The great crested grebe (Podiceps cristatus) is a member of the grebe family of water birds noted for its elaborate mating display.

The great crested grebe is the largest member of the grebe family found in the Old World, with some larger species residing in the Americas. They measure 46–51 cm (18–20 in) long with a 59–73 cm (23–29 in) wingspan and weigh 0.9 to 1.5 kg (2.0 to 3.3 lb). It is an excellent swimmer and diver, and pursues its fish prey underwater. The adults are unmistakable in summer with head and neck decorations. In winter, this is whiter than most grebes, with white above the eye, and a pink bill.

The young are distinctive because their heads are striped black and white. They lose these markings when they become adults.

The leading families of St. Catharines resided in stately homes along Yates Street and the banks of the original Welland Canal. Built in 1905, in the Queen Anne style, Springbank House occupies the site of an earlier city landmark, the Springbank Hotel and Spa, and later, Bishop Ridley College. This prestigious, 100-year-old residence, which was in the Taylor Family for over 70 years, was renamed Springbank House after Kathy Taylor and her husband Tim purchased and restored it.

Down , down falls the dream

Down the water it flows

See it reflected in the stream

As into your mind it goes

Down ,down falls the dream

Catch it in your hand

As it flows down the stream

Past the natural land

Where the dreams they reside

Where your dreams, you will find

In the flowing water deep inside

Swimming the corridors of your mind

In the absence of colors, the lily retains all its nobility. Its brilliance lies not only in the whiteness of its petals, but in the purity of its lines, the strength of its simplicity, and the symbolism it has carried through the centuries.

A royal flower, once present on the coat of arms of the French monarchy, and a symbol of light and spiritual purity, it has crossed history crowned with dignity.

In monochrome, its sculptural curves reveal a timeless majesty: even reduced to shades of shadow and light, the lily stands as an emblem of elegance and eternity …

At We’re Here! we have decided to hunt out Courtyard Treasures today.

In much of California people reside in suburban settings in single-family “detached” homes, with front and back yards. Courtyards are not extremely common, although they are often seen in commercial settings. It being, Sunday I decided against trying to find office complexes where I could conduct my hunt, and went over to a large apartment development I remembered seeing near my supermarket. I found a few cozy little walled areas here and there, but I thought what this apartment dweller had done with limited space in this corner spot really stood out.

In the distance a modern cargo ship decidedly not the Pinta, which together with the Niña and the Santa Maria formed the fleet of Christopher Columbus (1451-1506) on his first voyage to the 'New' World. In 1492, shortly after setting out from Cádiz, the Pinta developed rudder problems which could only be repaired in a harbor. Columbus thus landed his tiny fleet of caravels at Las Palmas. Soon repairs were made and after loading supplies they were on their way to the 'new' continent. It is said that the house in which Columbus resided in Las Palmas was later incorporated into the Governor's palace (see inset) which is now a museum devoted to him and his voyages of discovery. It's located right next to the Cathedral, which was built around 1500 so Columbus wouldn't have seen it.

Building of the Cathedral began in earnest after the defeat of the enemies of Spain who attempted to take Gran Canaria. Famous in those attempts was Dutch admiral Pieter van der Does (1462-1599) whose men took Las Palmas for a few days in July 1499 but were then driven away. Van der Does died of his wounds on the coast of Africa. It was humorous this morning in the botanical garden here to hear a teacher enthusiastically relating that history to his wards. When he announced Van der Does's defeat an applaus and 'olés' rang out.

Originally called "Clayton", it was the estate of Childs Frick, son of Henry Clay Frick, an American industrialist, financier, and art patron. Childs resided there from 1919 to his death at age 81 in 1965. Nassau County purchased the property in 1969 for the purpose of creating an art museum.

Copernicus resides in the moon's northwest quadrant in the Oceanus Procellarum and is one of the most striking on the moon.

The crater is some 90km in diameter.

This is a second image of the crater during the session but this time I used a focal extender on my Celestron C11 SCT.

Again the terraced walls of the lower side of the crater, along with the craters central mountains, are being strongly illuminated by the rising sun. In contrast the upper side of the crater remains in inky darkness.

The crater is surrounded by an ejecta blanket and this is nicely highlighted in this image with textured detail.

The floor topology shows one quadrant (on the left) is comparatively smooth in contrast to the boulder strewn appearance of the remaining quadrants.

Imaged with a Celestron C11SCT, Focal Extender and a ZWO290MM camera/Baader Long pass filter.

Thanks for looking!

