“Simon Corble relates a year-long journey of his encounters through the very special landscape of Derbyshire’s White Peak. But this is no ordinary journey. It is also a beautiful work of art in every one of its facets – poetry, photography, soundtrack pieces and stagecraft. The poetry is captivating and sensitive direction by Alice Bartlett ensures that Simon’s inimitable presentation of his work makes one feel that this is a conversation he is holding with you in a quiet corner of a local pub on a winter’s evening. Words and metaphors flow delightfully and with ease. Spellbinding writing; Dylan Thomas’s Fern Hill brought into Derbyshire winterscapes. The piece is divided into months, each having three separate observations; all very different and all taking a look through the artist’s eyes at something capturing the attention. Darby Lane – ordinary enough but in the artist’s hands it becomes, “…a way which, after ages, shyly yields its secrets to a hiker led astray. Even without the poetry, the accompanying photography would make this a striking performance. This aspect of the production is a superb and perfectly-timed sequence of black-and-white images. It is especially so for the wildlife – monochrome images coloured in by words - a wheatear which would, “drop from mist, from wisps of cloud… on wings of slate-blue love…caped in colours straight from some Venetian ball.” And that’s not all. The poetry and the photography, as if these were not enough by themselves, are further enhanced by well-placed additional soundtrack pieces (loved the muted background conversation in Conway’s hardware store) - all very cleverly edited together. If you treasure the Derbyshire countryside, the seasons, the rural way of life, wildlife, poetry – then please do not miss this exceptional and lovingly performed production.”

Relating to idea's of philosopher Heidegger ("every action we take is based around actions we take in the future") and Hitchcock ("there is no terror in the bang only the anticipation of it.") as well as researching into the activity of the amygadala during suspense. (the part of the brain that processes suspense). As well as looking at the fight or flight response and how suspense is interlinked with survival. This research resulting in an equation consisting of three variables; "hope+unknown+fear= suspense.". Development of creating a 3D diagram for this equation that explains the concept conceptually as well as kinetically e.g fear+unknown-hope= dispear. (visually; all variables balancing person in suspense; physically increasing force of hope on balanced person, fear is lost. person is no longer balanced in position of suspense because equation itself is unbalanced.)

Day 163 of 365: "I Can Relate"

I saw Mom & Dad when I first got to the pond, but didn't spot the little one until they got into the water.

Having just dropped off my little one, I couldn't help but smile at the oddly familiar scene.

Relating back to my theme of 'Growth and Evolution', I decided to focus on the idea of evolution of a photograph. I combined my artist research (John Stezaker and Maurizio Anzeri) to produce some testers prior to creating my final outcomes

Relating to the barn windows, and weather. It was about 10 degrees F. with a 15 MPH breeze. We'd just gotten about 8 " of snow overnight.

To relate to Fashion Photographer Nick Knight's work, I have created a symmetrical image to represent my influences. Here, I developed an understanding of how to work with different materials, such as chiffon and how to create and present a conceptual idea. The use of negative space really draws the viewer into the main subject.

Was over at my parents for Easter and this sign is sitting on top of my Dad's television set. Anything related to my Dad is always humorous whether it be a card or a gift. It's where I get my quick witted sense of humor from. As they say the apple doesn't fall far from the tree and after all I am my fathers son.

CHAPEL • OF • THE • HOLY • CROSS

How the Chapel Came Into Being

by: Marguerite Brunswig Staude

In order to relate the story of this church, we must turn back the pages of time. twenty-five, years have gone to engender this moment.

The first conception came to me in 1932. I was in New York watching the newly completed Empire State Building. When viewed from a certain angle, a cross seemed to impose itself through the very core of the structure. What an idea for a church! For days it haunted and obsessed me, insisting on taking shape. Being a sculptor, I visualized a model in sculptured terms. Using simple, bold strokes, a sketch was made … the result being a cruciform church … in plan and elevation. And was this not a natural and logical expression of the sign upon which every Catholic Church is built? Unfortunately, the leit-motif is lost in construction, so much so that a cross has to reassert itself on spires. This is particularly apparent in the light of St. Patrick’s Cathedral which has exhausted itself in copying the Gothic instead of bravely pioneering, giving an expression of the day in contemporary language as did its laity neighbor, the Rockefeller Center.

All the more reason to start the ball rolling. My sketch was seen by Lloyd Wright, who was struck by the idea. Together we interpreted in terms of a modern, skyscraper cathedral to a 500 ft. scale. He built the first architectural model with the articulated cross, the whole structure lined in glass and perforated stone screen. This was to encircle one square city block. In 1937 this plan was accepted and to be built in Budapest on one of the Hills overlooking the Danube. The war soon put a stop to this dream.

Having lain dormant for some years, the Grge of making this church a reality again started a ferment, when seeing what Assis and Vence have meant in liturgical church movement. Should not we in America also have a national shrine where God can be worshipped as a contemporary? And would this not bring Him closer to each and every one of us? Having a ranch in Arizona in the Oak Creek Canyon, an abundance of spectacular sites presented themselves and seemed to be calling for the existence of a shrine.
