Irises are my favorite flower.

I was stunned when I saw these irises blooming at a Virginia rest area on I-81 in late November.

The garden was dedicated by the South Carolina Department of Transportation as a memorial to the September 11 terrorist attacks.

ENGLISH:

The motorway rest area is very busy this evening. Drivers from all over have placed their vehicles neatly to spend the night. It seems that the truckers have already eaten because some of the waste bins are very full.

A highway police patrol has shown there presence. During the night it will increasingly check the rest areas.

Moss Cove Rest Area, Willits, California 2015

While driving home to Virginia from New Mexico, we stopped at the Oklahoma Welcome Center near Erick, OK.

I thought the welcome sign being a colorful T-Rex was kind of interesting.

I saw these gorgeous Celosia at a rest area in Ohio on State Route 35. The sun was just right to capture their vibrancy.

The flower is also known as cockscomb or woolflowers.

They are recognized by their flame-like flower heads.

Ohio does a great job decorating their rest areas!

Emery County, UT – This is near Ghost Rock off Interstate 70. Ghost Rock isn’t a town it is literally a rock. It sounds more like an oxymoron than a place of interest.

Interstate 70 is at times a mental challenge to drive. There are areas several miles long without an exit, one stretch spans 110 miles. Driving these stretches it’s difficult not to have that feeling of “I really hope the car doesn’t break.” When the Interstates were built most of them paralleled existing highways. However I-70 didn’t parallel any existing road. This is why there are so many long sections without towns or exits.

According to Utah this is call the “Salt Wash View Area”. It has a mundane name for such a spectacular view. I would have named this place, “Check Your Shorts”.

While stopping at a rest area in Ohio, I noticed the flooded picnic area from all of the rain and snow melt we have been having lately caused the small river nearby to overflow its banks. I liked how the snow from the night before was clinging to the trees too. I don't think anyone will be eating among these trees for some time though.

I also noticed a very curious sound of many birds squawking in some trees next to the river. Then after getting back in the car I found out the reason why. There were about a dozen cats behind a fenced in area where they stored equipment and dumpsters.

One half of the The Robert Russin sculpture grouping, "The Greeting and The Gift", which was commemorated on behalf of Wyomings participation of the United States Bicentennial Celebration. Dedicated on January 30, 1977.

This two piece grouping is present at the Wyoming Visitors Center located south of Cheyenne on I-25.

Per the inscription:

"The scene depicts a typical meeting of the Indian and the Mountain Man on the open plains of Wyoming during the time of western discovery and exploration in the early 1800's.

At such meetings offerings of friendship would take place. The Indian is holding out a ceremonial buffalo horn filled with Rocky Mountain "sweetwater".

While the Mountain Man brings several beaver skins stretched on rounds of Aspen branches. Note that the Mountain Man holds his Muzzle loading "long rifle" well away from his body with his hand over the muzzle to assure that it is harmless."

After leaving Vallejo, California Thursday evening to begin our three-day maraton drive to Illinois, my son and I pulled in to a rest stop around 4:00 a.m. the next morning and tried to sleep in our cars. He was driving a four door sedan while I was driving a Corvette... and I found that trying to sleep in a bucket seats that doesn't recline to be difficult. After sleeping only an hour, I woke up and realized that the sun was beginning to rise. There was an awesome cloud layer overhead and we were surrounded by some incredible scenery. I pulled out the tripod and camera and spent an hour taking shots before we headed out on the highway again. Because of the time pressure we were under, this turned out to be the only time on our 2300 mile trip that I took time to take pictures.

I'm not sure where this was taken. I asked a custodian where we were at and he simply said, "Fenner." I can't find it on the map. The rest stop was on Interstate 40 somewhere near the border of Arizona and New Mexico, but whether it was in one state or the other I do not know.

The following night, we again got only an hour or two of sleep. We had driven through sand storms and rain storms... desperately hoping to keep ahead of the snow. The wide tires on the Corvette simply cannot cope wiht it. When I pulled the Corvette into the metal shed at our new place about ten miles away from Macomb, IL, it began to snow!

That was late Saturday night. We unloaded the cars and then I drove my son up to Moline, IL (about an hour and a half trip) so that he could catch his return flight home. On the way, I fell asleep for a split second... just as we were passing a car headed in the opposite direction. That scared me so much that I woke him up and asked him to keep me awake--but he was just as tired as I was. After dropping him off at the airport, I decided to stay in Moline and got four hours of sleep before driving back to Macomb. I'm still not caught up on sleep but I'm grateful to my God that I'm still alive!

Thanks to all those who have asked about my new job. My first few days have been wonderful. I'm in charge of a large, incredibly talented IT staff and I have some wonderful help. I've met a lot of new friends both at the University and in the community.

Botanical Garden is located in the centre of Copenhagen. The garden covers an area of 10 hectares and is particularly noted for its extensive complex of historical glasshouses dating from 1874. The garden is open for the public.

The Botanical Garden was first established in 1600 but it was moved twice before it was ultimately given its current location in 1870.

The garden contains more than 13,000 species and is arranged in different sections including: Danish plants (600 species), perennial plants (1,100 species), annual plants (1,100 species), rock gardens with plants from mountaineous areas in Central and Southern Europe and Conifer Hill which is planted with coniferous trees. One of the newest inclusions is a rhododendron garden

29 June 2018, the Botanical Garden opens its new Butterfly House, which will be open during the summer season. Here, visitors can explore the butterflies’ fascinating life and transformation at close hand

Heading home to Oakland from Southern California very late at night, I encountered heavy rains on and off beginning just pass Pasadena. The worst was going across the Grapevine on Highway 5 where the rain turned to sleet and by the time, I reached the Buttonwillow Rest Area, I was exhausted and needed a break. Shortly after a two-hour nap, the rain ceased; a full moon peeked through the clouds; and I stepped into a shockingly attractive environment with trees made extra green while streets, structures and vending machines had been scrubbed clean — thanks to record rains in California.
