Shanghai is the largest economic and transportation center in China. It also enjoys a reputation as a famed historical city in the country. Now, the city is striving to turn itself into one of the economic, financial, trade and international shipping centers in the world. Originally a fishing and textiles town, Shanghai grew to importance in the 19th century due to its favourable port location and as one of the cities opened to foreign trade by the 1842 Treaty of Nanking. The city flourished as a center of commerce between east and west, and became a multinational hub of finance and business by the 1930s. However, Shanghai's prosperity was interrupted after the 1949 Communist takeover and the subsequent cessation of foreign investment. Economic reforms in 1990 resulted in intense development and financing in Shanghai, and in 2005 Shanghai became the world's largest cargo port.

The city is a tourist destination renowned for its historical landmarks such as the Bund and City God Temple, its modern and ever-expanding Pudong skyline including the Oriental Pearl Tower, and its new reputation as a cosmopolitan center of culture and design. Today, Shanghai is the largest center of commerce and finance in mainland China, and has been described as the "showpiece" of the world's fastest-growing major economy.

Berlin is noted for its numerous cultural institutions, many of which enjoy international reputation.

The diversity and vivacity of the Zeitgeist Metropolis led to a trendsetting image among major cities.

The city has a very diverse art scene and is home to around 420 art galleries.

Many young people and international artists continue to settle in the city, and Berlin has established itself as a center of youth and popular culture in Europe.

The expanding cultural role of Berlin is underscored by the 2003 announcement that the Popkomm, Europe's largest annual music industry convention—previously hosted for 15 years by Cologne—would move to Berlin.

Shortly thereafter, the Universal Music Group and MTV also decided to move their European headquarters and main studios to the banks of the River Spree in Friedrichshain.

In 2005, Berlin was awarded the title of "City of Design" by UNESCO.

The Reputation perform at the Union Terrace

This is a photograph from the annual Na Fianna AC "Bob Heffernan" 5KM Road Race and Fun Run which was held in Johnstownbridge, Co. Kildare, Ireland on Tuesday 23rd May 2017 at 20:00. The race is now firmly established on the Leinster road racing calendar with athletes travelling from all over the region to take part. The race has gained a glowing reputation as being one of the fastest 5KM road races in Ireland. It is one of the rare occasions around road racing circles these days where a very small club can organise a very successful large participation race. Today's race had another very large attendance with over 470 participants finishing the race following on from a similar number of finishers last year.

This race commemorates the years of work and volunteering that local man Bob Heffernan gave to Meath, Leinster, and Irish athletics from grass roots upwards and his work with the host club Na Fianna AC. Na Fianna AC are typical of many rural sporting clubs who have a large catchment area which combines rural North Kildare and South Meath. The race, known affectionately by club-members as simply "Bob's race" is a fitting tribute to commemorate his contribution to this sport. Our family remembers the days 15 years ago when this race was held in the village of Rathmoylan about 10 miles from the current venue. In those days the race was deemed a success if 75 to 100 runners made the start line. What a testimony to the hard work of Na Fianna AC today's race is! The weather was perfect for road racing - hardly any wind and wonderful warm temperatures - with bright hazy sunshine.

This race is part of the annual Meath AAI Road Race League despite the fact that the race is run completely in County Kildare. The current route for the race has stayed the same over the past few years. However previous to that the race was held in Enfield and also Rathmoylan in County Meath. The race starts on the busy Enfield to Endenderry road and this requires a big effort from stewards and marshalls. However, as always, the event was a resounding success with personal bests and great runs from many of the participants. The course is very fast and flat - it is a one loop course which is left-handed in terms of turns.

The prize giving and refreshments for runners is provided in the Nightclub section of the Hamlet Court Hotel.

We have a large set of photographs from the finish of the race and they are available on our Flickr photostream at www.flickr.com/photos/peterm7/albums/72157684092434056

Currently, we live and survive in two very different worlds: a real one and a virtual one and both can be equally important depending on the situation and angle in which events are viewed or experienced. One even may support or complement the other, as is the clear case of companies developing websites to support their off- line activities and selling efforts, in hopes of reaching broader markets, opening new ones and intensifying their commercial image in whole.

