Wild Red Kite at Argaty

(Calidris canutus)

There were so many little birds on the beach it was hard to pick out and focus on the one you wanted. I was able to get past all those fast moving little guy's to get a shot of the Multi Tagged Red Knot at Stone Harbor Point NJ.

Found this pair of birds, Red Bellied Woodpeckers, in a thicket that I have seen the Cardinals in. Last time there were some Eastern Downies, last week Northern Flickers, but they were too elusive. This pair were fltting from tree to tree and I was able to grab a few frames of un-cluttered views. I think this is the Male.

Diptera is the entire order of flies (including mosquitoes, midges, etc.), so I haven't gotten specific about the prey.

Sonnenaufgang über einer verträumten Knicklandschaft von Schleswig-Holstein. Die rote Färbung entsteht durch das Licht der aufgehenden Sonne im Nebeldunst.

Sunrise over a dreamy landscape of "Knicks" in Schleswig-Holstein. The red colouring is created by the light of the rising sun in the mist over the landscape.

In Schleswig-Holstein and Lower Saxony, the term "Knick" is used to describe wall-like hedges of trees and shrubs, which were created as early as the High and Late Middle Ages as land defences to fortify territories, and later also as "living fences".

A typical bend forms a relatively dense green "wall" of shrubs and isolated trees.

The rampart hedges along the path used to guide the animals during cattle drives and protect the adjacent fields against browsing or trampling by cattle.

Another visitor to the hanging bird feeders. Most of the birds out there come in (at least) twos, but this Woodpecker and another one always come alone.

My yard pics are always taken through the sliding glass back door. Which is now quite filthy after this winter! Even though I've cleaned the glass more than ever before. Within a week, it's got dirt! Anyhoo... Hope you like! ;-)

Red Crested Turaco

From Fun Facts

Turacos are the only birds to possess actual red and green pigments in their feathers. The red pigment (turacin) and green pigment (turacoverdin) both contain copper. When you look at most birds, the color you perceive is a reflection produced by their feather structure.

These birds have highly mobile outer toes that can rotate forward or backward.

They use their long tails for balance and their feet are very good at gripping.

These birds produce a call that sounds like "go way" which is why they are often referred to as Go-Away Birds.

These birds have a beautiful red crest, which stands about 5 cm (2 in.) high when excited.

A Red Fox cleaning ice and snow from its paw in the Arctic region of Alaska. The Red Fox is an oppurtunistic species that adapts quickly to new environments. Before the Trans-Alaskan Pipeline was built, there were no Red Fox in the Arctic. The Fox followed the workers north while the pipeline was being built, being fed by the workers both intentionally and not intentionally. While they can be elusive and shy, if one is patient enough, they will also become curious. This particular fox laid down by the photographer and cleaned itself for a good 20 minutes before heading off in search of food.

The linnet is a slim bird with a long tail. The upper parts are brown, the throat is sullied white and the bill is grey.

The summer male has a grey nape, red head-patch and red breast.

Females and young birds lack the red and have white underparts, the breast streaked buff.

Red Crowned Crane -

The red-crowned crane, also called the Manchurian crane, is a large East Asian crane among the rarest cranes in the world. In some parts of its range, it is known as a symbol of luck, longevity, and fidelity.

The Red-crowned Crane and Sandhill Crane are related; they are both members of the crane family (Gruidae), sharing ancient lineages, though they belong to different genera.

All cranes are omnivorous, per Johnsgard, the two most common crane species today (the sandhill and common cranes) are among the most herbivorous species while the two rarest species (the red-crowned and whooping cranes) are perhaps the most carnivorous species. When feeding on plants, red-crowned cranes exhibit a preference for plants with a high content of crude protein and low content of crude fiber.
