My Grandfather, J. Bruce Day bought a second hand Beaver Hall roll-top desk while employed as a teacher, principal, inspector or superintendent for the Manitoba School Board somewhere around Flinflon, or Dauphin, back about 1920 or 1930. He was a well-respected educator who studied and achieved his B.A. and Masters, all the while working and devoting his life to education. An illness overwhelmed Grandpa Day during the summer of 1955, taking him from his family at the age of fifty-three.

There's not much more than this I can tell you as he died before I was born and my mother was unable to relate the facts without the aide of the unbreakable Alzheimer’s code. One can only imagine the hours my grandfather spent studying at the roll-top desk. Over the years this once modern piece of furniture transformed into a neglected antique. If the desk could speak, the path it traveled would have made an intriguing story that would include many homes and families, moving vans and U-hauls - over highways and freeways, covering at least six provinces, as many states and many more marriages and divorces - a few of them mine.

The roll-top and I had survived the 7.3 earthquake in 'Frisco back in 1989 and now, survived the fallout from divorce in 1991. The tough oak desk and I hit the road again.

The roll-top had never looked more aerodynamic, mounted on the roof of the pickup truck, loaded like a surfers rendition of the Beverly Hillbilly's, towing my Alfa Romeo Spider, adorned with my surfboard. A showy and defiant exit from Santa Barbara for one who'd been Californicated and wished to part the seas of failure with style – a desperate display of a salvaged but soggy pride.

The parade float crossed the border with the lone California surfer being granted a reprieve from customs – in spite of only providing bleached hair and a suntan for credentials to the sympathetic all female staff guarding this final exit across the American out-of-bounds line. Unable to locate any ownership or insurance documents, the kind and pretty women posing as customs agents provided me with all the paper work that permitted re-entry into Canada with all of my American acquired possessions.

The herniated and clutchless pickup limped across the border, delivering the now expatriate surf guy and his roll-top desk to their new home, Vancouver, British Columbia. Of course it was raining and my reprieve from the elements fell through. My first ex-wife reneged on her promise of shelter from the storm and forced me to live one more night under the cover of my surfboard and the leaky canvas roof of my Alfa Romeo Spider.

Huddled in my sleeping bag with my knees crammed under the steering wheel and my feet contorted between the clutch, brake and gas pedals, I tangled with mixed feelings over my Canadian repatriation and the countless other opportunities I turned my back on south of the border. The roll-top sat atop the pickup wondering where the hell it was, and was going, while worrying about the coastal downpours effect upon its complexion, and if it would ever see its approaching 100th birthday...

This is the Penn-Wyatt House (sometimes called the Hoffman House) on Millionaire’s Row in Danville, Virginia, originally built by James Gabriel Penn in 1876; it underwent various modifications, 1887-1903. Penn was a tobacco commission merchant. He died in 1907, but his widow ultimately couldn’t afford to maintain the house. in 1934 it was sold at public auction to Landon R. Wyatt and then sold again in 1977 to Dr. Allan A Hoffman. In 2012 it was owned by “the bank” and was for sale—the purchase price I was told was $250,000. Much work on the exterior and interior had been done, presumably more than the 2012 selling price. I don’t know its current status. It’s an eclectic Victorian structure with the monumentality of the Second Empire and the detailing of the Italianate style. It is brick, covered with scored stucco; it has a mansard roof tower and multi-gable roofs. There are at least 25 rooms with many stained glass windows, displaying a wide range of styles used for domestic architecture (as opposed to ecclesiastical and commercial). The following images show some of the domestic stained-glass in this home—thee domestic use of stained-glass is always dealt with separately from the structure in these photos.