And image is what this is all about. Taking good care of your reputation online will guarantee your website's success. A powerful image will enhance link building efforts, will attract loyal customers and win you top positions on search engine results.

We give you here a list of facts that will assure you a pristine reputation online, or at least, get you out of the jerk list:

- Be honest about your weak points. Recognize the deficiencies in your products, services and team members. Maybe you are not responsible for solving these issues, but being sincere and open about them will take you a long way when in need of standing firm to defend the company or your work.

Never, ever, hide when confronted with unsatisfied clients, bloggers orpartners; instead, move one step forward and respond in an intelligent way; apologize if necessary and take any needed measures to ensure the issue is handled fast and without additional pain.

- Accept that everything leaks out. When talking about the internet, there are no secrets. Assume everything you write, say, comment, tape or even think will be posted online, so make sure you reveal clearly and comprehensively what can be communicated massively and this, basically, should be everything related to the business. If you do not have anything to hide, you do not have anything to fear.

- Project a professional appearance. Guarantee your website is the image of success in terms of design and content. Clients, investors, employees, journalists and partners will rate your professionalism based on your website. Think ahead and give them material to confirm your reputation; post every bit of information they could possibly request or desire and even what they will research by other means, like recommendations, reviews, videos and published news.

- Establish intelligent and enriching tools. There is nothing better to maximize your image online than to be open and share with your customers through a blog or forum. Join one or create one of your own, but make sure its tone is the right one. Whomever is in contact with your clients through this means should outweigh their responses carefully to maintain a professional image. A good idea is to designate a group of people to respond.

- Social networks can be a double- edged sword. You should be very attentive and choose the appropriate one to reach your market and share experiences with them. Center your choice in common points of interest and enriching influences. You can even create your company's social network and efficiently focus your communication efforts.

- Develop a respectful relationship with bloggers. They can significantly affect, positively or negatively, your reputation with their comments and opinions.

- Live up to Google. This search engine bases its results on high standards and everyone knows it and blindly trusts it, so make sure your content is worthy of appearing there.

- Confirm your reputation daily. It is easy through well- known websites and it ensures you react timely to any eventuality.

An integral company is open, honest and coherent. Its principles go hand in hand with its actions. Its main goal is client satisfaction with a passion to serve in the right way, sharing experiences and realities and maintaining a top level of quality and service. It talks the talk and walks the walk.

Here's a little something on the rarer side, thanks to a transaction with a fellow board member.

Ghost in the Shell has taken somewhat of a beating lately. Like Dragon Ball, Ghost in the Shell is one of those series that even the most casual anime fan would have at least heard of... and much like Dragon Ball, its reputation got knocked down a peg or two due to a botched live action movie though, to be fair, was way, way better than Evolutions ever was.

I don't remember the specifics, but I do remember enough to know that the main character is Motoko Kusanagi, a human consciousness, or Ghost, that has been transferred to a humanoid body, or Shell. She's part of a special Police task force that, of course, handles all the fun missions. Through time, her look is updated somewhat but you're pretty much always guaranteed some sort of leather, and some sort of skin tight suit. Stand Alone Complex (or SAC) I believe was the first TV series, and as such I believe originated this classic look of hers.

Now, lets talk about what THIS figure is specifically. The answer is.. I really don't know. Kusanagi here is from the Yamato VMF line which appears to have died off after 4 releases or so. Roughly scaled to be 1/7, the figure retailed for 7,800 yen back in 2008. According to eBay, the aftermarket on this (and all the other VMF lines) are a wee bit higher than 7,800 yen.. like triple the amount.

Normally, this would be the end of the story, but as luck would have it, I was able to negotiate the release of this particular sample for effectively MSRP.

So here we go...

