it is assumed that Gorinchem was founded circa 1000 CE by fishermen and farmers on the raised land near the mouth of the river Linge at the Merwede. (Home of Gorik) is first mentioned in a document from 1224 in which Floris IV granted people from Gorinchem exemption of toll payments throughout Holland.

Somewhere between 1247 and 1267, Gorinchem became property of the Lords of Arkel. At the end of the 13th century earthen mounts reinforced with palisades were built around the settlement to protect it from domination by the neighboring counties of Holland and Gelre. Half a century later real city walls were built complete with 7 gates and 23 watchtowers. Otto van Arkel granted it city rights on 11 November 1322.

Jan van Arkel had a dispute with Albert I, brother of Willem V of Holland, leading to war and subsequently to the annexation of Gorinchem to Holland in 1417. This resulted in increased trade and Gorinchem grew to be the eighth city of Holland.

On 9 July 1572, the Watergeuzen (Dutch rebels against Spanish rule) conquered the city and captured 19 Catholic priests and monks. Because they refused to renounce their faith, these priests and monks were brought to Brielle where they were hanged and were from then on known among Catholics as the Martyrs of Gorkum.

By the 16th century, the city walls were so deteriorated that they were replaced with new fortifications and eleven bastions that still are almost completely intact. The new walls were completed in 1609 and were located further from the town centre, making the city twice as large. In 1673, Gorinchem became part of the old Dutch Water Line.

The city walls had four city gates: the Arkel Gate in the north, the Dalem Gate in the east, the Water Gate in the south (where the ferry to Woudrichem was), and the Kansel Gate in the west. Of these four gates, only the Dalem Gate remains. The others were removed in the 19th century to make way for vehicular traffic. A portion of the Water Gate was preserved in the gardens of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.

Burn every fear, every doubt like a funeral fire

Scream every anthem and follow your reckless desires

Take back the crown that hangs at the gate

Ready your march, steady your aim

For the heart is a soldier that never loses its way

So raise your horns

Raise 'em high

Let 'em soar

Let 'em fly

Up through the heavens

Forevermore

Let 'em reign down

Raise your horns

Sing every verse, every sermon, for the dead are unheard

Shout from the rooftops while you still live every word

'Cause the pendulum swings for those who dare wait

Through flesh and through bone to where nothing escapes

So follow true north on the road that will lead you away

And raise your horns

Raise 'em high

Let 'em soar

Let 'em fly

Up through the heavens

Forevermore

Let 'em reign down

Raise your horns

Forgive every fear that convinced you to put out your light

Show every flaw, every scar that this world made you hide

From who you are

From who you are, are, are, are

Raise your horns

Raise 'em high

Let 'em soar

Let 'em fly

Up through the heavens

Forevermore

Let 'em rain down

Raise your horns

Let 'em rain down

Raise your horns

Let 'em rain down

Raise your horns

🎵"Star rider" - HÄLLAS🎵

This week's theme for Mosaic Montage Monday was Raised. Blossoms are blooming and yesterday's snow gave them some extra dimension. HMMM!

The Great Crested Grebe nestles between April and July. At this time, adults wear a double crest and brown atria framing the head. During the complex courtship, the male and the female face each other and raise the neck. They swim together, rub their necks while emitting loud cries, dive and then reappear, one of them having algae to another. The couple stands still, chest to chest, and each bird turns its head on one side then the other. This ride can continue even when grebes are busy building the nest. The latter consists mainly of algae. It can rest on a muddy bottom but it is designed in principle to be flush with the surface. It can also float but is then stowed to a stump or a bundle of plants intermingled. Adults fill the shallow cut of plants that cover the eggs if adults are absent from the nest. The egg is composed of 3 to 6 white eggs which turn brown then become more discreet. Adult convent by taking turns every few hours. The hatching occurs after 28 days. The young are able to swim immediately but remain dependent on their parents for several weeks.

Grey-crowned Babbler

Scientific Name: Pomatostomus temporalis

Description: The Grey-crowned Babbler is the largest of Australia's four babbler species. It is dark brown-grey above, with a distinctive grey crown stripe and a dark face mask that contrasts with a white eyebrow. The chin and throat are white, running into a pale grey lower breast. It has a long, curved bill, short rounded wings with cinnamon brown wing patches and a long tail tipped white. The eye is pale yellow in adults. There is a darker-coloured subspecies, rubeculus, in north-western Australia (often called the Red-breasted Babbler), that has a rufous lower breast and darker crown stripe. The Grey-crowned Babbler is a noisy and gregarious bird, usually found in small groups of four to twelve, and is often seen on the ground or in low trees. It is sometimes called the Yahoo, after one of its calls.

Similar species: The Grey-crowned Babbler lacks the dark crown of other babblers and has a yellow rather than a dark eye.

Distribution: The Grey-crowned Babbler is widespread throughout north-western, northern, central and eastern Australia. It is also found in Papua New Guinea.

Habitat: The Grey-crowned Babbler is found in open forests and woodlands, favouring inland plains with an open shrub layer, little ground cover and plenty of fallen timber and leaf litter. May be seen along roadsides and around farms. In south-east Melbourne, small populations survive on golf courses.

Seasonal movements: Sedentary.

Feeding: Grey-crowned Babblers feed on insects and other invertebrates and sometimes eat seeds. They forage in groups of two to fifteen birds on the ground among leaf litter, around fallen trees and from the bark of shrubs and trees (they tend to use trees more than other babblers).

Breeding: Grey-crowned Babblers live and breed in co-operative territorial groups of two to fifteen birds (usually four to twelve). Groups normally consist of a primary breeding pair along with several non-breeding birds (sometimes groups may contain two breeding pairs or two females that both breed). Most members of the group help to build nests, with the primary female contributing the most effort. Two types of nest are built: roost-nests (usually larger and used by the whole group) and brood-nests (for the breeding females), and often old nest sites are renovated and re-used from year to year. The large domed nests are placed in a tree fork 4 m - 7 m high and are made of thick sticks with projections that make a hood and landing platform for the entrance tunnel. The nest chamber is lined with soft grass, bark, wool and feathers. The brooding female (sometimes more than one) is fed by the other group members and all help to feed the nestlings. Larger groups tend to raise more young, and two broods are usually raised per season.

Calls: Loud scolding and chattering calls: 'wee-oo'. Also distinctive 'ya-hoo' duet by breeding female ('yah') and male ('ahoo') repeated six to eight times.

Minimum Size: 25cm

Maximum Size: 29cm

Average size: 27cm

Average weight: 81g

Breeding season: July to February

Clutch Size: Usually two to three, up to five if more than one female.

Incubation: 23 days

Nestling Period: 23 days

The last roundup in Three Forks, MT. A beautiful thing to have witnessed.

A fan favourite since 2011. 🎃

Disclaimer: No cats were harmed in the making of this photograph.

Like many species of birds, blue jays change their behavior from summer, when breeding birds live in pairs, to winter, when they often gather in groups. ... In summer, blue jays feed and raise their young mostly on insects, while in winter, they shift to fruits, nuts, and seeds.