Three main divisions articulate the front façade, all separated by a system of quoining. Aesthetically it offers up a raised contrasts with the smooth stucco surfaces. To the left is a 2-story bay window with a parapeted roof with wrought-iron cresting and a tripartite rounded-arch window in the heavily bracketed attic gable. 1/1 hung sash windows are used throughout this bay projection. Also characteristic of windows throughout the home (except for the back portion) are the rounded-arch hood molds. The entrance tower is centrally positioned and separated from the sections to both right and left by prominent use of quoins. The entry is a double door with leaded glass in a geometric abstract design, a leaded glass transom and long single pane sidelights, each with an understated recessed panel at the base. The second level of the tower displays a pair of leaded stained-glass windows with a single round arch hood mold. The third story has a set of 1/1 hung sash windows with the ever-present hood molds. Above that is a single small circular window with hood mold. The tower roof is bell-cast mansard and is capped with cresting. The third division of the front façade is accentuated by the quoining. The door from the porch to the interior in this section is a large Colonial Revival entry with a large fanlight with sunburst design and a rounded-arch hood mold over all. The sidelights are less elaborate than the primary entrance but are unusually wide leaded glass. The second-story in this façade-division has a pair of 1/1 hung sash windows with a single round-arch hood mold. The 3rd level, with the major exception of no bay roof is similar to the gable are on the left. The roof of the house is slate and consists of shingles of different colors and shapes. The wraparound porch is supported by wooden Ionic columns on a stone plinth railing, the stone balusters being carved. The pedimented entrance has low-relief carving in the tympanum. The pediment itself is bracketed but not with the dominant design used throughout much of the building; a row of dentils below the pedimented roof brackets is a nice ornamental detail. The porch itself has a couple of tile patterns—one just at the front entry and the other at a porch entrance to the right side. In front of this porch section is a two-tiered circular detached porch with red shingles on the conical roof and with a wrought-iron finial. The house is impressive; the angularity of gables is counterbalanced by the circular detached porch and the rounded roof line of the porch roof; the upper level is fascinating with the dark-striped brackets and the large quantity of cresting on the roof. And all parts seem to cohesively form an aesthetic whole. Now that I’ve worked up a description, there are architectural elements I unfortunately overlooked when I photographed the structure in September 2011. The Penn-Wyatt House is within the boundary of the Danville Historic District, but it was listed individually on the Nation Register of Historic Places September 7, 1979 ID number 79003317

This is a photograph from the 30th Annual AXA Raheny 5 Mile Road Race 2014 took place in Raheny Village, Dublin, Ireland on Sunday January 26th 2014 at 15:00. The 'Raheny 5' has become one of the most famous road races in Ireland. The race has continued to grow year-on-year and this year was no exception on the year of it's 30th Anniversary. Almost 3,000 participants took part in the various events of the day. The incredible voluntary organisational work carried out by Raheny Shamrocks and the local community in staging the race every year must be acknowledged.

The weather was postively wintery today. There was an icy wind blowing into the face of the runners at various points in the course. This made for some very variable mile-splits. Overall the weather was favourable in that the rain stayed away and there was some helpful 'wind at the back' for the runners in places.

The race route starts at All Saints Park and goes into Raheny Village via Watermill Road. The route then turns west and along the Howth Road before turning left onto Sybill Hill Road. The route then turns left again onto Mount Prospect Avenue and continues until you run down to the sea-front and the Clontarf Road. The only real hill in the course is at the left turn from Clontarf Road onto Watermill Road. Finally, at the North East end of St. Anne's Park the race turns left and makes it way to the finish which is positioned at the start area of the race.

Very often we have actually ran in the same race and then switched to photographer mode after we finished the race. Consequently, we feel that we have no obligations to capture a photograph of every participant in the race. However, we do try our very best to capture as many participants as possible. But this is sometimes not possible for a variety of reasons:

     ►You were hidden behind another participant as you passed our camera

     ►Weather or lighting conditions meant that we had some photographs with blurry content which we did not upload to our Flickr set

     ►There were too many people - some races attract thousands of participants and as amateur photographs we cannot hope to capture photographs of everyone

     ►We simply missed you - sorry about that - we did our best!

