Near the Yangon Central Railway Station, abandoned rail cars slowly waste away. It's downtown Yangon, the station being the largest in the country, yet the jungle looks ready to to take over the area if only it can be neglected a little longer. A city ready to break out into the international stage and quickly developing, but some parts of its past are still close to home.

Riding the train is in itself a bit of a tourist destination. A fleeting glimmer looking into the daily life of the Burmese that depend on rail transit. It's people watching, but taken to the touristic level where people come and go, transporting their goods or their children. Everyone playing a part in the larger story that's waiting to be told if only more people would visit and see the country for themselves.

The introduction of the new corporate identity for British Railways was part of the 'new age' of railway modernisation that as well as the massive closures and withdrawal programme that was given added impetus under the 'Beeching Report' also saw a more targeted investment programme than the earlier and utimately doomed 'Modernisation Programme' of the British Transport Commission. British Railways became British Rail and with it came the loss of the use of the Gill Sans typeface that had been primarily used since 1948 and a new logo designed by Gerry Barney of the Design Research Unit, the agency that oversaw the rebranding in great detail. This included the new Rail Alphabet designed by Margaret Clavert and Jock Kinneir who had also introduced the new Transport typeface to the nation as part of the overhaul of the UK's road signs under the Worboys Report.

As part of the marketing of this new corporate identity an exhibition was held at the Design Centre in London in January 1965. The poster and the accompanying leaflet.

The CL class is a class of diesel locomotives built by Clyde Engineering, Granville for the Commonwealth Railways in several batches between 1970 and 1972. The class was the last in the world to be built with the Electro-Motive Diesel bulldog nose but differed from previous builds in having a mansard roof.

New Brighton Station showing, soon to be introduced, Class 777 METRO EMU No. 777013 on an open day to the general public, along side Class 507 EMU No. 507005.

The new Class 777's have been purchased by Merseytravel and leased to Mersyrail to replace the existing Class 507's and 508's, most of which are over 42 years old.

A total of 52 sets have been ordered and are manufactured by Stadler Rail in Switzerland. Each set consists of four carriages, as opposed to 507/8's which are three carriage sets, allowing greater capacity on the network.

Pacific National's MW2 (once dedicated) steel train produced the eyecatching combination of four different classes of locomotive today. London Paddington Station

My first photo upload of 2012 here on Flickr although its from last year. A slight variation on the theme of London Underground but still transport related.

I took this whist passing through the station. The thing that caught my eye is the pink doors that First Great Western have on there trains and how they were regimentally left open compared to the other train on the other platform where they were all closed. Also the stunning Isambard Kingdom Brunel architecture juxtaposed with the straight leading lines of the trains in the platforms is simply stunning.

Well thats all for now but I hope all my friends and followers have a brilliant 2012 and remember....keep them photos coming! :-)

Information

Paddington railway station also known as London Paddington is a central London railway terminus and London Underground complex.

The site is a historic one, having served as the London terminus of the Great Western Railway and its successors since 1838. Much of the current mainline station dates from 1854, and was designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel. The site was first served by Underground trains in 1863, and was the original western terminus of the Metropolitan Railway, the world's first underground railway.

The complex has recently been modernised, and now has an additional role as the London terminal for the dedicated Heathrow Express airport service. Paddington is in Travelcard Zone 1.

The mainline station's most important long-distance destinations are Bristol, Cheltenham Spa, Cardiff, Exeter, Penzance, Plymouth and Swansea

On the southern approaches to Crewe station in Cheshire, a Direct Rail Services Class 66 on a northbound intermodal freight is overtaken by a Virgin Trains Class 390 Pendolino on the adjacent fast line working a service to the north of England. With the frequency of freight on this route, especially south of Crewe, scenes like this are commonplace, with the 75mph Class 66's, Class 86's, Class 90's and Class 92's having little hope to match the speed of the 125mph Class 390's and Class 221's.
