The Thayer was rechristened on August 20, 2016 after the second phase of restoration which involved installing new masts and rigging.

BR Standard 4 No. 75069 crosses Oldbury viaduct on the Severn Valley railway. The Standard was working a train from Bridgnorth-Bewdley - this being the final weekend of operations before the winter shutdown.
And I thought Halloween was over with. But this Christmas day Urbex drive-by was a great-looking Detroit view present find on Grand River Ave.

All those who have played cricket & scored a century must have experienced one particular feeling. As soon as you reach the magical three-figure mark & you raise the bat, there is this sudden warm rush up the neck. Whoosh! There is a surge of blood that flows up your neck & face to such a happy feeling that is unexplainable any other way but to get a hundred & feel it.
Completing the Everest Base Camp gave me the same rush. The afterglow that makes you want it again. You realize that the addiction for a game, sports, achieving a particular goal is obsessive & you want your fix again.

As a photographer, I feel like there's this unspoken list of famous photographs that everybody wants to re-create in some way :P
Raising The Flag On Iwo Jima is one of those photos :)
The original, which I'm sure we're all familiar with, media.npr.org/assets/img/2016/05/03/ap_16123758999616_cus... was taken by Joe Rosenthal in 1945, at the top of Mount Suribachi, during the Battle of Iwo Jima, in World War II.
I'm not going to go all super-history-buff on you, but essentially Rosenthal was a member of the Associated Press via US Army and Marine Corps and was tasked with documenting life aboard ships across the British Isles and North Africa.
The Photo itself was taken in February to be published in US Newspapers the following Sunday. The wiki article has a great story of him and his fellow Photographers reaching the top of the Mount to capture the image! I recommend it if you find the time! Also, Fun Fact: This wasn't the first flag to be raised on Mount Suribachi, but the second :P

Anyway, the original photograph became a Pulitzer Prize winner in the years to follow and was a symbol to the American people as a sign of hope (or victory, depending on who you talk to).
After the battle for Iwo Jima was over and was won to the US, the photo was used for posters in war bond drives through over 30 cities from May through July (1945) which raised 26.3 billion dollars! :O
There was even a Memorial built by these two lads in 1954 (Felix de Weldon (sculptor) & Horace W. Pealee (architect))
Mind you, this isn't the first time the JSA has raised the flag, but if I had to say, I'm inspired a little by George Zapata's piece depicting the scene static0.cbrimages.com/wp-content/uploads/goodcomics/2011/...
So with all that in mind, I managed to pick up FunnyBrick's Starman, and really wanted to do something different with my JSA this time around! I mentioned this on Patreon with my “Semi-Review” of the fig; FunnyBrick is quickly becoming one of my favorite Custom Printers out there! I have many more projects with their figs on the way.... Kid Flash and Ares to name a few ;)
But yeah... I don't know. I wanted to do something a little out of the norm for me and it culminated in the form of a re-creation (like my work always tends to do).
Also, something kind of interesting that occurred to me over on Patreon; we've got FunnyBrick and UG from Taiwan, Christo from South Africa, and GL from ParisCustomBricks, all to recreate an iconic American piece of art photographed in Japan via a Danish Toy Brand! :P

The Juniper Queen
For the past six consecutive years, I have been blessed to travel with friends to Central Florida to fish, tell lies, unwind and most importantly, to photograph. For half of those visits, hurricanes have played both major and minor roles on when or even if we could go. A lady named Irma, toppled ancient trees and raising the water level for months to follow, hit this area hard a year ago last month. Our yearly October 2017 trip was canceled and rescheduled for April 2018.
Arriving seven months after Irma’s wrath, her impact remained evident both above and below the waters surface. It was during our first trip to the mouth of the Juniper River that I noticed her once again sitting high above her domain, the Juniper Queen. I had reached a point in our relationship that I almost expected her to be there for my arrival. On each of my previous visits I would photograph her as we passed under her to get to our favorite fishing holes, but on this April day, something was noticeably different. After taking a few shots, I cropped into the shot on the back of my camera to better see what was catching my eye.
Sadness quickly became the mood of the moment as I viewed her portrait; it was evident that this old girl had been battered about severely. Feathers from the top of her head were missing and her normally brilliant white majestic head was several shades of gray. She had several wing and chest feathers protruding at all available angles, she just looked sick. The only good news was that she was still with us, holding firmly to her spot.
Wondering what could have torn her up like that, my mind turned quickly to Irma and the battle for survival that must have taken place with all of God’s creatures in a hurricane. I pictured her riding out Irma right there; in her spot with the same attitude and gusto of Lt. Dan riding out the hurricane in Forest Gump, asking along the way “is this all you got?” Her photos from last April were so sad, I’m pretty sure that I simply deleted them. No lady wants her picture taken looking so poorly.
Earlier this month, as we cut across Lake George heading for the Juniper River, I could see from a distance that she was still there, holding her own…a blessing for us both. With the dark skies of one of Hurricane Michaels last bands behind her I took this shot. Looking so much better, so much stronger and as they say “Large and in charge” the queen was in fact back and in charge of her domain, with her newly developed head feathers protruding like a much deserved crown.
Walking around at home, after the last few wet days I have a huge variety of mushrooms popping up around the place. I don't know what any of them are, but there are several that are very interesting and photogenic.
Too many coffee shops these days look like an office, people come in with their laptops, buy one cup of coffee and spend way too much time on the computers and spend a limited amount of money. I would raise the price of coffee and refills for these people, limit their time to a maximum of one hour and make a rule of no computers during peak times, like 11 am to 1 pm. Business is business! Glad it's not my problem.
