There are several endings at play here. One story from this day belongs to someone else and I won't relate it here. But the others?
On the morning of this shot I headed up to Digital Camera Warehouse in Canterbury in Sydney. (That's a few klicks from my old residence, actually; it used to be a lovely short drive out to there of a weekend morning, albeit one that was a tad too tempting to make too often.)
I was off to pick up some filters and other odds and sods. On the way there I drove past a large independent hardware store that was quite near my old place. That was another piece of local temptation for me and, consequently, part of my own past. It also sold timber, and had signs up advertising all of the timber types available including Oregon. There may have been something prophetic in that for within a year or so of moving there I was indeed standing on the very soil of Oregon itself. And that trip launched me on my photographic journey because the shots from my old Kodak 35mm were so utterly gorram appalling that I decided that I should learn to do photography properly. But I digress, or maybe I don't. Anyway, after more years than I can know it has a "Closing Down, Last Days" sign up.
I drove on to Canterbury. DCW is on the right and it's impossible to turn into their car park from my side of the road so I usually loop around the back streets, past light industrial factories (joinery and so forth) and a large Mitre 10 hardware store down near the Cooks River. Or which used to be, for on this day there were traffic controllers directing vehicles through to allow construction vehicles into what is now a multi-story apartment block construction site. And some of the other light industrial places have "For Sale, Rezoned Land stickers" on them. The whole character of the area is changing; once light industrial, now high density residential.
Another ending was my hope to have the 40-150mm f/2.8 lens to supplement my 12-40 before the end of the year. DCW said that Olympus had reported a worldwide shortage and, indeed, other places had them as "Pre-order" as well. But I knew that before I went there. The closure of two large independent hardware stores and the redevelopment of Canterbury... that I knew nothing about.
So why isn't that my shot? Because there was a beginning that day as well. As the astute EXIF reader will be able to deduce.
I delayed posting this for a day because another PBaser (whose name isn't relevant on Flickr) posted a macro in his PAD that made this shot of a Bird Of Paradise plant look, how shall we put it... a tad primitive. However it was from the first set of shots with this lens, and in very different (and harsher) light, so it is what it is. And I'm not really disappointed with what it is.
Edit: So PBase shows (not for the first time in a 2014 shot) the complete and utter absence of the EXIF data set in the grid. The usual data appears on the .jpg and in the Tech Notes field of PBase. Why it's rendering nothing into the grid I have no idea. But at least the lens details are there.

Edit April 2025: Mmmh. A glitch in PBase. Wow. Never seen that before. I'm laying odds that it will load fine in Flickr and as for PBase... at this point who cares?
This is a later image from my first ever session with my Olympus 60mm f/2.8 Macro lens, as described in my Book Of Firsts album. (That's what I was referring to in the "astute EXIF reader" comment above, because when I wrote that I didn't expect PBase to screw up the EXIF.) I wouldn't rate this one as the greatest macro ever taken (or even close), but it worked well enough for the shot of the day.
Also I'm not sure what prompted me to write "within a year or so of moving there" unless I was just scattering disinformation seeds as I am wont to do at times, but it was just over 3 years after I moved there that I made my trip to Oregon, not 1.
Oh, and after 11 years? I have no idea what the ending that I referred to in the first paragraph is. With my current workflow there would be a reference to it in the Word document where the descriptions are compiled. But then, if I had my 2025 workflow in 2014, I wouldn't need to be spending time updating shots to move from PBase to Flickr.
Always, always add your descriptions into the EXIF, boys and girls. It makes photo portability so much easier.
One last thing... although I didn't shoot the redevelopment today, I did when I came back near the end of December. That shot, you can see here.

Roxy Paine, Graft, 2008–2009
At first glance, this sculpture's composition of trunk and branches, and its scale, relate Graft to mature trees in the garden. Yet the differences outweigh the similarities, starting with its shiny, stainless steel exterior. One set of branches appears orderly and rational in its progression upward, while the other set exhibits crabbed, twisted, and fraught boughs. The work's title refers to the horticultural procedure of joining one tree or plant to the bud, stem, or root of another in order to repair it, adapt it to climate or soil change, propagate it, or produce new fruits or flowers. The conjoining of two distinct sides in Graft may also be seen to connect the binary historical tropes in the history of art—classical on the one hand, and romantic on the other. Another definition of "graft" refers to the means by which an individual or entity gains power unfairly. This sculpture is part of a series of stainless steel sculptures the artist refers to as "Dendroids," a term that describes a tree-like, branching form, but also evokes an artificially engineered or mutant body. Graft was added to the Sculpture Garden on the 10th anniversary of its opening.

The National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden is the most recent addition to the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. in the United States. It is located in the National Mall between the National Gallery's West Building and the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of Natural History.
Completed and opened to the public on May 23, 1999, the location provides an outdoor setting for exhibiting several pieces from the museum's contemporary sculpture collection. The collection is centered on a fountain which, from December to March, is converted to an ice-skating rink. The outdoor Pavilion Café lies adjacent to the garden. Laurie Olin and his firm, OLIN, were the landscape architects who redesigned the garden.

The National Gallery's Sculpture Garden is one of the Mall's peaceful sanctuaries -- offering bench seating, lush landscaping and a view of 17 contemporary sculptures. A fountain marks the center of the garden for most of the year, but an outdoor skating rink takes its place from November until March.
The garden's sculpture collection includes Sol LeWitt's "Four-Sided Pyramid," a blocky, geometric form, and Claes Oldenburg's "Typewriter Eraser, Scale X," which playfully depicts the antiquated object. Perhaps most striking is Alexander Calder's bright red abstract work, "Cheval Rouge (Red Horse)."
Background: In his original design for Washington, architect Pierre L'Enfant envisioned an oasis where the National Gallery's Sculpture Garden now stands. But the garden as we know it didn't officially open until 1999. The Morris and Gwendolyn Cafritz Foundation provided funds for the garden in 1996. A skating rink was incorporated into the design since one had been operating at the site since 1974.
Ice skating: This is the area's most picturesque place to skate: an open-air ice rink surrounded by museums, monuments and modern art. Music plays as you glide around, and the Pavilion Cafe is open for hot chocolate, coffee, wine and snacks.

Last month, realtors and City of Charlotte Code Enforcement volunteers joined forces to make a meaningful difference in Charlotte neighborhoods. They performed various tasks such as cleaning gutters, landscaping, repairing stairs, and enhancing exterior areas. We express our gratitude for their hard work and dedication.
