I've known our Gulf Shores' Eagles have been back for a couple of weeks now, but yesterday was the first time I have caught one of them on the nest. It was completely destroyed after last season, and the parents came back early this year and totally rebuilt it. Today I caught one adding some "furniture" to soften things up. It's good to see them back.

And so ended our first and longest day of our summer adventure, (19 hours on the road). As we were looking for our hotel, we came across this iconic piece of art, (Cadillac Ranch) in Amarillo, TX. We had to stop for a few memories.

This morning, I got the privilege of photographing a research project being conducted by Mississippi State University, in Gulf State Park (an other areas). The research students, Natasha Murphy and Sage Dale, "borrowed" some baby ospreys from their nest to band, weigh, measure, and do blood work on them. The birds were they returned to nest.
Something I found interesting was that the birds were extremely docile and would lay themselves as flat as they could on the blankets, to try to make themselves invisible. It was really cool to watch.
All required State and Federal Permits were acquired and complied with.

We have a very rare visitor in Gulf Shores right now, a "Magnificent Frigate". These pirates of the sky spend their entire lives on the wing, except when they they are nesting. They are one of only two species of birds that can sleep while flying. They earned their pirate nicknames because they are unable to fish for themselves. Instead, they will wait until another bird catches a fish and then they will repeatedly hit it, until it drops or regurgitates it. Then the frigate will swoop down can catch it as a falls from the sky. Did a mention they have a bigger wing span that our Bald Eagles and can reach around 7 feet! This bird was working from the Pier to Gulf Place while we were watching it.

I spend a lot of time on the roads of Orange Beach, late at night. One of my favorite views is Cotton Bayou on a calm night, with Turquoise Place and other condos/houses reflecting on the bayou. BTW, if you are out in the middle of the night right now, you may draw some unwanted attention.

BIG NEWS WITH OUR EAGLES! One of the eaglets has "fledged" or left the nest. It did a flyby while I was out there and then I found it sitting in a nearby tree. The second baby is doing some serious "hopping" as you can see in the last photo and it won't be long until it leaves too. If you haven't been out to see them lately, you better hurry (maintaining social distance of course).
