Soo Line GP30 700 sits at Belknap Street in Superior after coming back from traction motor work at ILS. Interestingly it is coupled to a former Soo SD60. Thanks to Kent for the heads up and Gus for taking this shot out the back window as I drove across the bridge.

this woman who was born with some birth defects wanted pictures of her friends and their families. She wanted actual pictures that you could hold in your hand. She is kind of a leader in her community and she helped in showing us the places nobody from the outside would see, much less photograph.

Piccadilly Circus, together with Leicester Square and Trafalgar Square, is one of the most famous squares in London. Regardless of the time, it is always pleasantly busy at Piccadilly Circus. It is best known for its huge video screens with advertising and dazzling neon lighting. The square is therefore regularly compared to another famous square with neon signs, Times Square in New York.

This hexagonal ice crystal showcases dendritic branching and stellar symmetry—hallmarks of atmospheric crystallography. Formed under specific humidity and temperature conditions, its beveled edges and central star-like nodes reveal the physics of phase transitions in frozen water vapor.

When the Frostsmith’s forge still burned among the clouds, and the winds themselves were his bellows, two apprentices labored beneath the still sky. They were young, yet seasoned by silence — for in the realm of cold, one learned not through words, but through listening.

The master, whose eyes mirrored the pale light of the pole, set before them a task both humble and impossible:

“Shape for me two snowflakes,” he said, “that shall not merely fall — but speak.”

For days uncounted, the apprentices studied the breath of frost as it gathered on the forge’s edge, tracing how each crystal grew by harmony, not command. One worked with boldness — striking sparks from the frozen anvil, carving deep, daring facets that caught every glint of light. The other worked with patience — polishing edges until they sang, weaving delicate lattices fine as breath on glass.

At last, they placed their works before the master: two snowflakes, each unlike the other, yet bound by an invisible symmetry of spirit. He gazed long upon them, and then smiled — that rare, quiet smile that cracked the frost on his beard.

“You have understood,” he whispered. “The craft of cold is not to conquer form, but to release it. Each flake carries within it the shape of its own becoming.”

He quenched them in the breath of dawn, where rime formed instantly — sealing their patterns in a thin armor of frozen mist, and named them Echo and Answer, for their symmetry held the dialogue of creation itself.

And as they drifted into the world below, the apprentices watched them go, knowing they would melt before anyone could hold them.

But that was the lesson.

Creation, the master had said, is not measured by how long it endures.

u can really realize the real luv by eyes and heart

I spotted this Mallard on one of the ponds at Jackman Wetlands. Is it real or is it a decoy? They do Retriever training at the park and this may be one of their devices. Or is it some poor duck stuck in mesh from the traps used by the CWHC to trap birds for checking for avian flu?

The Contaflex 35mm twin-lens reflex of 1935, one of the most expensive cameras of its day and the first camera to include a built-in photo-electric light-meter - the cell is behind the flip-up name-plate. It briefly preceded the first 35mm SLR, the Exakta (1936). Interchangeable taking lenses were available ranging from 35mm (with a special finder) through the 85mm and 135mm focal lengths (there were markings on the ground glass to show the appropriate crop). I believe I saw a wide-angle and a tele adapter, both of which sported a viewing and a taking lens, many years ago at a Vienna camera dealer's. Behind the camera we see the original repair manual.

I apologise for a smart-phone shot, but I can't resist posting this for my flickr friends!

An illusion within an illusion. The bright spot in the mouth of the hanging lampshade that appears to be the bulb, is itself an image, formed by the inner spherical surface of the shade.
