With over 10 million Mallard ducks (Anas platyrhynchos) residing in North America alone, the Mallards are one of the best-known and most recognizable ducks. the mallard is a dabbling duck found throughout the temperate and sub-tropical areas around the world. The most abundant and wide-ranging duck on earth. The mallard usually inhabits the freshwaters of North America, Europe, Asia, New Zealand and Australia. Mallards usually feed on plants, such as grass seeds, leaves, stems and aquatic plants, and vegetation like grains, rice, oats and corn. However, they are also seen feeding on insects, mollusks, small fish, tadpoles, freshwater snails, fish eggs, frogs and crustaceans. This Mallard Duckling comes in for a close-up at White Rock Lake in Dallas, Texas.

These grizzlies reside in the Oklahoma Trails exhibit at the OKC Zoo. They appear lethargic after hibernation. A man-made den is provided for them, but they ignore it and excavate a huge den on a hillside in their big enclosure. Our beautiful world, pass it on.

Bar La Torre resides in a 12th century tower in Borgo Pretale along an ancient Roman road in Tuscany. The tower was built as a roadside inn providing refreshment, merriment and lodging for the many Crusaders travelling enroute to– and (hopefully) returning from the fighting in the holy land. The walls here at the tower's base flare out to over eight feet thick to support the enormous weight of the structure… little wonder it still stands after nine hundred years have passed!

The nearby galaxy Messier 33 contains a star-forming region called NGC 604 where some 200 hot, young, massive stars reside. The cool dust and warmer gas in this stellar nursery appear as the wispy structures in an optical image from the Hubble Space Telescope. In between these filaments are giant voids that are filled with hot, X-ray-emitting gas. Astronomers think these bubbles are being blown off the surfaces of the young and massive stars throughout NGC 604.
NGC 604 also likely contains an extreme member of the class of colliding-wind binaries, as reported in a recent paper. It is the first candidate source in this class to be discovered in M33 and the most distant example known, and shares several properties with the famous, volatile system called Eta Carinae, located in our galaxy.

The Eurasian eagle-owl (Bubo bubo) is a species of eagle-owl that resides in much of Eurasia. It is sometimes called the European eagle-owl and is, in Europe, where it is the only member of its genus besides the snowy owl (B. scandiacus), occasionally abbreviated to just eagle-owl. It is one of the largest species of owl, and females can grow to a total length of 75 cm (30 in), with a wingspan of 188 cm (6 ft 2 in), males being slightly smaller. This bird has distinctive ear tufts, with upper parts that are mottled with darker blackish colouring and tawny and the wings and tail are barred. The underparts are a variably hued buff, streaked with darker colour. The facial disc is poorly developed and the orange eyes are distinctive.

South African 60's/70's Folk Singer; Des Lindberg's folk song: 'The Seagull's name was Nelson' :-)

'The Seagull's Name Was Nelson' - Des and Dawn Lindberg (Peter E Bennett) [3.14]
Des Lindberg: vocals, guitar/ Dawn Lindberg (nee Silver): vocals, guitar
This anti-pollution protest song (and an oblique reference to Nelson Mandela, residing on Robben Island at the time) reached #4 on the Springbok charts in July 1971 and stayed 12 weeks in the Top Twenty. Des and Dawn won the SARIE award for Best Vocal Group in 1971 (and again in 1973).
Pure political folk. This song strikes me as nearly as powerful and timely a song as Bright Blue's 'Weeping'. When originally released, was anyone in doubt as to what it was about?

It's a beautiful November late afternoon, as Wisconsin & Southern runs it's business train to Madison, over the Waukesha sub just outside of Palmyra. Mr. William Gardner sure did a fine job of assembling this beautiful A-B-A matched set of E9 locomotives for the company business train. The 101 now belongs to the Friends of the 261, 102 resides at the Illinois Railroad Museum and the 103 now belongs to Ed Ellis, I believe, leaving the WSOR without any classic cab units.