The figure set is in a giant box which is kind of sparse in terms of its contents, especially given the MSRP. Other than the main figure, the set comes with a set of bare shoulders (more on that later), a pistol, a machine gun, and a stand.. that's it. Compare that to the smaller but better geared out Figma, you can see why the larger action figure market kind of died out there for a while until PAK somehow managed to get it up and running again.

As I'm dealing with 2008 tech here, take everything I'm going to say with a grain of salt, but know that the age doesn't excuse everything.

Mentioned above, this figure is roughly in 1/7 in scale, and is the same size as the Yamato Neuromancer Yoko Littner that I picked up a month or so ago from that pawn store (spoiler alert). The 4 year gap between the two definitely shows as the overall sculpting of the Neuromancer is light years better than the VMF. Articulation gains between the two I believe are a functional waist, better upper torso movement range, and chest compress function. Overall, you're not going to get super deep range of motion like you'd expect from the skin tight suited Figma offerings.

The Neuromancer has ridiculously floppy joints, but the VMF wins the award for "figure most likely to fall apart if you look at it funny". Connected using a series of ball joints, I've had every singly possible limb come off the figure, though fortunately reassembly is relatively straight forward and the parts are quite solid. The VMF actually can stand up without its stand, which is something I can't really say for the Neuromancer.

While more mannequin in appearance in comparison to the Neuromancer, the VMF body itself does a decent job of portraying Kunsanagi, aided by a very good head sculpt, albeit with some dead eye stare issues. The gap between her thighs is very, very odd to look at, to say the least.

By default, Kusanagi is wearing her "leather" jacket, which effectively is a solid plastic shell. As a static piece it looks pretty good, but Lord forbid if you decide to actually pose her upper body in the jacket. Arm articulation is extremely limited while donning the jacket, and it's only after you "strip" her of her garment does her articulation truly shine, as it were. As much as I live to see the curves of my Waifus, it would be nice if she had the option of actually posing effectively with her garb on.

Paint work and detailing on the figure, surprisingly, hold up pretty well despite the 11 year gap between its release and now Not that there's much actual paint on the figure, but what is there is solid and honestly is no worse than what I'd expect to see on a good prize figure these days, meaning some flaws are pretty much gonna be there. As mentioned ,it really is the head sculpt and decal work there that sells this figure as being Motoko Kusanagi.

Because her hands cannot be swapped out, Kunsanagi is only capable of holding her weapon in her right hand, which is good and bad.. I suppose I'd do the right anyway, but an option to differentiate would have been nice. What IS annoying, however, is the fact that it appears you have to squeeze the weapon between her middle and ring fingers in order to actually have her hold the piece.

And there you have it.

I don't actually know why the aftermarket price for this figure is at levels to infinity and beyond.. of course, asking price is no indication of actual sold price, but I imagine it's only a matter of time of they're all at those prices.

For now, I can safely say that this figure is clearly a product of it's time and of Yamato quality, with some good aspects that made it into the products of today.

Anyone have a Figma they want to sell me?

Late turned the Austrian Academy of Sciences itself to its Nazi history: The Learned Society was more deeply involved than it seemed. More than half of its members were party members.

By Marianne Enigl and Christa Zöchling

At its inception in 1847, the Academy of Sciences should be a haven of free thought, research and publishing. The complete independence the imperial family had guaranteed. The Oriental Studies and the Natural Sciences soon acquired a reputation beyond the borders of the Habsburg empire. Here worldwide the first institute was established to study the radioactivity.

With the end of the monarchy became the illustrious circle, who had been appointed by the Emperor, the Republic of Scholars, which chose its members.

All this abandoned the professors in 1938. On 18 March they sent Hitler a telegram of submissivity. As the scholars the "leader" five days after the German invasion insured their loyalty in the noble halls of their Vienna's city palace, SA, SS and Gestapo had already begun mass arrests.

