Black Guillemot / cepphus grylle. Oban, Scotland. 14/05/22.

The Black Guillemots that reside in Oban Bay for much of the year immediately captured my imagination when I found out about them years ago. Finally, this Spring, I got to see them for myself and they didn't fall short of my expectations!

Despite the challenging weather and light conditions, I enjoyed watching these characterful auks at close hand. They had started to visit drainage holes in the sea wall where they nest and there was lots of animated courtship behaviour going on.

This bird had recently woken up, then preened itself. Here it is about to fly down to the sea where others were gathered.

There is archaeological evidence of people residing in Henley since the second century as part of the Romano-British period.[2] The first record of Henley as a substantial settlement is from 1179, when it is recorded that King Henry II "had bought land for the making of buildings". King John granted the manor of Benson and the town and manor of Henley to Robert Harcourt in 1199.[citation needed] A church at Henley is first mentioned in 1204. In 1205 the town received a tax for street paving, and in 1234 the bridge is first mentioned. In 1278 Henley is described as a hamlet of Benson with a chapel. The street plan was probably established by the end of the 13th century. As a demesne of the crown it was granted in 1337 to John de Molyns, whose family held it for about 250 years.

United Kingdom, Northumberland, Dunstanburgh Castle, Spring 2024

High upon the cliffs along the North Sea, reside the ruins of Dunstanburgh Castle. It was once the largest castle in Northumberland, but today only fragments of it remain due to many wars. The castle was built in 1313 by Thomas Plantagenet who was later executed for treason by his cousin King Edward II. The executioner needed 11 strokes to decapitate Thomas. For that reason, the Earl’s ghost has been spotted around the castle carrying his mangled head, with a facial expression still bearing the pain and horror he suffered. The castle is associated with the legend of Sir Guy. Sir Guy was a knight who arrived at Dunstanburgh Castle, where he was met by a wizard and led inside. There he came across a noble lady imprisoned inside a crystal tomb guarded by a sleeping army. The wizard offered Guy a choice of either a sword or a hunting horn to help free the lady; he incorrectly chose the horn, which woke the knights. Sir Guy found himself outside the castle and spent the rest of his life attempting to find a way back inside.

These birds reside throughout eastern and southern Africa, as well as the southern region of the Arabian Peninsula. They are common in Kenya, Zimbabwe, Botswana, northeastern South Africa, and Namibia.

The roller bird family (also known as Coraciidae) is a species of Old World birds named for their unique ability to perform aerial acrobatics in flight. This consists of side-to-side rolling motions and fast, shallow dives from high elevations.

This is a bird of many colours. Typically, eight eye-catching tones fill their body.

Was that a coyote or a coywolf? If you were standing in Ontario when you saw it, here’s why you could say that you saw either one.

The coywolf, a hybrid of the wolf and the western coyote, is the dominant species of coyote in Ontario. Coywolf or coyote are usually one and the same.

This has been the case in Ontario for nearly a century. It wasn’t until the 1990s that a team of geneticists discovered all coyotes in the province were a genetic hybrid of eastern wolves and western coyotes.

“All the animals we have examined show the presence of eastern wolf and western coyote DNA,” Trent University geneticist Bradley White previously told the Banner.

“Eastern coyotes were recognized as a large coyote, but their relationship to western coyotes and eastern wolves only became clear after DNA analyses.”

DNA data suggest western coyotes arrived in Ontario in about 1919 and hybridized with eastern wolves such as the ones currently residing in Algonquin Park. They then spread east and occupied Newfoundland, as well as the northern New England states in the United States.

The eastern coyote, or coywolf, does differ from the western coyote and eastern wolf, though.

Coywolves aren’t afraid of humans to the same extent that wolves are. Also, coywolves are larger and often hunt in packs, which is probably related to their wolf heritage.

A friend who resides in England has the R7 and the 100-500 RF zoom lens and posted a few flower photos. I tried it on a few this morning, and I liked the result. This plant is in the Nightshade family and all parts ot it are toxic to humans. Birds seem to not be harmed by eating this plants berries.