This beehive resides in the hollow of a fairly large tree on our next door neighbor's property. They showed it to us yesterday, and invited me to come back and photograph it, which I did today. The bees were not aggressive and basically ignored me.
Because they're bees I used my 200 mm lens instead of my macro lens. I hand held a Yongnuo flash in an 8.6 inch Lastolite soft box just above the hive and pointing down towards the center. The flash, and my tripod mounted camera, were triggered by a Yongnuo RF-603N.
Residing in Brussels, Belgium, former sanitation worker turned street artist Jaune first stepped into the spotlight in 2011, when his mostly small, multi-layered stencil works of miniature garbage men popped up all over the city. A piece of his work can be found right next to URBAN NATION’s entrance in Berlin, where he portrait a street scene resembling a doll house using his iconic ‘Mini Dudes’.
With most of his work done in stencil, the self-taught artist manages to attain a high level of detail. His lively and dynamic artworks, often showing more than a dozen of his ‘Mini Dudes’, are so rich in detail, that viewers rarely grasp the whole scene in one look.
Having worked as a sanitation worker himself, his fluorescently dressed miniatures of himself portrait the paradox between the visible and invisible, concealed from the public eye despite their flashy outfits, and often act in contrary to what the public opinion would expect e.g. playing golf with bags filled with trash, instead of picking them up.

In Florida, the difficulty of taking photos at the water level resides in the fact that there may be snakes in the grass and alligators in the water, which has nothing to do with the northern regions. When I shoot at the water level, I check if alligators are close by and if there are snakes in the grass, but would I really see them ???
When the "locals" see me lying so close to the water, either they smile or they tell me that only tourists are not aware of the danger of doing so.
Some told me that they saw alligators attacking deer and would not want to be in my place.

The Cèdre Gouraud Forest, in the Middle Atlas mountains of Morocco, is home to a significant subpopulation of Barbary macaques (Macaca sylvanus), primates also known as Barbary apes. This species, endemic to North Africa and the only monkey that lives naturally on the African continent outside the sub-Saharan regions, is threatened with extinction. The forest's name derives from a century-old Atlas cedar named after General Gouraud, whose trunk continues to be a tourist attraction after his death. The monkeys have adapted to the presence of humans, frequently interacting with visitors. This ecosystem, dominated by Atlas cedars, is crucial for the conservation of biodiversity, serving as a vital habitat for these primates. The survival of Barbary macaques faces challenges such as habitat loss and human pressure, making it essential to raise awareness about responsible practices and respect for the local ecosystem.

Lies an ancient castle...
Where, legend tells us, resides a feared monster
a warrior of ruthles cruelty
and powerful enough to defend the home of a young girl
'I shall help you, but only if you promise to hear my story'
'I once helped a beautiful girl like you...'
'So, like that story, I now help you.'
And so the young girl's village was saved...
But as the sun rose the next day, there were no bodies to be found...
Only a bridge stained with blood.
'What happened to that beautiful girl you helped?'
'She couldn't keep my story a secret... so I devoured her.
She never saw the man again
but often thought of him
sitting alone with his story...

The violet turaco or violet plantain-eater (Musophaga violacea) resides in the tropical savannas, wetlands, woodlands and forests of tropical West Africa.
They are found from Senegal through to Nigeria and also an isolated population in Chad and the Central African Republic.
Averaging 45 - 50 cm in length, including a long tail.
Violet turacos are named for their rich purple feathers. The only turaco species without a crest, they showcase a bright red bill, yellow forehead and magenta crown.
Violet turacos are social birds, travelling in flocks of around ten to twelve individuals. They are quiet unmistakable, although often inconspicuous in the treetops.
Their diet consists of fruit, and they are quite partial to figs, but they will also eat leaves, buds, flowers, insects, snails and slugs.

Cologne (German: Köln or sometimes Kölle) is a city on the Rhine River in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia in Germany. About 1,060,000 people live there.
The city was founded by the Romans in the year 50. Before that, it was a Roman castle ("castellum") and a town inhabited by a local German tribe named Ubier at least for 100 years. Archaeologists have found out that the surrounding area was populated already during the stone age.
The most interesting thing to see there is Cologne Cathedral. This church was built from about 1248 to about 1550, but completed only in 1880. The United Nations list it as 'World Cultural Heritage'. Cologne's archbishop Rainald von Dassel brought the relics of the biblical Three Wise Men there in 1164. They are kept in a very beautiful golden shrine in the cathedral. Three golden crowns in the coat of arms of the city symbolize them. They made Cologne a major place of pilgrimage.