For the 75th Anniversary of the so-called "Anschluss" is the Austrian Academy of Sciences for the first time based keeping track its history in the National Socialism. profile there has present the as yet unpublished study, which will be presented on 11th March 2013. ("The Academy of Sciences in Vienna from 1938 to 1945," edited by Feichtinger/ Matis/ Sienell/ Uhl, Austrian Academy of Sciences, 2013, the exhibition catalog)

Many Academy members had for years offered their servises as illegal Nazis the new rulers. The highest administrative staff of the Academy, in which all the threads of the learned society came together, had been as "Old Fighter" since 1933 in the NSDAP.

Their high level of education put the men assiduously in the service of Nazi policies. Just a year before, in 1937, they had discussed in a joint meeting with the German Academies on the exclusion of Jewish colleagues.

Under its new president, the historian and admirer of Adolf Hitler Heinrich Srbik, in 1939 they were "free of Jews", as noted in a log. The Vienna Academy had 21 of their most respected members excluded. Among them three Nobel Prize winners.

Absolutely thrilled, anthropologists, historians, geographers, biologists, medical physicists put themselves into the service of the Nazis, wanted the racial fanatism, the conquests, the enslavement of the "Easterners" "scientifically substantiate". For the "racial science" and measurement of prisoners of war, the scientists had even actively applied.

Only the mounting of a Hitler Bust, the Academy offered, she refused. For cost reasons.

When the war ended in 1945, more than half of the members of the Academy of Sciences were National Socialist Party members . A denazification was practically non-existent. Even an SS-Sturmbannführer was recorded "resting" after a few years of membership.

What the German historian Hans-Ulrich Wehler noted for society as a whole, was especially valid for the circle of top scholars: "Not Hitler's individual psychopathology is the real problem but the condition of a society that had him ascended and ruled till April 1945".

Who moved with the time

Henry Knight of Srbik: (1878-1951), whose ancestors had been poor Czech peasants in spite of his proud name, which throughout his life he tried to hide, was up in the sixties considered as one of the most important Austrian historians. The passage of time can be seen in his attitude. The imperial period, he conducted research - towards the Habsburgs friendly disposed - ober the dominions, after the collapse of the monarchy, he published essays, which suggested a closeness to social democracy. In time for the seizure of power by the National Socialists in Germany, he published his major work "The German unity", a witness of German megalomania an a plea for German living space. The time of Nazi rule were Srbiks best years. In May 1938 his application for membership to the Nazi Party, in which he had introduced himself as "the founder of the all-German conception of history", was approved. Srbiks anti-Semitism was based on the belief in the superiority of the German "race". He got honorary a low member number of the NSDAP to which otherwise only illegal members had been entitled. For president of the Academy of Sciences in Vienna him the Nazi rulers suggested. Adolf Hitler personally sent him to the German Reichstag.

In his inaugural speech as the new president of the Academy in 1938 Srbik thanked "the genius of our leader", and urged the "communion of the blood the earth, the spirit and the heart and the epochal changes of the body of the Reich and the German people". Science should not be in "complete objectivity lose", it had to put itself in the "service of the German people". The Nazi bombast ran through each of his appearances. In the academy, he performed the exclusion of all Jewish scientists and the occupation of their positions with meritorious Nazi party supporters. In one case, his employment for a candidate has been documented who "was recommended by the Party as an illegal".

From 1943, when the German Wehrmacht in Russia was on the decline and Stalingrad had been lost, there were exhortations to hold out. Srbik praised the "sacrifice of his own life for the mission of the nation". It must "burn pure life so that it illuminates the world as a flame of sacrifice".

In March 1945, the President of the Academy went off and away to the Tyrolean Ehrwald. Srbik owned a second home there. Vienna, he should never enter again. Now in his numerous publications, he represented a cultural Austria-German patriotism. As a sign of detachment from the Nazi regime, he led the denazification process, he had the Nazi Party candidate and poet Max Mell awarded the Grillparzer Prize, although propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels did not fully appreciate this. And he had insisted on the term "archives for the Austrian history". Srbiks Friends brought after the war in his favor, he had allowed to quote "non-Aryan" scientists.

