Just got back from yet another trip to the Lake District. Not many photos taken due to inclement weather (putting it mildly) but here's one from April last year. I must have found a handy rock as this is in high resolution mode.

On the higher mountains the first snow has fallen, but here around this meander of river the last colors of autumn are resisting. I think it deserved a photo.

Blue Jay. Just testing out the new Super Resolution Enhancement feature in Lightroom.
Beware though of the huge file sizes as it creates a new dng file that is close to 350MB in size. And if you edit it in Photoshop, that will return another huge file, a tiff file of around 350MB in size too.
The original files were 6,000 X 4,000 and after the super resolution treatment they were 12,000 X 8,000, so cropping is necessary unless you're making a really big print and want the whole image to be printed.

I did some Postprocessing to eliminate the Blur in the Water and to delete the movement of the people.

At the end of a long walk at Box Hill, Surrey I noticed some great light and colours in the trees just up the hill from the car park. There was not enough light to shoot handheld and capture the
scene reliably. Luckily I had a mini-tripod.

Happy New Year to you all!
2023 was not a great year for me and I am sad to report that it has been 8 months since I even picked up my camera. It hardly ever left my side before, like an extension of my own eyes, but PTSD swallowed me whole and I had lost all inspiration.
My New Year's Resolution, to myself, is to make friends with my camera once again. I don't know what direction that will take other than I want to get to know her again and put her to use doing what Canon intended.
Your support through such a difficult year has been a real lifeline and I do not say so lightly. Thank you all so very much, from the depths of my heart, and I hope that I can eventually repay you all with new work to share.
My warmest wishes to you for 2024 my Flickr friends. The world has gone completely crazy and looks set to continue on that path but know that I will be there with you. Sharing my photography and, more importantly, enjoying the work and words that you share and letting you know that I am thrilled to be on that journey with you.

Eucalyptus deglupta is a species of tall tree, commonly known as the rainbow eucalyptus, Mindanao gum, or rainbow gum that is native to the Philippines, Indonesia and Papua New Guinea. It is the only Eucalyptus species that usually lives in rainforest, with a natural range that extends into the Northern Hemisphere. It is characterized by multi-coloured bark.
Eucalyptus deglupta is a fast-growing tree that typically reaches a height of 60–78 m (197–256 ft) with the trunk up to 240 cm (94 in) in diameter and with buttresses up to 4 m (13 ft) high. It has smooth, orange-tinted bark that sheds in strips, revealing streaks of pale green, red, orange, grey, and purplish brown.

I uploaded this one high resolution so you can see the climber on the top. They had a harrowing climb, and were very late to be on the summit, perfect for me, as I was shooting sunset, but not so great to be lining down in the pitch dark with a headlamp from the top of Prusik Peak, which is a no joke rock wall. They were lucky to have a calm weather window here in the late fall. So was I... the picture is actually a little better zoomed out, but then it's nearly impossible to see the climbers on the summit, which to me is just special.
Tonight there were glorious clouds, where the moon was looking through the clouds sometimes. So it had to be a nightscape over Skellefteå.

I couldn't help but throw in a little pareidolia, courtesy of the two resolution charts, the centerpoint marker, and the black box used as an aid in detecting travel ghost (streaking that occurs when the shutter is improperly timed with the intermittent movement or damaged, or as a result of mechanical wear).

Mount Rainier is the highest mountain of the Cascade Range of the Pacific Northwest, and the highest mountain in the state of Washington. It is a large active stratovolcano located 54 miles (87 km) southeast of Seattle. It is the most topographically prominent mountain in the contiguous United States and the Cascade Volcanic Arc, with a summit elevation of 14,411 ft (4,392 m). Mt. Rainier is considered one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world, and it is on the Decade Volcano list. Because of its large amount of glacial ice, Mt. Rainier could potentially produce massive lahars that could threaten the entire Puyallup River valley.
Mount Rainier was first known by the Native Americans as Talol, or Tacoma or Tahoma, from the Lushootseed word [təqʷúʔbəʔ] ("mother of waters") spoken by the Puyallup. Another interpretation is that "Tacoma" means "larger than Mount Baker". This comes from the Skagit "Ta", larger, plus "Koma (Kulshan)", Mount Baker. Other names originally used include Tahoma, Tacobeh, and Pooskaus. The current name was given by George Vancouver, who named it in honor of his friend, Rear Admiral Peter Rainier. The map of the Lewis and Clark expedition of 1804-1806 refers to it as "Mt. Regniere".
Although "Rainier" had been considered the official name of the mountain, Theodore Winthrop, in his posthumously published 1862 travel book The Canoe and the Saddle, referred to the mountain as "Tacoma" and for a time, both names were used interchangeably, although "Mt. Tacoma" was preferred in the city of Tacoma.
In 1890, the United States Board on Geographic Names declared that the mountain would be known as "Rainier". Following this in 1897, the Pacific Forest Reserve became the Mount Rainier Forest Reserve, and the national park was established three years later. Despite this, there was still a movement to change the mountain's name to "Tacoma" and Congress was still considering a resolution to change the name as late as 1924.
In the excitement leading up to Super Bowl XLVIII, John Hickenlooper, Governor of Colorado, named 53 mountains after the 53 members of the Denver Broncos. In response, the Washington State Senate passed a resolution on Friday, January 31, 2014, temporarily renaming the mountain Mount Seattle Seahawks. The resolution expired on midnight Monday, February 3, 2014.

I think Flickr's sharpening, which is undoubtedly part of their resizing algorithm, causes some artifacts in particular cases, like slightly ragged diagonal lines as you can see here at low resolutions. Can't think of any other reason.

I don't have a list of resolutions for the new year. I think it's great if you do and wish you all the good fortune you can imagine. But for me, I don't think I really divide up time in this way. At least not as far as photography goes.
My photography season essentially runs from spring to autumn. I take most of the winters off. Any changes or "challenges," any plans or projects that I decide to do are decided in the spring. Or really, whenever I decide that (which usually happens to be in the spring time).
All that said, this photo was taken on New Years Eve 2024. It's rare that I photograph anything in December, so what a lovely little surprise.

I thought this was just a wasp with iridescent wings photo but the big screen revealed it is a wasp with an ant as prey. I don't know if the wasp's eyes are really green or that's a reflection of surrounding greenery. Circle of life at the micro level.
As 2016 looms, I started reflecting on my photographic goals and resolutions going forward. So, for the upcoming year I hope to:
- Shoot from the heart and not the head;
- Shoot less, but better, and;
- Get over my phobia about photographing people.

My resolution for the new year was to stop eating chocolate. I have failed miserably already. The more I try the more I want to eat it. This thing is gonna kill me.