....this is where most of the girls stay when I'm not playing with them. I love my studio, it's the most happiest place in the world! :)

While residing in Oregon for the winter I really feel spoiled for the choice ...another waterfall today? ...or maybe another trip to the coast? ;-)

Birlot tide mill

This tide mill is located on the west coast of the South Island of Bréhat in Brittany

Its specificity lies in the seawater supply to the mechanism. It does not operate directly with the tidal current that would activate its wheel but nevertheless uses it to fill the pond that serves as its water reserve. In fact, the mill cannot turn if its wheel is submerged, the inertia being too great. On the other hand, when the sea has gone low enough (mid-tide in the case of Birlot), the mill's paddle wheel can be supplied with water by means of a valve that releases the necessary flow from the water reserve. The mill can then turn for 6 hours since the tide goes down for another 3 hours and rises for 3 hours to reach the wheel. This operation can take place twice every 24 hours, depending on needs

Set of 6 - The Tiger's Nest & views along the way.

It's a while since I went there (Nov2017) but just such an amazing place I thought some people may have missed my previous images.

Taktsang Monastery, famously known as Tiger Nest Monastery, is located in Paro, Bhutan and probably one of the top tourist attractions.

Then name "Taktshang" - Tiger's Lair - was derived when the people in the locality came across a tigress residing in one of the caves. Legend has it the tigress actually was Yeshi Tshogyal, a consort of Guru Rinpoche, who has transformed herself into the fearsome animal to subjugate spirits.

Taktshang clings to the rock towering 800 meters (over 2,600 feet) above the valley, and is located 2,950 meters (9,678 feet) above the sea level.

The climb to the monastery takes about 3 hours or so on a comfortable pace. Frequent trekker and gym enthusiast can complete it in about 2 hours. The total distance walked is about 4 km one way with 700m in elevation gained. Part way up there is a very welcome café where you can rest for a while, I did not find it an easy walk (you can hire a donkey to take you part way up but couldn't do that of course).

The Eurasian eagle-owl (Bubo bubo) is a species of eagle-owl, a type of bird that resides in much of Eurasia. It is also called the Uhu and it is occasionally abbreviated to just the eagle-owl in Europe and Asia.

It is one of the largest species of owl. Females can grow to a total length of 75 cm (30 in), with a wingspan of 188 centimetres (6 feet 2 inches). Males are slightly smaller. This bird has distinctive ear tufts, with upper parts that are mottled with darker blackish colouring and tawny. The wings and tail are barred. The underparts are a variably hued buff, streaked with darker colouring. The facial disc is not very defined. The orange eyes are distinctive. At least 12 subspecies of the Eurasian eagle-owl are described.

Eurasian eagle-owls are found in many habitats; mostly mountainous and rocky areas, often near varied woodland edge and near shrubby areas with openings or wetlands. They also inhabit coniferous forests, steppes, and remote areas. Occasionally, they are found in farmland and in park-like settings in European and Asian cities and, very rarely, in busier urban areas.

The eagle-owl is mostly a nocturnal predator. Predominantly, they hunt small mammals, such as rodents and rabbits, but also birds and larger mammals. Secondary prey include reptiles, amphibians, fish, large insects, and invertebrates.

The Bahia Palace, set in extensive gardens, was built in the late 19th century by the Grand Vizier of Marrakesh, Si Ahmed ben Musa (Bou-Ahmed). Bou Ahmed resided here with his four wives, 24 concubines and many children. With a name meaning "brilliance", it was intended to be the greatest palace of its time, designed to capture the essence of Islamic and Moroccan architectural styles. Bou-Ahmed paid special attention to the privacy of the palace in its construction and employed architectural features such as multiple doors which prevented passers-by from seeing into the interior. The palace took seven years to build, with hundreds of craftsmen from Fes working on its wood, carved stucco and zellij.The palace is set in a two-acre (8,000 m²) garden with rooms opening onto courtyards. The palace acquired a reputation as one of the finest in Morocco and was the envy of other wealthy citizens. Upon the death of Bou-Ahmed in 1900, the palace was raided by Sultan Abd al-Aziz.