Srbik was then already 70 years old. Over the intervention of the Social Democratic Interior Minister Oskar Helmer him was undiminished awarded his pension. Some of his students made great careers in the Second Republic: in his lectures the openly anti-Semitic World Trade Professor Taras Borodajkewycz however triggered the largest post-war protests and was forced to retire in 1966. Christian Broda, who had doctoral work at Srbik 1940 "People and Leadership" was SPÖ Minister of Justice. Srbiks former student was ÖVP Chancellor Josef Klaus.

Srbiks Nazi past had been concealed or glossed over in the postwar period Legends arose. He is said to have as president of the Academy rescued Dutch cultural historian Johan Huizinga, who had been transferred to a concentration camp as a hostage. In fact, he had written a letter, but his request was denied. Huizinga was released for health reasons at the end. The historian and Srbik-expert Martina Pesditschek considers it "unlikely" that Srbiks intervention was decisive.

When Henry Srbik died in 1951, his three honorific obituaries were written in the context of the academy. The uncritical praise lasted until the late seventies. In Ehrwald today is even a street named after him.

Expelled and persecuted

Karl Bühler: (1879-1963), psychologist and philosopher, teacher of Karl Popper, was appointed in the twenties from Dresden to Vienna University, where he with his wife Charlotte, inter alia, set important stimuli in the Gestalt and child psychology. From 1934 he was a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences. 1938 Buhler lost on "racial" grounds his professorship, was imprisoned, escaped with his wife in the United States. In October 1940, he was expelled from the Academy of Sciences.

After the "Anschluss" of "racial" reasons persecuted, survived retreated in Bad Ischl. Member of the Academy since 1921, declared himself his resignation in late 1938, and so he forestalled his exclusion.

Erwin Schrödinger: (1887-1961), Vienna, taught theoretical physics at Jena, Zurich, Berlin, 1933 Nobel Laureate in Physics. In the same year emigrated to England. From 1936 professor in Graz, in 1938 flight to Ireland. Member of the Academy of Sciences in 1928, 1940 excluded. He was taken in 1945 again .

Nazi careers

Victor Christian: (1885-1963), member of the NSDAP and SS -Hauptsturmführer. The Viennese philologist in 1938 was dean at the University of Vienna and head of the SS Research Centre "Ancestral Heritage" in 1939, the Academy elected him as a full member. In 1945 he was one of four with Nazi heavily burdened whose membership was declared "extinct" than five years later resumption.

At the same time, "Your Magnificence" Knoll end of March was politely asked by the Presidium of the Academy of Sciences", ... to take over the interests of the Nazi Party" in the academy. The following year, Academy President Srbik declared himself Nazi officer, Knoll received the honor of full membership. 1945, this was listed as "extinct". Three years later, Knoll was resumed, the Academy president wrote to him". It will be my pleasure to welcome you at the next meeting again". At the University the ex-rector further had ban on entering the house, at the Academy of Sciences, should he ascend the late fifties to the Secretary General. The Republic honored Knoll, who had once proudly proclaimed", the Jew is gone from our science and indeed for all times", with the Cross of Honor for Science and Art, First Class, the academy thanked itself with the medal "Bene Merito".

Photos taken throughout the two hour spectacular at Optus Stadium.

FINALLY finished with this transformation. After being completely rerooted and rebodied, my Funny Face Vanessa is finally the badass I invisioned her to be :)

It's got a reputation as the world's most dangerous bird, but the flightless Southern Cassowary can be quite reclusive if left undisturbed.

It's named after one of its most striking features - the tough bony skin which looks like an armour plated helmet on top of its head. In the wild it lives in Queensland, Australia, and is also found in New Guinea where the word Cassowary means horned head.

The helmet is a vital tool which it uses to push its way through rainforests with its head down.

Southern Cassowaries also have another form of armour they use when frightened. Each of their feet has three toes and each inner toe has a long, lethal claw on which can grow up to 12cm.

If distressed it will kick out with its powerful legs, the sharp claws slicing anything they contact, including flesh! Hence the fearsome reputation.