The Rhine (Latin: Rhenus, Romansh: Rein, German: Rhein, French: le Rhin[1], Italian: Reno, Dutch: Rijn) is a European river that begins in the Swiss canton of Graubünden in the southeastern Swiss Alps, forms part of the Swiss-Liechtenstein, Swiss-Austrian, Swiss-German and then the Franco-German border, then flows through the German Rhineland and the Netherlands and eventually empties into the North Sea.
The largest city on the Rhine is Cologne, Germany, with a population of more than 1,050,000 people. It is the second-longest river in Central and Western Europe (after the Danube), at about 1,230 km (760 mi), with an average discharge of about 2,900 m3/s (100,000 cu ft/s).
The Rhine and the Danube formed most of the northern inland frontier of the Roman Empire and, since those days, the Rhine has been a vital and navigable waterway carrying trade and goods deep inland. Its importance as a waterway in the Holy Roman Empire is supported by the many castles and fortifications built along it. In the modern era, it has become a symbol of German nationalism.
The history of the Fort de Bellegarde begins with the Kingdom of Mallorca. In 1285, when this kingdom had not yet existed for ten years, Pierre III d'Aragon posed a strong threat to the King of Mallorca Jacques II de Majorque, in particular the latter was in possession of the county of Perpignan and also resided there. When, in the fourteenth century, the King of Aragon took over his neighbour militarily, the tower was abandoned from a royal point of view, being used only by the lord of the region to force travellers to pay a duty. With the Treaty of the Pyrenees in 1659, the border between France and Spain was drawn just at the Col des Panissars. This location made the tower a strategic high ground occupied by the French. But the actual construction of Bellegarde came from Vauban, who decided in 1668 to build a real citadel instead of the tower. While the work was in progress, Spanish troops captured the fort in 1674 and then decided to modify it themselves. After that, the fort will no longer play an important role in history until the Second World War, when a painful episode is played out.

A sight now gone as two of the four Buccaneers that resided there have relocated to Kemble
New owners that have taken over 'Brunters' have no interest in the glorious Aviation assets that have accumulated there over the last couple of decades and as a result, unfortunately many resident airframes now have an uncertain future - if any!

Residing in Orchard Park, the Eternal Flame Falls are one of our most monumental natural landmarks. If you have the opportunity, be sure to visit Chestnut Ridge, the park in which these falls...fall. The ~1,200 acre swathe of land is stunning in every season, and home to boundless fauna ranging the scarlet tanager to the common gray treefrog to the barred owl! Visiting is always a hoot, even if you aren't an owl yourself.
The Old Man of Storr:
The Old Man is a large standing formation of rock part of the Trotternish ridge.
The Old Man of Storr juts out of the undulating terrain like an igneous shard of mythological proportions. A tentpole of the rugged vistas that characterise the Isle of Skye, this point of interest in the Scottish Highlands is a site of folkloric mysticism and natural grandeur.
Situated atop Trotternish Ridge—a peninsula in the northeastern region of the Isle of Skye, created as the result of a colossal landslip—the Old Man of Storr is a 160-foot pinnacle rock formation named after its likeness to, well, an old man. The Storr, which refers to the group of looming outcrops that include and surround the Old Man, is a title derived from the Norse word for “Great Man.”
Legend has it that the Old Man of Storr was a giant who resided on the Trotternish Ridge. When he was laid to rest upon his death, his thumb—the “Old Man”—remained partially above ground.
The Old Man of Storr towers over the Sound of Rasaay at an elevation of more than 2,300 feet, and a hike up the grassy mounds toward the group of curious pinnacle rocks that surround the Old Man provides magnificent, panoramic views of the water and the surrounding mainland.
The raw, bucolic landscape of the Storr and the encompassing hiking circuit known as the Quiraing, have landed the Old Man several movie features, including The Wicker Man (1973), Prometheus (2012), and Snow White and the Huntsman (2012).

This pair of Egyptian Geese reside in my local park and usually produce a good clutch of eggs/goslings each year.
I heard that they had brought the newly hatched goslings over from the nesting site on an island in the lake, to the area where visitors walk. This is a risky move as people enter the park with their dogs at this point (some not on a lead) and the male swan (we only have one pair) is very protective and territorial when his mate is currently sitting on her nest.
Sadly there were initially ten yesterday, but only seven on my count this morning.
I went to the park early hoping to find them. When I arrived Mum was keeping them all warm. Then 2 dogs arrived across the water inlet where they were and this disturbed them. Thankfully another visitor was feeding them with seeds so I got some good footage. Enjoy!

