#SundayNightMapNerdTime I like good six word stories. They tell you a lot with so little. As a cartographer, I can relate to that. Maps are synopic designs, meaning they're to be interpreted as a whole. Problem is, we've only got about eight seconds (+/- whatever) to either 1) grab your attention and make you stick around longer or 2) get main message across. A good map does both of these things. Customers sometimes laugh when I tell them that maps tell stories. No, they do, sometimes literally. This map tells a story -- an alternate history of North America -- that was created by one alteration of our historical timeline back in the mid-19th Century, playing forward until today. Does this map, then, tell a story? If it does, consider yourself a co-writer, because all of us fill will in the details of that timeline a little differently. #map #cartography #mapping #althistory via Instagram ift.tt/2J5L4xS

Postcard

The Fay Thomas Collection includes family archives relating to the Thomas family. Moses Thomas (1825-1878) was a significant figure in the history of the area now known as the City of Whittlesea, Victoria, Australia. Thomas and Ann and their family lived at "Mayfield", Mernda, Victoria.

Miss Lily Thomas (1871-1946), Thomas and Ann’s fourth daughter lived there all her life. She collected postcards which her family and friends sent her on a very regular basis. It was an easy and enjoyable way to keep in touch. Production of postcards blossomed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Lily’s collection encompasses the so-called Golden Age (1890-1915) with many postmarked 1906-1907. Some were sent to other members of the family.

The collection document the natural landscape as well as the built environment—buildings, gardens, parks, and tourist sites. Topographical Postcards showing street scenes and general views from Australian and international locations, some of which are artistic views. Popular postcard manufacturers such as Tuck’s Postcards are included in the collection.

Decorative cards, many embellished with floral motives (as a nod to the receiver Lily?) and embossing. Greeting cards are common for Christmas, New Year, Easter and of course birthdays.

Regular senders can be identified from Kyneton and the Great Ocean Road area, Victoria and there is a siginifant collection from Scotland (but not sent from there).

Kick Butts Day 2014. Representatives from the Department of Public Health (DPH) today joined more than 250 young people from across the Commonwealth at the State House for the national observance of Kick Butts Day, recognizing the contributions of teenagers in smoking cessation and prevention efforts.

The young people participating in today’s event are part of DPH’s youth movement, The 84, which represents the 84 percent of young people in Massachusetts who don’t smoke.

High school students involved in The 84 have been educating their communities and their local lawmakers about issues relating to tobacco and, working with local health boards and other programs; have promoted effective tobacco prevention strategies in their communities. Members of The 84 Movement have been vital in fighting the way tobacco industry markets its products to youth.

This photo relates to Bravo’s use of black and white and really provokes an emotion in the student sitting in the desk alone. It creates a sense of loneliness. If you want to imagine this as a story, the story would most likely say the kid got in trouble by the teacher and is now sad. He feels bad for what he did. He’s looking down and is all by himself. You kind of feel bad for him. He may even be crying, but that is for you to interpret. Everyone can see this photo in their own way and depict their own feelings from it.

Richmond Footbridge, lock and sluices

Foot bridge incorporating lock and sluices. 1891, designed by the engineer F.G.M. Stoney (1837-97) who took out 7 patents relating to sluices between 1873 and 1894, but design of the lock-houses by the surveyors Hunt and Steward and ironwork by the firm of Ransome and Rapier of Ipswich. 2 parallel 5 arched bridges of cast iron supported by stone piers with brick and stone lock houses at each end. Each bridge has 5 flat arches of cast iron with spandrels lightened and decorated by vertical slots. Stone piers have round-headed niches to keystones above pointed cutwaters. Elaborate cast iron balustrade with lamp standards positioned over centres of arches. On each bank the bridge is elevated on a brick base serving as a lock keepers cottage with stone dressings and double flight of steps. The overall span is of 348 feet. The central 66 feet spans incorporating 3 sluices which can be raised and stowed horizontally in the space between the 2 bridges. Beneath the outer spans, each of 50 feet were three parallel lines of rollers of which one now remains. the bridges carry public walkways (all closed at time of survey) and there is a toll booth of brick and weather boarding with fretted canopy at the upper level on the Surrey side. This bridge has considerable importance in the history of hydraulic engineering as Stoney first applied here the principal of the floating sluice gate and here pioneered his apparatus for turning the lifted gates into the horizontal position.

When you open the front camera on accident.

Sebald relates the bizarre story of Major Le Strange who lived in the manor house at Henstead. He employed Mrs Florence Barnes as his housekeeper on condition that she dined with him in silence every day. When the Major died, he left Mrs Barnes her fortune. Sebald says that "the great stone manor house in Henstead stood beyond the lake. There is no lake in Henstead, and no manor house made of stone.

Design brief: To produce 6 posters relating the the subject of knowledge and power

The work I produced for this design brief was some of my favourite work produced recently as I went through a lot of stages of change with it and ended up with something I really like.

I wanted to relate this project somehow to interior design so I liked my chosen subject of research (celebrity influence) with rooms of the house. I wanted to portray the influence celebrities have on people and to highlight the empty reasons people want to be famous. I used a scrap book cut out style to make it look like the pictures had been cut out of a magazine (like an obsessed fan). I used the influence of Barbara Kruger and Dexter Dalwood with this work as well as relating to MTV Cribs.