At Chester Zoo we they have two Southern Cassowaries, an important part of the European Endangered Species Breeding Programme, a carefully managed scheme overseeing the breeding of zoo animals in different countries.

But concern is growing over the future of these birds in the wild. In Australia they are coming more into conflict with humans. Many have been run over by cars and, as forest land is taken over by agriculture and developers, their survival is under threat.

There are estimated to be only a few thousand wild birds left, mainly in conservation areas.

Some distant relations of the Southern Cassowary, including the Elephant Bird of Madagascar and the Moa of New Zealand, are already extinct.

Its survival is extremely important to the continued health of rainforests, as Cassowaries mainly eat a diet of fruit, which means they help disperse the seeds of some 100 tree and shrub species throughout the forest.

The numbers are trending nicely for social media. A new piece of research out this week estimates the global social network advertising spend will top nearly £5 billion next year and approach £6.3 billion the year after. There’s another social media figure on the rise too: despite the increased investment in social, companies are getting blindsided by the social media-fueled PR crisis, as recent research into this shows. Here are a few important tips to consider for integrating social media into your crisis communications plan. They are the most repeated mistakes and misconceptions that lead big brands into trouble with the public.

Underestimating influence/impact of your social media critics at your peril.

Kryptonite is the business school case study here, but loads of brands since – from Target telling the blogosphere they don’t rate Nestle telling off eco Facebook protesters – have failed to understand that bloggers/Tweeters and Facebook protesters may not be The Guardian or The Times, but they do hold plenty of weight.

Giving the online community flashy marketing message when they just want simple, straightforward detail.

These days, companies can get into big trouble for issuing fictitious glowing reviews or trotting out seemingly genuine testimonials by paid actors. Even before these consumer protections were put into place, L’Oreal paid a higher price – it got burned by vigilant bloggers.

Facebook is not just a forum for fans and “Likes.”

Burger King, Nestle, and BP, to name just a few have seen their Facebook pages overwhelmed by critics who want to expose dodgy company practice. Greenpeace has had great success mobilising its followers in a series of corporate Facebook pressure campaigns. BK quickly caved to the demands to cheers. Nestle, on the other hand, shouted back, inviting more opposition.

Culture of unresponsive/uncaring customer service fuels recurring gripes, becomes a PR headache.

Dell learned the hard way that Jeff Jarvis’ customer service gripes were not an isolated issue; a massive backlash was brewing. It just took one well-connected critic to put his finger on it and the avalanche ensued.

For all the fresh money pouring into social media, we would expect the number of errors to rise before companies really get the message that social media investment means more than crafting a just a slick campaign. It means two-way dialogue, transparency and, ultimately, learning from your mistakes.

Swastikas were ancient symbols. However, the symbol has acquired a bad reputation due to ignorant people who do not know that the National Socialist German Workers Party (NSGWP or Nazis) did not call their symbol a "swastika." NSGWP members called their symbol a hakenkreuz (hooked cross) and they used it to represent crossed S-letters for their socialism under their National Socialist German Workers Party. See the work of the noted symbologist Dr. Rex Curry (author of "Swastika Secrets"). American socialists (e.g. Edward Bellamy, Francis Bellamy and the Theosophical Society) influenced German socialists in the use of the swastika to represent socialism. The ignorance about the "swastika" (hakenkreuz) was predicted long ago when Professor Max Muller discouraged Dr. Heinrich Schliemann in the careless use of the term "swastika" and referred to such ignorant people as "the vulgus profanum." The same people are ignorant of the fact that German national socialists did NOT refer to themselves as "nazis." NSGWP members referred to themselves as "socialists" (hence their use of the of the hakenkreuz to represent crossed S-letters for their "socialism"). Such people continue to defame the "swastika" symbol by their ignorance of the hakenkreuz and other symbols, rituals, meaning and terminology under German national socialists. For example, there is widespread ignorance of the fact that the German socialist's stiff-armed salute (and robotic chanting in unison) came from American socialists (Francis Bellamy, cousin of Edward Bellamy), and that the stiff-armed salute had been used in the USA's Pledge of Allegiance for about 3 decades before German socialists borrowed it. German socialists defamed the American salute as they defamed the "swastika," yet only because of ignorant people who still do not know the history. The stiff-armed salute developed because the early Pledge of Allegiance began with a military salute that was then extended outward to point at the flag (it was not an "ancient Roman salute" -another debunked myth repeated by the ignorant vulgus profanum). The above are part of the discoveries by Dr Curry (author of "Pledge of Allegiance Secrets").

