Binalong Railway Precinct
Statement of Significance:
The station building at Binalong is unusual, being a country railway station located on an island platform and built to a design normally associated with suburban station buildings. It is rare for such an arrangement to be used at a relatively minor country location. The topography and layout of the yard is also unusual, with the station and yard elements located on a curved section of track that is cut into the side of an embankment on the Up side of the line.
Historical Notes:
Rail services at Binalong were officially opened on 1 November 1876 with a loop on the Up side, platform, waiting shed and temporary booking office (all located south of the present station building). Other early or original structures at Binalong included a goods shed (1876), enginemen’s rest house (relocated from Bowning, 1876), stockyards (1877), a gatehouse (1877), toilets (1881), name board (1881), 3 tonne yard crane (1883), and a weighbridge (1890). In 1878 the yard crane was transferred to Gunning. In 1883 the old ticket office was removed and a new station building erected and in 1884 the platform was lengthened (Forsyth, 1989).
Other major changes or additions in the late 19th and early 20th century included station interlocking in 1891, the introduction of a wool loading crane (1891), construction of an overbridge (1898), extension of the platform (1907), and the addition of a wool loading bank (1910). The second station building (located on an island platform) opened 22 December 1915 in conjunction with the duplication of the line. Other changes and additions at Binalong in c1915 included a signal box, Up and Down refuge sidings and locomotive watering facilities. A wheat stacking site was provided in 1917, with other additions including an ash pit in the Up refuge siding (1923) and automatic signals (1920) (Forsyth, 1989).
The station building closed in November 1989.

NIR 4015 departs Whitehead with the 1045 to Belfast Great Victoria Street.
Previously the line was double track between Belfast and Whitehead, before the single line section to Larne. However in the 1990s the up line was removed from Whitehead to Kilroot for safety reasons, leaving the line Whitehead station as a passing loop. Just to the left of the railcar, the former trackbed of the up-line can be seen.

Badge of the Compagnie Internationale des Wagons-Lits on dining car 1883 at the Eisennbahnmuseum Bochum-Dahlhausen in Bochum, Germany.
The Compagnie Internationale des Wagons-Lits, headquartered in Brussel, was founded in 1876 to apply the successfull business model of the Pullman sleeping cars in Europe. In cooperation with state railway companies, CIWL operated luxury trains troughout Western and Central Europe and the Balkans, including the famous Orient Express. During WWI, the international train travel came to an end and the CIWS assets in Germany and Austria-Hungary were taken over by the newly formed MITROPA.
These children, many of which appear to be in the Korean Youth Corps are waiting for the next train. What is life really like inside North Korea? In many ways, not so different than life elsewhere. Except, if you're in the US, would you trust your child to ride the train alone? Over time, I think that answer has become less and less likely to be "Yes."
