The Fay Thomas Collection includes family archives relating to the Thomas family. Moses Thomas (1825-1878) was a significant figure in the history of the area now known as the City of Whittlesea, Victoria, Australia. Moses and Ann and their family lived at "Mayfield", Mernda, near Whittlesea, Victoria.

In the fall of 2020, IDeATe’s Introduction to Textile Media course had three special experiences relating to indigo and natural dyeing thanks to the FRFAF grant. Visiting artist Rosa Sung Ji Chang gave a generous and thorough presentation about her work learning and using Korean indigo dyeing methods as well as her experiences creating a natural dye garden with Blue Light Junction (a community natural dye facility in Baltimore, MD, led by Kenya Miles). We learned about the process of working with Indigo from growing the indigo to creating dye from the plant to working with the indigo dye vat. We also learned that Korea has a long history of indigo dye, but that this history is mostly unknown to the world and even to most Koreans. Globally and within Korea, the Korean indigo techniques have been overshadowed by indigo processes from other places and is currently being rediscovered and celebrated within dye communities in Korea.
The students in the Introduction to Textile Media course also participated in two workshops: dyeing with indigo and natural dyeing with plant matter. The workshops took place outdoors on CMU campus and were also open to students outside of the Textile Media course. These were the only occasions where Textile Media students who were in Pittsburgh were able to meet and interact with each other in person. The workshops covered (brief) histories of the plant dyes and the peoples who developed their use before introducing the students to the hands-on techniques. Students then dyed multiple fabrics with the indigo or natural dye. Each workshop had 20-30 participants (the maximum number we could facilitate) and the feedback from Rosa's visit and the workshops was very positive.

Darby Lane – ordinary enough but in the artist’s hands it becomes, “…a way which, after ages, shyly yields its secrets to a hiker led astray. Even without the poetry, the accompanying photography would make this a striking performance. This aspect of the production is a superb and perfectly-timed sequence of black-and-white images. It is especially so for the wildlife – monochrome images coloured in by words - a wheatear which would, “drop from mist, from wisps of cloud… on wings of slate-blue love…caped in colours straight from some Venetian ball.” And that’s not all. The poetry and the photography, as if these were not enough by themselves, are further enhanced by well-placed additional soundtrack pieces (loved the muted background conversation in Conway’s hardware store) - all very cleverly edited together. If you treasure the Derbyshire countryside, the seasons, the rural way of life, wildlife, poetry – then please do not miss this exceptional and lovingly performed production.”

Legend relates that in January 1297 François Grimaldi, disguised as a monk, sought shelter at the castle. On obtaining entry he murdered the guard, at which point his men appeared and captured the castle. Thus the fortress became the stronghold of the Grimaldi. This event is commemorated by this statue of François Grimaldi in the grounds of the palace.

Many of these paintings and drawings of flowers that Mondrian made in 1908–9 are full of symbolism, mainly relating to Theosophy. Shortly afterwards, he moved away from symbolist representations, but continued to portray flowers until his death, selling them for income at times of financial difficulty. He repeatedly returned to the same varieties, such as chrysanthemums and arum lilies. Mondrian was known to trace some of his drawings of flowers, using carbon paper, to create multiple versions. The same elements are repeated in endless variations – also a distinctive feature of Mondrian’s neo-plasticism.
Mondrian’s paintings of dying sunflowers and chrysanthemums draw on Vincent Van Gogh’s paintings of wilting sunflowers. Metamorphosis is one of several based on the observation of a chrysanthemum over a period of days. A ghostly essence seems to seep away from the withered flower head. Theosophy was based on the idea of higher planes of existence, beyond the physical world and scholars have suggested that the white-yellow halo can be interpreted as an artistic re-creation of the flower’s etheric shell, or aura. Such ideas that were promoted by figures like Rudolf Steiner – a prominent Theosophist and founder of Anthroposophy – who emphasised that plants share the same spirit as humans.*

Hilma af Klint & Piet Mondrian: Forms of Life
(April – September 2023)
This is a unique chance to discover the visionary work of Swedish painter Hilma af Klint and experience Dutch painter Piet Mondrian’s influential art in a new light.
Although they never met, af Klint and Mondrian both invented their own languages of abstract art rooted in nature. At the heart of both of their artistic journeys was a shared desire to understand the forces behind life on earth.
Best known for his abstract work, Mondrian in fact began his career – like af Klint – as a landscape painter. Alongside Mondrian’s abstract compositions, you will see the rarely exhibited paintings of flowers he continued to create throughout his life. Also on display will be enigmatic works by af Klint in which natural forms become a pathway to abstraction.
Both artists shared an interest in new ideas of scientific discovery, spirituality and philosophy. Af Klint was also a medium, and this exhibition showcases the large-scale, otherworldly paintings she believed were commissioned by higher powers.

Relating to idea's of philosopher Heidegger ("every action we take is based around actions we take in the future") and Hitchcock ("there is no terror in the bang only the anticipation of it.") as well as researching into the activity of the amygadala during suspense. (the part of the brain that processes suspense). As well as looking at the fight or flight response and how suspense is interlinked with survival. This research resulting in an equation consisting of three variables; "hope+unknown+fear= suspense.". Development of creating a 3D diagram for this equation that explains the concept conceptually as well as kinetically e.g fear+unknown-hope= dispear. (visually; all variables balancing person in suspense; physically increasing force of hope on balanced person, fear is lost. person is no longer balanced in position of suspense because equation itself is unbalanced.)

Wout's first two jigsaws are by the British makes Peacock and relate to the Coronation of King George V in 1911.
Peacock, for Hamleys 105pc Coronation of George V Westminster Abbey 1911, early plywood, 25x18cm. Blank divided vertically in three, dissected in a typical way to produce sinusoidal pieces.
We haven't identified the artist of the scene yet, but is likely to be contemporary and full of accurate portraits of the people involved in the ceremony at Westminster Abbey. The print has been trimmed slightly on the sides and bottom edges.
The same painting was used by other cutters.
The printed box is typical of Peacock's contract work, with the Hamley label posted into a blank frame. The label shows it to be a no2 size, 10x7in, and the print title has been pasted onto the label, although now a large part of it is missing.
Peacock initially produced jigsaws under contract for several department stores and stationers. Wout believes that later on they worked mainly for Hamleys. He gave a talk to BCD about this, which is on the BCD members website.