In the ethereal notes of a melody, magic resided, woven into the very fabric of sound. Each chord, a spell; every refrain, an incantation. Music, the enchantress's language, conjured emotions and painted dreams. Within its harmonies, the arcane whispered, and the mundane transformed into a symphony of enchantment.

What a sad picture...like someone is waiting forever for something. A loved one has passed and the sorrow of the survivor(s) is depicted in this memorial statue. Grief is also displayed...maybe a grief that can never be released until one has joined the loved one on the other side of hope.

Is there ever closure in grief?

Pushing through this myst

I ride on a melody

Cherry picked by my soul and me

Like a concrete statue I stand tall and still

I seek to own

Clouds of thought absorbing this silent song

Summoned with blue music

Fire in the middle where pain and pleasure preside

Walking through this flame

The beautiful Pacific Swallow - Hirundo tahitica - is a small bird which resides and breeds in tropical Southeast Asia and the Pacific. They love perching on telephone lines or any other open place where they can keep watch on the unsuspecting insect life around them and snatch up beetles, ants and termites but especially flies, which they catch in flight. They can fly at 50-65 km/h (32-40 mph) and are very agile in flight which makes them prolific insect catchers. Common in towns as well as open areas they can become quite used to humans and will build cup shaped nests under overhanging roofs as well as on cliff edges, bridges or tunnels. These two were seen perched on a balcony rail at an unused 'rooms for rent over shops' building in Khao Lak, Thailand.

~~~~Phlegm was born in North Wales and he currently resides in Sheffield, UK – England’s Steel City.
He is a world-known cartoonist and illustrator. He is also well known for his self-published comics and highly creative street art. Phlegm’s work is distinctively detailed composed of odd figures and a narrative structure.
The majority of Phlegm’s artwork is strictly illustration-based. He leaves his street artwork and murals for his cartoon-based art. In fact, that majority of his large characters originate from his comics and they are often spray painted onto very large walls. Phlegm prefers to paint his comic work with black Indian ink and a dip pen. He uses color only when he is screen-printing or painting large murals and other objects.
One can say that the only difference between his comics and his murals is the working space; the size and surface where he places his artwork. His art style is highly unique and recognizable making him the most adored street artist. The artist’s work is striking and it will not leave anyone ambiguous. His works are mostly featured in the urban landscape, and run-down spaces. His surreal illustrations tell a story untold, as his imaginative creatures explore the visual narrative.
What makes him so unique is the way he sees street art. Phlegm believes his murals become part of the cities’ architecture being influenced by the surrounding, which is a wonderful way on how to see art.~~~~
It is in duality that the beauty of backlighting lies: an endless choreography between shadow and light, a timeless ballet that enchants the senses and nourishes the soul.
C'est dans la dualité que réside la beauté du contre-jour : une chorégraphie sans fin entre l'ombre et la lumière, un ballet intemporel qui enchante les sens et nourrit l'âme.
The above seen frame was taken at Nikiforos, Dramas the village where I permanently reside ... Not a sea - related area in any way believe me !!! That is why when I saw this amazing, old yet still in good shape fishing boat proudly standing only a few meters away from the village's railway station, I was truly taken aback ... Even the iron construction made to support the three huge oil lamps used to "immobilize" fishes' attention is in excellent shape as well ... All that it could make good use of is some anti-corrosive oil paint ...
I don't like losing such amazing, unusual photos ... But being a photographer that places particular emphasis on the ambient light that surrounds my frames, I had to wait for the sunset to come ... A nice, quiet, peaceful sunset that made my wait worth while ...
Nubian Village isn't a singular village, but rather refers to the Nubian communities residing on Elephantine Island, located on the Nile River near Aswan, Egypt. These communities, primarily Siou and Koti, offer a vibrant glimpse into Nubian culture, known for its:
Colorful houses: The most striking feature is the brightly painted houses with geometric patterns, reflecting the Nubian spirit and adding a cheerful touch to the landscape.
Warm hospitality: Nubians are renowned for their welcoming nature and often invite visitors to their homes for a cup of Karkade, a traditional hibiscus flower tea.
Rich history: The Nubians have a long and fascinating history, evident in their unique language, customs, and traditions. They were skilled builders, farmers, and warriors, and their influence can be seen throughout the region.
While the island has seen some development in recent times, it retains a peaceful and rural atmosphere, offering a welcome contrast to the bustling city of Aswan across the river.
Here are some additional points to consider:
Accessibility: Exploring the villages can be challenging for those with mobility limitations due to uneven terrain and narrow pathways.
Dress code: As Elephantine Island is more conservative than Aswan, dressing modestly is recommended, especially when visiting local homes or religious sites.
Best time to visit: The later afternoon offers pleasant temperatures and the opportunity to witness the captivating sunset over the Nile from one of the island's cafes or tea shops.
Visiting the Nubian villages is a worthwhile experience for those seeking a cultural immersion and a glimpse into the unique way of life of the Nubian people.
Shorin-in Temple resides in the north part of Kyoto, Ohara. The temple was founded by Jakuren, a zen monk, in 1013 and was refurbished in 1777. The temple belongs to Tendai sect Zen Buddhism.
After my visit to Kiyomizudera Temple, I changed my mind and headed to far north from the central Kyoto, hoping to capture some winter landscape images. Shorinin Temple locates next to Sanzen-in Temple, a National Treasure. I could not resist to capture beauty of the architecture, which was decorated by pure white snow!!
Did you know that in Hindu mythology there is a strong, beautiful warrior goddess, who rides a tiger or lion? She is none other than Durga, the invincible. Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva created Goddess Durga, as an avatar of Ma Shakti using their energies, to save devalok, where the Gods resided and living beings on earth from demon Mahishasura, as neither of the three could vanquish the demon. Goddess Durga, with weapons provided to her by the three Gods took over the task of vanquishing Mahishasura.She came to earth to kill the demon Mahishasura. After a long and hard battle, she killed Mahishasura and restored the heaven, devalok to the Gods, which was previously acquired by him.
Worship of Durga
Ma Durga as she is fondly called, is invoked for protection from the powers of evil. The triumph of Goddess Durga over the demon Mahishasura symbolizes the victory of good over the evil. Durga Puja is observed for her victory. Ma Durga has been worshiped from about 400 A.D or probably earlier than that, to the present time. The day of victory is celebrated as Vijayadashami or Dussehra.
Navaratri
The actual period of the worship however may be on the preceding nine days, Navaratri followed by the last day called Vijayadashami in North India or five days in Bengal. Nine aspects of Durga known as Navadurga are worshipped, one by one during the nine-day festival. In South India especially Andhra Pradesh, Navaratri is also celebrated and the goddess is dressed each day as a different devi meaning goddess.
The word devi in Sanskrit means divine or a shining presence. The nine manifestations of Durga worshipped during Navaratri in the month of Ashwin of the Hindu calendar are Shailaputri, Brahmacharini, Chandraghanta, Skandamata, Katyayani,Kaalratri, Mahagauri and Siddhidaatri.
The Garba
Durga is associated with two mountain ranges, the Himalayas in the north and the VIndhyas in central India. In Mysore, which originated from Mahishasooru in Karnataka, she is worshiped as Chamundeshwari, the patron goddess of the city during Dussehra. In Gujarat it is celebrated as the last day of Navaratri, during which the Garba dance is performed to celebrate the victory of Durga as ‘Mahishasura-mardini’.
Durga puja
‘Durga Puja’ is celebrated in Bengal, Odisha, Bihar, Jharkhand, Tripura, Assam and Bangladesh. The Goddess is worshipped as Mother Durga or Ma Durga, the Mother Goddess being the symbol of all the true qualities which define the Supreme Being. Durga is the representation of infinite power and purity, which resides within every being.The Devi Mahatmya or Devi Mahatmyam is a Hindu philosophical text describing the Goddess as the supreme power and creator of the universe. It is part of the Markandeya Purana. It is recited during Navratri celebrations, the Durga Puja festival,and in Durga temples across India. UNESCO has accorded the Intangible Cultural Heritage tag to Durga Puja on 15th December, 2021.
