about 70 Burger King restaurants in the Netherlands.

Taken in 2004.
Heart of the Dunes, a rest area and Nature Center near the end of Dunes Drive in White Sands National Monument (now National Park) in New Mexico. This is where the longer trails and excursions into the dunes begin.
Shot at the eastbound Ehrenberg Rest Area on Interstate 10 in Arizona. Three hours later we were in Maricopa, Arizona, the end of a long drive from Washington state.
About half-way from downtown to Dow's Lake you'll find this lovely rest area, complete with restrooms, changing booths, libations, and an outdoor wood fire. Note all the patrons at this moment are in skates...
FYI, the pink coat was toned down substantially by me. The original finished image was overwhelmed by it. (Maybe I should have just filled it in with blue...!)
I've been hanging on to this set of pictures for a while. Last year, while still living in California, I pulled of westbound Interstate 80 at the rest stop just north of Vallejo. From the highway, the view that the rest stop affords is not apparent. However, I was pleasantly surprised by the vistas. Many of the travelers and groups who had stopped there were also taking pictures… so I was not alone.
The sunlight was fading fast and I found myself wanting for a tripod. This shot focuses on the trellis or open woodwork that framed an area for visitors to stand beneath while taking in the view. Some of the attractions of the Six Flags Discovery Kingdom, which is a 135 acre park, were highlighted by the low angle light . The San Pablo Bay as well as Mount Tam are prominent in the distance.