From Cranbourn Street, which borders Leicester Square to the north, this is the view into the park at the heart of the square following extensive renovations between December 2010 and May 2012. Visible in the centre is a 19th century fountain presided over by a statue of William Shakespeare.

The square is named after Robert Sidney, the 2nd Earl of Leicester, who bought four acres of land in what was then St. Martin's Field in 1630. He then built a grand house, Leicester House, on the north of what is now the square, and enclosed the land to the south, which had previously been common land used by the parishioners of St. Martin in the Fields. They appealed to King Charles I, who appointed three Privy Council members to make a ruling on the land, and they subsequently decided in favour of the parishioners. The area was developed in the 1670s, when it was a fashionable address, but then became known as a centre for entertainment in the late 18th century, a reputation that it has maintained ever since. These days, it is mainly known for hosting cinema premieres, particularly at the Odeon Leicester Square, on the eastern side of the square, visible in the background. America is Now the Most Admired Country Globally – Jumping to the Top of the 2009 Anholt-GfK Roper Nation Brands Index

* United States Experiences Biggest Improvement in Reputation Among 50

Countries Measured

* Anholt Attributes Change to the Election of Barack Obama

NEW YORK – October 5, 2009 – Brand America is now ranked #1 by global citizens, according to the GfK Roper Public Affairs & Media, a division of GfK Custom Research North America. Results from the 2009 Anholt-GfK Roper Nation Brands Index(NBI), which measures the global image of 50 countries, show the United States taking the top spot as the country with the best overall brand, up from seventh last year.

"What’s really remarkable is that in all my years studying national reputation, I have never seen any country experience such a dramatic change in its standing as we see for the United States in 2009,” explains Simon Anholt, NBI founder and an independent advisor to over a dozen national governments around the world. "Despite recent economic turmoil, the U.S. actually gained significant ground. The results suggest that the new U.S. administration has been well received abroad and the American electorate’s decision to vote in President Obama has given the United States the status of the world’s most admired country.”

"This improved perception of the U.S. is not only in the area of Governance, there are improved perceptions for People, Culture and even Tourism of the United States,” adds Xiaoyan Zhao, Senior Vice President and director of the NBI study at GfK Roper Public Affairs & Media. "While most nations’ reputation does not undergo major change from year to year, the U.S. has clearly bucked the trend. What’s key for the U.S. and other world’s leading nations is to strike while the iron is hot and develop focused policies and communication that draw businesses, financial investors and tourists -- in order to help lift their national economies and their global credibility.”

The NBI is based on a global survey in which people from across 20 major developed and developing countries are asked to rate each nation in six categories: Exports, Governance, Culture, People, Tourism and Immigration/Investment. The NBI ranking is based on the average of these six scores.

Turning to the rest of the NBI rankings, mostly the same countries are in the top ten as in 2008 – but also with some shifts in position. France again captured second place overall, while Germany and the United Kingdom fell to third and fourth, respectively. Japan (5th) and Italy (6th) did not shift rankings from 2008. However, Canada lost ground, slipping from fourth last year to seventh in 2009. Switzerland, Australia, Spain and Sweden round out the top 10.

Other major movers in the overall ranking include several developing countries – such as China, which climbed several spots from last year to 22nd in 2009.

This year’s NBI study also includes questions on the impact the global economic crisis is having on people’s opinions and perceptions towards the nations tracked. Top-line results from this area will be released late fall 2009.
