Red-winged blackbirds are pretty abundant around the wet areas of Gulf State Park right now. This one was singing along Beach Mouse Bypass.
Sleazy Facts: The Red-winged Blackbird is a highly polygynous species, meaning males have many female mates – up to 15 in some cases. In some populations 90 percent of territorial males have more than one female nesting on their territories. But all is not as it seems: one-quarter to one-half of nestlings turn out to have been sired by someone other than the territorial male. Ref: All about birds website

For me, the star of the show this weekend, wasn't an eagle at all. It was his gorgeous buck. One of the cool things about Guntersville State Park is it is covered up with dear that have no real fear of people. This makes from some great photo ops.

This one kind of reminds me of boot camp. Standing at attention, trying not to move, while gnats danced on my eyeballs.

It is rare to have waters and wind so calm that you don't get hardly any motion (except on that one boat) on boats moored in a marina. This is a 30 second exposure with only one boat moving. While the photo isn't one of my favorites, the fact it was taken really impresses me. Setting: 30 seconds, f/8, ISO 320, 50mm prime lens.

Just when you arachnophobia types thought it was safe to go to the beach. We came across this beautiful Santa Rosa Wolf Spider (Arctosa sanctaerosae) while we were on the beach the other night for the beach mouse trappings. Fear not though. I can assure you we were much more interested in it, that it was in us. Did you notice its eyes and the soft, white fur on its abdomen? It kind of makes you want to pet and cuddle with it, doesn't it :)?

I truly love the flags that Gulf Shores put up as a center-point for our elementary/middle schools. I think they do a great job of showing not only who we are, but who we should strive to be as well.

They have made some big changes to the Gulf State Park Pier, including a new observation platform. I managed to score a tour of it the other night, when all the lights were off. The stars were amazing out there.

We should have an eaglet(s) by now, but it will still be a little while before it can see over the side of the nest. I'm hoping for some clearer weather next week for another photo run.

We just got back from a great Eagle Weekend at Guntersville State Park. While the eagles showed up in force, they were all a little camera shy. I was, however able to get a lot of other pictures like this one that I was happy with.
For those of you that don't know, Wood Ducks like this male are EXTREMELY hard to get pictures of. I was able to get three quick shots of him through some brush, before something startled the female, causing them both to fly off.
If you haven't to Eagle Weekend yet, there is still time. I know they have at least one more this year. Give them a call.

Bucket List Shot... Almost. We had a great photography class today. After which I took the kids out to the beach to chase the sunset. One of my "bucket list" shots has always been to capture a silhouette of a wide open cast net with a fiery sunset behind it. The sunset wasn't quite what I hoped for, but this one was a fair start toward the bucket list :).
