The chancel at Walsall contains a fine set of late Victorian windows (that nonetheless render it very dark) which are mostly the work of Burlisons & Grylls. The east window is the earliest and has suffered some paint degradation.

Walsall's parish church of St Matthew overlooks the town from it's hilltop site as it has done for centuries. It's present appearance is mostly the result of remodelling and rebuilding in 1819-21 by architect Francis Goodwin, who entirely recased the nave and tower inside and out with pale Bath stone, which with it's elaborate late Georgian Gothic cast iron traceried windows now appears wholly of that date. The medieval chancel however (though much restored) remains in it's original red sandstone and is in sharp contrast to Goodwin's church.

The interior is stunning and something of a surprise; Goodwin totally replaced the nave arcades with slender cast iron arches suppotring spacious galleries on three sides and clerestorey above. But the most memorable feature is the superb plaster ceiling, an early 19th century reimagining of a fan vault complete with huge hanging pendants, which beautifully punctuate it's otherwise flat forms.

Beyond the light and spacious nave (and a fine early 20th century rood screen) is the dark medieval chancel, heavily Victorianised and somewhat gloomy, owing to much late Victorian glass. It sits above a medieval crypt (two separate chambers) and an open passageway that lies under the high altar. The outstanding feature here is the set of medieval choir stalls (augmented by much Victorian woodwork) with misericords, 18 in all, that have been here since at least the Reformation (believed by some to have originated previously from Halesowen Abbey).

This is a really splendid church that rewards, surprises and welcomes the visitor, though sadly it's open hours are currently limited.

Failed bike-jack attempt. Bike is safe, but the lock had to be replaced.

The owner of this lock used it to secure his bike to a rack in his backyard. A thief tried to leverage it open, but did not succeed. The thief did manage to bend the shackle to the point that opening it was extremely difficult, so the owner came to the shop to pick up a replacement.

I'm seeing this sort of thing more and more frequently. Bike thieves are getting wiser...and more daring.

The locked bike was a beat-up SS steel MTB with lots of miles and no high-end parts. The lock is a Kryptonite Kryptolok Series 2 Standard.