Throughout their entire range, the Southern Hognose resides within the range of the congeneric Eastern Hognose (H. platirhinos). They both can be found within same microhabitat. Eastern Hognose, though, have a much more widespread range and are able to inhabit a broader range of habitats.
These two species are frog and toad specialists and contain several adaptations to aid in feeding on this prey item. An upturned and spade shaped rostral (nose) scale is used for digging in the loose sand and soil for burrowing toads and their enlarged rear fangs can be used to deflate these toads, which inflate themselves with air in an effort to make themselves more difficult to eat. Also, they seem to be immune to the bufotoxin which is secreted by certain toads they feed upon. All this said, both species have been known to eat rodents, salamanders and even eggs on occasion.

That is actually floating ice - it will eventually make it to the narrow passage under the bridges and float down the river. It is pretty interesting to watch the ice cutters chug up the St. Clair River - I am hoping to get pictures of a couple this year.

The original De Havilland DH.114 Heron had four Gipsy Queen engines. Riley's conversion to Continental IO-540 boxers gave the aircraft quite a different appearance, but also better performance and economy.
This is the only airworthy Riley Heron in the world and it resides in Västerås, Sweden. I was fortunate to have these beautiful noctilucent clouds for this twilight shoot, which provided a nice and different backdrop.
I have flown in the co-pilot's seat, and I can say that it is a quite charming aircraft, but not built for long legged individuals ;-)
The Window
Inside one sits
Looking thru a frame
Vibrating branches
Against dirty white
Gently music plays
Wondering eyes
Rhythmic breath
Attention, books await
Coffee within reach
Morning surrenders
Limbs shake…still
Soon storm arrives
Cloistered in warmth
Gazing out…again
Musical harmony
Quietly both reside

Residing at the Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha Nebraska, this Gibbon monkey decided to hold still while I snapped this photo. Aside from her beautiful, luxurious-looking fur, her eyes were stunning.

Panorama:
Late this afternoon we had a very large Male Eagle fly in and perch on a limb in an oak tree just across the road from our house.
I took a few photos but they are not that good, I'm just not equipped to take photos of animals but you can make out that it's an Eagle.
We have a nesting pair that reside on the other side of the pond every year and I'm not sure if this is one of them or just an Eagle passing through on it's way north.
Prior to posting these photos I checked to see if the Eagle was gone but was surprised to see it still perched in the tree, it's probably going to roost there for the night.
Excerpt from the plaque:
In 1873 King Gojong built Geoncheonggung in between the garden hill of Noksan and Hyangwonjeong Pavilion and resided here together with his queen, Empress Myeongseong. Unlike other palace bedchambers, Geoncheonggung was built in yangbank household style with the main quarters (Jangandang), inner quarters (Gonnyeonghap) and an annex (Boksudang). The building is 2.5 times larger than the uppermost limit of a yangban household. When a fire broke out in Gyeongbokgung Palace in 1876, King Gojong moved to Changdeokgung Palace and came back to live in Geoncheonggung in 1885 and resided here for 10 years until 1896. Geoncheonggung was the first place in Korea to have electric lights fitted up in 1887 by the Edison Electric Light Company, and was also the scene where Empress Myeongseong was murdered by Japanese assassins in 1895. Geoncheonggung was demolished in 1909, when the Japanese colonial rule tore down many parts of Gyeongbokgung Palace and the Japanese Governmen-General Art Gallery was built in its place. The gallery was later used as the National Museum of Contemporary Arts and was demolished in 1998. Geoncheonggung was restored to its former state by the Cultural Heritage administration and open to the public in October 2007.
there are prisons
they spot the landscape
dot the sky
and reside inside
gates and traps
watch your step
nobody said it was fair
nobody said it would be easy
it's not
it's not
struggle and fight
against monsters
monsters created for myself
i'll defend my walls
fortify the towers
to keep them in
to keep you out
no
nobody said it would be easy
and it has never been fair.
