Update: We went out to the sailboat this evening and things have gone from bad to worse for the owner. Sand is taking over the craft and the waves have busted through the windows on the port side, allowing sand and water in. At this point, I think it's going to take a backhoe and a water jet (Mama Lizards idea) to move enough sand to get it out. Very sad situation.

In the Mountains of Orange Beach. This cloudy image was created at Alabama Point this morning, just before sunrise. I was using a neutral density filter, which allowed me a full, 30 second exposure turning the rolling waves into a layer of clouds, misting around the rocky base of Mt. OB. I'm still not sure if I like this one though. What are your thoughts about it?

Pine Warblers are one of the more colorful birds we get in our area. This pretty fellow was hanging out on Coyote Crossing in Gulf State Park yesterday.

I think it is safe to say that we have an egg :D. When I got to the nest this afternoon, mom was hunkered down like she was sitting on a egg. It didn't take long for dad to show up with a nice, tasty fish for mom to eat. After which, he flew off again and she settled right back down.
That should mean we can expect eaglets around the first week of January and we should be able to see them about two weeks after that. I do love this time of year.

Some days you go looking for eagles and all you get is a buzzard chewing on an opossum. (Technically, it's a black vulture, but buzzard sounds better right now).

I had a really nice afternoon out at the eagle nest. There are definitely two babies right now, but the dominate one was really picking on its sibling. Eagle eggs are laid several days apart causing them to hatch at different times. Do to the rapid growth rates of birds, the first one out is much bigger than its nest mate for a while. This means it is stronger and more dominate and they have been known to kill their younger siblings with the parents standing their watching. This is especially true of the first one is a female. Simply put, girls don't play nice! Hopefully both of these babies will make it to adulthood.

Blue skies, a good book, a cup of coffee, and plenty of time to enjoy the eagles today. I was also blessed with a number of good shots and got tell share the eagles with an Air Force family that was visiting from the St. Lois area. All an all a very nice afternoon.

After enjoying about an hour at the watching the nest and reading my book, mom finally decided to get up an take a stretch break before setting back down on the egg(s). It wasn't a bad way to spend an afternoon :).

Just when you arachnophobia types thought it was safe to go to the beach. We came across this beautiful Santa Rosa Wolf Spider (Arctosa sanctaerosae) while we were on the beach the other night for the beach mouse trappings. Fear not though. I can assure you we were much more interested in it, that it was in us. Did you notice its eyes and the soft, white fur on its abdomen? It kind of makes you want to pet and cuddle with it, doesn't it :)?

Chances R Restaurant & Lounge, 124 West 5th Street, York, Nebraska. This restaurant was founded in 1932 by Hiney Neufeld, and was known as the “Cozy Lunch.” He advertised the bar and grill as a “modern hamburger shop.” Neufeld operated the business until 1937 when it was sold to a father and son named Robert and Roy Schultz. Shirley Reetz’s father and mother, Roy and Thelma “Mimi” Schultz operated the Cozy Lunch from 1937 to 1957, when Raymond and Shirley Reetz purchased the business. At that time, the seating capacity was only 50 people.
The Reetzs managed the business as the Cozy Lunch until 1964. Then, additional buildings were purchased and completely remodeled, which increased the seating capacity to 180 people. The name was then changed to Chances “R” Restaurant. Expansion was risky, so “chances are, we’ll go broke,” Raymond confided to Shirley, “but I want to give it a try.” At that time, a private meeting room called the Shir-Ra Room was made available for meetings and banquets.
This was also when off-premises catering to local and surrounding areas began. In August 1978, their daughter and son-in-law Suzanne and Tom Vanous joined the restaurant as partners in the operation. The catering service by this time had grown to be able to serve up to 1,000 people. Their son, Jason Reetz joined the business with his wife, Holly, in 1999.
In 1983, the restaurant was remodeled and expanded once more to include the Hob-Nob Lounge and Tommy-Suz Beer Garden. This increased the seating capacity to 550 people. The building was redecorated with mahogany woodwork, stained glass and brass in the lounge, West Dining Room, and Shir-Ra Room, and oak woodwork in the East Dining Room. The Tommy-Suz Beer Garden designed to be more casual with a mix of old-time furnishings, antique gas pumps, signs, and memorabilia.
Raymond and Shirley Reetz received the honor of being named as the 1994 “Restaurateurs of the Year” by the Nebraska Restaurant Association. Raymond & Shirley Reetz retired in 2008 after owning Chances “R” for more than 50 years. Chances “R” Restaurant and Lounge continued to be owned and operated by their family, Tom and Suzanne Vanous, until September 2021 when Bryan and Renee Jantz took over ownership.

Yesterday, I was sitting on a dock, doing some birding. I was distracted with my phone for a minute and heard a big splash. When I looked up, I saw that this Juvenile Brown Pelican had landed about 30 feet away from me, way to close for the 500mm lens and 1.4s extender I was shooting with. I quickly started to remove the extender, only to look up and learn the pelican had moved even closer and was now too close to capture the whole bird with just 500mm. I stood there amazed as the pelican swam right up to my little dock and climbed on about ten feet away from me. We stood there staring at each other for a few me and then I switch my 500 to "macro" mode (closest focal point is 12 feet away). While I was doing this, my new friend backed up and allowed me some serious close ups of his head. I guess he was trying to tell me to quick looking at the Scaup (a duck) and start giving him some love too :).
