Check out this beauty! This "Little Brown Bat" was found stranded in a sink in one of the Gulf State Park Campground restrooms. Bats are different from birds in that they have to "fall" into flight from something high, like a tree, rafter, or cave ceiling. My wife took custody of this cutie and it was released at our house to each mosquitoes 'til its heart's content.

February Photography Class:

Lovely Lizards will be hosting a 2-Day photography class, taught by Lovely Lizards Photographer, Roger Reetz. The class will be an intensive 10-12 hour study, starting with “this is a camera” and covering such topics as composition, portraits, nature photography, existing light photography, landscapes, going manual, wildlife photography, photo editing apps, and much more. It will be beneficial for both “Point and Shoot” and DSLR camera owners but will have a heavy focus on using a DSLR camera. Weather permitting; we will also get some hands on practice with taking pictures outdoors.

The course will be held at the Orange Beach Golf Center on Canal Road, on Saturday, February 20th, from 9-4ish and Sunday February 21st, from 1-8ish. The cost of the class is $75 (check or cash). We will break for lunch on Saturday, but please bring a bag lunch for Sunday. For more information or to register for the class, please email Roger at rkreetz@gulftel.com.

Last week, we were invited to join and document research being done on the Alabama Beach Mouse, which is an endangered species. As part of this research, live traps are set up on the beach and then the mice are each checked for a variety of criteria, tagged, and released back into the dunes.

The Alabama Beach Mouse is a very important indicator species, for helping scientist monitor the health of our dunes.

We were very grateful to be allowed to take part in documenting this important research.

Eagle Update: I had another great Sunday afternoon with the Eagles at Gulf State Park. When I arrived, mom showed up, landing in a tree nearby. She then began calling (either fussing at me or calling to her eaglets) and the eaglets would usually respond back to here. It was an awesome time! If you haven't been to see these amazing birds yet, you need to soon. It won't be long before both babies leave the nest for good. Please check in at Gulf State Park's headquarters or Nature Center first for directions and viewing guidelines.

It is official! Our babies have both "fledged" (a.k.a. left the nest). I found them this morning sitting together in a tree just a little bit down the trail towards cabins. They will still be in the area for a little longer while they learn to hunt and fish for themselves, then they will leave and hopefully return in five years with spouses of their own to make more nests along our beautiful Gulf Coast.

Mamma lizard and the hatchlings were out last night, and that gave me a little time with my mistresses (my camera and my Jeep). I decided to use it on a shot I've been thinking about for a while. It wasn't as good as I hoped, but...

I've known our Gulf Shores' Eagles have been back for a couple of weeks now, but yesterday was the first time I have caught one of them on the nest. It was completely destroyed after last season, and the parents came back early this year and totally rebuilt it. Today I caught one adding some "furniture" to soften things up. It's good to see them back.

The sad eyes on this little girl made me want to wrap her up and bring her home. So many precious children there.

I generally don't like "clowdy eyes" but I will make an exception in this case.

This noisy knocker (Downy Woodpecker) has been drumming outside my workplace all morning. It was nice to get to use "Bertha" on something other than the eagles :).

Cool Facts: The Downy is the smallest North American Woodpecker. "A group of woodpeckers has many collective nouns, including a "descent", "drumming", and 'gatling" of woodpeckers".

I thought I was done taking pictures for the day when this young lady peaked around the corner on me. If I could have, I would have wrapped her up and brought her home with me.

All is well with our eagles. Mom is keeping an eye on the little one(s) in this photo, but they are still to small to see over the nest. It shouldn't be long before we start seeing they grey little heads peaking over.

It's been a while since I got out and took some pictures, but we had a decent sunset the other night and I wanted to test out my new lens. So far, I'm pretty pleased with the lens. The lens is a Canon 24-70mm, f/2.8 L. It's the last of the lens on my "realistic" wish list. Now I just need about $30,000 to get that 1200mm L series 😉.

I've always had a fondness for railroad tracks. I don't really care for the trains themselves, only the tracks. I think it may come from my days growing up in Robertsdale, walking the tracks (that are no longer there) with my best friend Mark Waldrop. I could follow those tracks forever. For me, they trains are about "hurry, hurry" and get to your destination. Tracks are about the journey and the unknown of where that journey will take you.