The hilltop offers an unrivalled view of Gyantse town, and there is a small museum documenting the excesses of the British Younhusband expedition, which severely damaged the fortress in 1904. Restoration work at the fortress has taken place in recent years, but visitors have still occasinally found it difficult to gain acces.

The original fortress of Gyel-khar-tse (རྒྱལ་ཁར་ རྩེ་ rgyal khar rtse) is attributed to Pelkhor-tsen, son of the anti-Buddhist king Langdarma, who vainly sought to perpetuate the Yarlung Dynasty from West Tibet following the assassination of his father.

The walls of the present structure were reputedly built in 1268, following the rise to power of the Sakyapas, and in 1365 a palatial castle was founded on the hilltop by the local prince, Phakpa Pelzangpo (1318-1370), who had acquired influence at the court in Sakya through his reputation as a brave general in the southern military campaigns conducted by his Sakyapa overlords, and at Zhalu, where in 1350 he entered into a marriage alliance with the lords of Zhalu. As dowry he was granted the fiefdom of Changra, west of Gyantse, and he invited the great Buddhist master Buton Rinchendrub of Zhalu to reside in a temple which he had constructed there. In 1365, in addition to the Gyantse Castle, he also founded the Tsechen Chode (Shambu Tsegu) castle and temple complex at the entrance to the Gyantse valley and adopted it as his principal seat. The incarnation of Buton, Drubchen Kunga Lodro, also resided there.

The Black Guillemots that reside in Oban Bay for much of the year immediately captured my imagination when I found out about them years ago. Finally, this Spring, I got to see them for myself and they didn't fall short of my expectations!

Despite the challenging weather and light conditions, I enjoyed watching these characterful auks at close hand. They had started to visit drainage holes in the sea wall where they nest and there was lots of animated courtship behaviour going on.

There is archaeological evidence of people residing in Henley since the second century as part of the Romano-British period.[2] The first record of Henley as a substantial settlement is from 1179, when it is recorded that King Henry II "had bought land for the making of buildings". King John granted the manor of Benson and the town and manor of Henley to Robert Harcourt in 1199.[citation needed] A church at Henley is first mentioned in 1204. In 1205 the town received a tax for street paving, and in 1234 the bridge is first mentioned. In 1278 Henley is described as a hamlet of Benson with a chapel. The street plan was probably established by the end of the 13th century. As a demesne of the crown it was granted in 1337 to John de Molyns, whose family held it for about 250 years.

United Kingdom, Northumberland, Dunstanburgh Castle, Spring 2024

High upon the cliffs along the North Sea, reside the ruins of Dunstanburgh Castle. It was once the largest castle in Northumberland, but today only fragments of it remain due to many wars. The castle was built in 1313 by Thomas Plantagenet who was later executed for treason by his cousin King Edward II. The executioner needed 11 strokes to decapitate Thomas. For that reason, the Earl’s ghost has been spotted around the castle carrying his mangled head, with a facial expression still bearing the pain and horror he suffered. The castle is associated with the legend of Sir Guy. Sir Guy was a knight who arrived at Dunstanburgh Castle, where he was met by a wizard and led inside. There he came across a noble lady imprisoned inside a crystal tomb guarded by a sleeping army. The wizard offered Guy a choice of either a sword or a hunting horn to help free the lady; he incorrectly chose the horn, which woke the knights. Sir Guy found himself outside the castle and spent the rest of his life attempting to find a way back inside.

The Eastern Sedge frog or otherwise known as the Eastern Dwarf Frog is naturally found along the eastern coast of Queensland and New South Wales where it is common and widespread. It has been introduced to Victoria via the transport of fresh produce.

It resides in swamps, lagoons and dams, usually found on reeds and floating vegetation. In its natural range it can be found

on the leaves of Pandanus, banana and pineapple plants.

These birds reside throughout eastern and southern Africa, as well as the southern region of the Arabian Peninsula. They are common in Kenya, Zimbabwe, Botswana, northeastern South Africa, and Namibia.

The roller bird family (also known as Coraciidae) is a species of Old World birds named for their unique ability to perform aerial acrobatics in flight. This consists of side-to-side rolling motions and fast, shallow dives from high elevations.

This is a bird of many colours. Typically, eight eye-catching tones fill their body.

A friend who resides in England has the R7 and the 100-500 RF zoom lens and posted a few flower photos. I tried it on a few this morning, and I liked the result. This plant is in the Nightshade family and all parts ot it are toxic to humans. Birds seem to not be harmed by eating this plants berries.