You can email us petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com to enquire if we have a photograph of you which didn't make the final Flickr selection for the race. But we cannot promise that there will be photograph there. C’est pour ces raisons que, à partir de 1954, le Ministre à la Reconstruction et au Logement évalue le besoin en logements à 2.000.660, devenant ainsi une priorité nationale. Quelques années plus tard à l’appel de l’Abbé Pierre, le journaliste Gilbert Mathieu, en avril 1957 publiait dans le quotidien Le Monde une série d’articles sur la situation dramatique du logement : Logement, notre honte et dénonçant le nombre réduit de logements et leur impitoyable état. Robert Doisneau, Banlieue après-guerre, 1943-1949 /Le mandat se veut triple : reconstruire le parc immobilier détruit durant les bombardements essentiellement du printemps/été 1944, faire face à l’essor démographique et enfin résorber l’habitat insalubre notamment les bidonvilles et les cités de transit. La double nécessité de construire davantage et vite, est en partie la cause de la forme architecturale excentrique qui constituera les Grands Ensembles dans les banlieues françaises. Cinq caractéristiques permettent de mieux comprendre ce terme : la rupture avec le tissu urbain ancien, un minimum de mille logements, une forme collective (tours, barres) de quatre jusqu’à vingt niveaux, la conception d’appartements aménagés et équipés et enfin une gestion destinée pour la plupart à des bailleurs de logement social.

Pour la banlieue parisienne leur localisation s’est opérée majoritairement dans la périphérie, tandis que dans les autres cas, plus de la moitié a été construite dans le centre ville, le plus souvent à la limite des anciens faubourgs.

C’est le triomphe de l’urbanisme fonctionnel et rationaliste cher à Le Corbusier. Entre 1958 et 1973, cent quatre-vingt-quinze Zones à Urbaniser en Priorité (ZUP) sont créées, comprenant deux millions de logements, essentiellement de type populaire en Habitations à Loyer Modéré (HLM), mais pas exclusivement, remplaçant ainsi les anciennes Habitations à Bon Marché (HBM) crées en 1894. Selon le décret du 27 mars 1954 qui en fixe les conditions d’attribution, les bénéficiaires de la législation n’ont pas changé, ce sont toujours des « personnes peu fortunées vivant principalement de leur salaire », selon la loi Strauss de 1906. En 1953, tous les HLM voient leur surface maximale se réduire, en passant de 71 à 65 mètres carrés pour un quatre pièces. L’accès au logement des familles modestes se fera donc au détriment de la qualité et quantité de l’espace habité pour des familles nombreuses. À ce propos, le sociologue Thierry Oblet a bien montré comment se sont articulées les pensées des architectes et des ingénieurs modernistes, avec leur souci planificateur d’un État interventionniste[8] grâce à l’hégémonie du béton, de la ligne droite et de la standardisation de la construction.Les exemples de cette architecture restent nombreux : de la Cité de 4000 (pour 4000 logements) à la Courneuve en Seine-Saint-Denis (93) aux logements de 15 étages aux balcons pétales, appelés « Chou-fleur » à Créteil en Val-de Marne (94) dessinés au début des années 70 par l’architecte Gérard Grandval. De la Cité des nuages à Nanterre dans les Hauts-de-Seine (92) à la Grande borne construite entre 1967 et 1971 sur le territoire des communes de Grigny et Viry-Châtillon, dans l’Essonne (91) en passant par la Noé à Chanteloup-les-Vignes dans le département des Yvelines (78) scénario du célèbre film La Haine[9] de Kassovits.

Récemment, plusieurs expositions photographiques se sontconcentrées sur cette nouvelle figure de l’urbanisme fonctionnaliste français de l’après-guerre. Par exemple Toit&Moi, 100 ans de logement social (2012), Les Grands ensembles 1960-2010 (2012) produite par l’école supérieure d’arts & médias de Caen/Cherbourg, selon un projet du Ministère de la Culture et de la Communication. Enfin l’exposition Photographie à l’œuvre, (2011-2012) d’Henri Salesse, photographe du service de l’inventaire du Ministère de la Reconstruction et de l’Urbanisme et Voyage en périphérie (2012) de Cyrus Cornut.

