El milano real, rapaz de mediano tamaño, presenta un plumaje en el que dominan los tonos rojizos, profusamente rayados de oscuro en las regiones ventrales y con un característico aspecto orlado en el dorso debido a los bordes pálidos de las coberteras alares. La cabeza y el cuello, por su parte, presentan un tono gris pálido surcado por finas estrías muy oscuras. En vuelo resulta inconfundible, no solo por la extraordinaria habilidad con la que ejecuta todo tipo de maniobras y regates, sino por poseer una silueta característica, en la que destacan una cola profundamente ahorquillada, de color rojizo anaranjado, y unas largas alas acodadas y provistas de una mancha blanca muy visible. Cuando está posado, también resulta fácil diferenciarlo de otras rapaces de tamaño similar, además de por la forma de la cola, por poseer una figura bastante estilizada.

A sólo una hora de La Paz, yendo hacia el norte, nos encontramos frente a frente con la majestuosa e imponente Cordillera Real de los Andes, con nevados de alturas que fluctúan entre 5.500 mts. y 6.500 mts. sobre el nivel de mar y conforman una cadena montañosa de 600 nevados que se suceden en una longitud aproximada de 200 Kms. Dividen el altiplano a 4.000 mts. de altura y la región amazónica a 500 mts.

The Bardenas Reales is a pseudo-steppe landscape sculpted over millions of years due to erosion. Just 70 kilometres away from the peaks of the Pyrenees , and very close to the main town in La Ribera, Tudela