Durga in Art
Durga images can be seen carved on many ancient Indian temples and caves and is seen in murals as well. Durga images began to be available in miniature painting from 16th century to the 20th century. Durga worship is found all over India, more so in Eastern India. especially Bengal. Statues of Durga have been carved out of clay, stone and bronze and painted as patachitra in Odisha and Bengal. Painting styles in Rajasthani and Pahari have depicted the Goddess in its various schools.
The Salar Jung Museum Collection
The museum has an interesting repertoire of Goddess Durga representations. From bronze and stone statues to manuscript paintings of the Devi Mahatmya, the collection is impressive. There are in bronze folk Durga expressions too.The artefacts show her in battle mode and in her peaceful image as well.
Let us discover some of the collection of the powerful and feisty Goddess Durga at the Salar Jung Museum!
(Cut to the luxurious suite where Lilitus currently resides. Trajan and Laithi each have one of Lucas' arms, walking him into the suite and shoving him onto the floor. Laithi gives his head an extra push so he bows before Lilitus' bed.)
Lucas: What's going on? (asks the floor)
(Lilitus makes a motion and Laithi and Trajan hoist Lucas up, shoving him into a plush chair. They rotate the chair to face the bed where Lilitus reclines. She slowly rises, looking Lucas over. He sort of smiles.)
Lucas: Hi, I'm Lucas. You look familiar.
Lilitus: Is this all?
Lucas: Whoa, lady! Harsh! (gets a swift biff on the back of his head from Laithi) Ow!
Trajan: Our hunt was interrupted. We lost two of the Assembly.
Lilitus: (eyes narrow) How?
Trajan: One of our kind, a rebel.
Lilitus: A rebel? Here?
Laithi: She -- escaped.
Lilitus: A rebel, a rebel wearing a female human, defeated FOUR of you?
Trajan: She didn't fight like a rebel. And she didn't seem surprised that we were there. She attacked when there was no need.
Laithi: She didn't have to attack at all. She tracked us down, like a --
There is archaeological evidence of people residing in Henley since the second century as part of the Romano-British period.[2] The first record of Henley as a substantial settlement is from 1179, when it is recorded that King Henry II "had bought land for the making of buildings". King John granted the manor of Benson and the town and manor of Henley to Robert Harcourt in 1199.[citation needed] A church at Henley is first mentioned in 1204. In 1205 the town received a tax for street paving, and in 1234 the bridge is first mentioned. In 1278 Henley is described as a hamlet of Benson with a chapel. The street plan was probably established by the end of the 13th century. As a demesne of the crown it was granted in 1337 to John de Molyns, whose family held it for about 250 years.
This morning, as I was getting ready for work, I got the first of what would turn out to be MANY texts regarding the bizzarre-o situation involving a 34 year-old, Santa Fe Warbonnet-painted B40-8W leading a westbound business train towards the city I reside in.
This is the second shot that I got of the O-PADTOP (Paducah, KY-Topeka, KS), and it's taken just about 20 minutes before sunset. This is at Herschell Rd., which is just east of Tecumseh, KS, and MP 44 on BNSF's Topeka Sub.
As if it wasn't evident from the start that this was an extremely rare occurrence, the BNSF 552 literally died about 100 yards from its destination, as it stopped at Topeka's 2nd St. Interlocking. Breakdowns like this certainly won't help the cause of getting old units like this assigned as solo motors to trains like this in the future, deadheads or not.
When you finally left the compound residing in the middle of the skeleton of the city, you truly could see just how devastating the outbreak had been. Toxic waste bags still dotted the streets. Dirt and destruction, left by the early attempts to contain the virus, could be seen for miles. There was no hope here. “C’mon Daisy-girl. Nothin’ left for us here.” The woman called as the pup sniffed at a pile of trash. She was quick to run after her owner, even if she was clumsy while doing it. The little interaction left a bit of a smile on Stellas face and a new sense of determination in her gut.