Il s’agissait là non seulement d’un progrès matériel, mais aussi démocratique, donnant ainsi à chaque citoyen, la possibilité d’accéder à son petit appartement doté de tous les conforts de l’époque. La recherche d’économie et de rapidité dans la conduite des chantiers portent à l’utilisation du béton comme matériel privilégié et à des plans architecturaux aussi simples que possible avec la réalisation de logements standardisés, dont les barres et les tours deviennent les figures principales : Au mitan des années cinquante, apparurent d’étranges formes urbaines. Des immeubles d’habitation de plus en plus longs et de plus en plus hauts, assemblés en blocs qui ne s’intégraient pas aux villes existantes. Ces blocs s’en différenciaient ostensiblement et parfois comme systématiquement, s’en isolaient. Ils semblaient faire ville à part. Surtout ils ne ressemblaient pas à ce qu’on avait l’habitude d’appeler ville. Et leur architecture aussi, qui était tellement déroutante. On les a nommés » grands ensembles. Bref, entre 1946 et 1975 le parc immobilier français passe de 12,7 millions à 21 millions de logements. Environ 8 millions de ceux-ci sont neufs, construits entre 1953-1975 – dont la moitié sous forme de grands ensembles – et près de 80 % des logements grâce à une aide de l’État avec des crédits publics. Le nombre de logements sociaux passe de moins de 500.000 à près de 3 millions, dont 43 % en région parisienne, où la demande est la plus forte[11]. Ce qui témoigne d’un effort énorme. Alors que l’hiver 1954 est particulièrement rigoureux, l’abbé Pierre lance un appel en faveur des sans-logis et déshérités et organise des collectes de vêtements et de nourriture pour les plus démunis. Cela nous rappelle également que les inégalités sociales restaient particulièrement importantes à l’époque, malgré les débuts de la croissance économique, et que la crise du logement n’était pas encore complètement résolue. Paradoxalement, le terme de grands ensembles s’officialise donc au moment même où ils son mis en question. ZUP est un acronyme qui signifie Zone à Urbaniser en Priorité. Elles ont été créées par le décret N°58-1464 du 31 décembre 1958, afin de planifier et d’encadrer sur le territoire national, le développement urbain pour répondre à la carence de logements face à l’accroissement démographique et favoriser enfin la résorption de l’habitat insalubre. Remembrance Sunday, 8 November 2015

In the United Kingdom, Remembrance Sunday is held on the second Sunday in November, which is the Sunday nearest to 11 November, Armistice Day, the anniversary of the end of hostilities in the First World War at 11 a.m. on 11 November 1918. Remembrance Sunday is held to commemorate the contribution of British and Commonwealth military and civilian servicemen and women in the two World Wars and later conflicts.

Remembrance Sunday is marked by ceremonies at local war memorials in most cities, towns and villages, attended by civic dignitaries, ex-servicemen and -women, members of local armed forces regular and reserve units, military cadet forces and uniformed youth organisations. Two minutes’ silence is observed at 11 a.m. and wreaths of remembrance poppies are then laid on the memorials.

The United Kingdom national ceremony is held in London at the Cenotaph in Whitehall. Wreaths are laid by Queen Elizabeth II, principal members of the Royal Family normally including the Duke of Edinburgh, the Prince of Wales, the Duke of Cambridge, the Duke of York, the Princess Royal, the Earl of Wessex and the Duke of Kent, the Prime Minister, leaders of the other major political parties, the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, Commonwealth High Commissioners and representatives from the Royal Navy, Army and Royal Air Force, the Merchant Navy and Fishing Fleets and the civilian services, and veterans’ groups. Two minutes' silence is held at 11 a.m., before the laying of the wreaths. This silence is marked by the firing of a field gun on Horse Guards Parade to begin and end the silence, followed by Royal Marines buglers sounding Last Post.

The parade consists mainly of an extensive march past by veterans, with military bands playing music following the list of the Traditional Music of Remembrance.

Other members of the British Royal Family watch from the balcony of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.

After the ceremony, a parade of veterans and other related groups, organised by the Royal British Legion, marches past the Cenotaph, each section of which lays a wreath as it passes. Only ticketed participants can take part in the march past.

From 1919 until the Second World War remembrance observance was always marked on 11 November itself. It was then moved to Remembrance Sunday, but since the 50th anniversary of the end of the Second World War in 1995, it has become usual to hold ceremonies on both Armistice Day and Remembrance Sunday.

Other pieces of music are then played during the march past and wreath laying by veterans, starting with Trumpet Voluntary and followed by It's A Long Way To Tipperary, the marching song of the Connaught Rangers, a famous British Army Irish Regiment of long ago.

The following is complied from press reports on 8 November 2015:

"The nation paid silent respect to the country's war dead today in a Remembrance Sunday service. Leading the nation in remembrance, as ever, was the Queen, who first laid a wreath at the Cenotaph in 1945 and has done so every year since, except on the four occasions when she was overseas.

Dressed in her customary all-black ensemble with a clutch of scarlet poppies pinned against her left shoulder, she stepped forward following the end of the two-minute silence marked by the sounding of Last Post by 10 Royal Marine buglers.

The Queen laid her wreath at the foot of the Sir Edwin Lutyens Portland stone monument to the Glorious Dead, then stood with her head momentarily bowed.

She was joined by King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands, who was invited to the Cenotaph for the first time to lay a wreath marking the 70th anniversary of the liberation of the Netherlands by British troops.

Watched by his wife Queen Maxima, who stood next to the Duchess of Cambridge in the Royal Box, the King laid a wreath marked with the simple message, 'In remembrance of the British men and women who gave their lives for our future.'

Wreaths were then laid by members of the Royal Family, all wearing military uniform: Prince Philip; then Prince Andrew, Prince Harry and Prince William at the same time ; then Prince Edward, Princess Anne and the Duke of Kent at the same time.

Three members of the Royal Family laying wreaths at the same time was an innovation in 2015 designed to slightly reduce the amount of time of the ceremony and thereby reduce the time that the Queen had to be standing.

Prince Charles attended a remembrance service in New Zealand.

The Prime Minister then laid a wreath. The Leader of the Opposition and Leader of the Labour Party, Jeremy Corbyn, appeared at the Cenotaph for the first time. He wore both a suit and a red poppy for the occasion.

His bow as he laid a wreath marked with the words 'let us resolve to create a world of peace' was imperceptible – and not enough for some critics. Yet unlike the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Battle service earlier this year, Mr Corbyn did join in with the singing of the national anthem.

Following the end of the official service at the Cenotaph, a mammoth column more than 10,000-strong (some 9,000 of whom were veterans) began marching along Whitehall, saluting the Cenotaph as they passed, Parliament Street, Great George Street, Horse Guards Road and back to Horse Guard Parade. The Duke of Cambridge took the salute from the column on Horse Guards Parade.

Time takes its inevitable toll on even the most stoic among us, and this year only a dozen World War Two veterans marched with the Spirit of Normandy Trust, a year after the Normandy Veterans' Association disbanded.

Within their ranks was 95-year-old former Sapper Don Sheppard of the Royal Engineers. Sheppard was of the eldest on parade and was pushed in his wheelchair by his 19-year-old grandson, Sam who, in between studying at Queen Mary University, volunteers with the Normandy veterans.

'It is because of my admiration for them,' he says. 'I see them as role models and just have the utmost respect for what they did.'

While some had blankets covering their legs against the grey November day, other veterans of more recent wars had only stumps to show for their service to this country during 13 long years of war in Afghanistan.

As well as that terrible toll of personal sacrifice, the collective losses – and triumphs - of some of the country’s most historic regiments were also honoured yesterday.

The Gurkha Brigade Association - marking 200 years of service in the British Army – marched to warm ripples of applause. The King’s Royal Hussars, represented yesterday by 126 veterans, this year also celebrate 300 years since the regiment was raised.

They were led by General Sir Richard Shirreff, former Deputy Supreme Allied Commander of Nato and Colonel of the regiment who himself was marching for the first time.

'We are joined by a golden thread to all those generations who have gone before us,” he said. “We are who we are, because of those that have gone before us.' "

Day 62 - First 90 Days with My D90**playing catch up again**

A doorway on my street that is often used as a public restroom. It's absolutely horrible and there are no words to describe the smell. In fact, I make it a point to hold my breath every time I turn down my street.

The sign says:

"Please!!! Have respect for where we live!!!!! Stop fucking pissing HERE!!!!"

It doesn't work. Thankfully my apartment is far enough down the street that it doesn't come in through the windows.

In the midst of all the chaos in the world, there is celebration to be had.

Today, we celebrated the son of some of our good friends. He turned 5 today. Kevin and I love this little guy. He smart, creative and such a joy to be around. It's been a blessing to be part of his life. The party definitely lifted a lot of our spirits.

I got many lovely photos of the kids, but out of respect for them and their parents, I'm not going to involve any photos of them in this project. Just know that they're all super cute and hilarious. :)
