Rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus)

In the neighbor's yard.

I am staying in this hotel in Rhode Island that has this large 30 acres field with this small copse of trees in the middle. There are a few dozen rabbits living here. I decided I would go out and survey them just before sundown.

April 27, 2010: Nah, it's harmless... though the dandelions in my yard don't stand a chance.

As you can see, it's not afraid of people unless they walk right up to it. When I get too close, the bunny hops away, and all I can see is its cute white tail bouncing away.

I was attempting to photograph the Stawamus Chief, a popular rock climbing area near Squamish, from a better perspective, but instead found myself taking pictures of bunnies!

This rabbit hunkers down in its nest.

More a landscape person, I'm trying to practice my wildlife photography skills. This cottontail was very cooperative with my efforts! : )

Why can't we come out?

It was a sunny afternoon. There were at least five rabbits eating grass outside. I was born in the Year of the Rabbit. So I loved cute rabbits so much. For an hour, I chased rabbits around and tried to take their pictures. They are unpredictable and agile. So I used 1/640 shutter speed to freeze their movements. To get enough exposure, I used f/4.0 as aperture and ISO 1600.

During post-processing. I first open all these pictures in Photoshop. Then, I copied all of them into one window as different layers. After that, I used the feature "Auto-Align" to align the background and cropped excessive unmatched backgrounds in each layer. Later, I used mask mode along with the brush tool to select the objects in picture 2 and 3. After selecting the objects, I deleted everything else. Therefore, the things left are the background in the first image and three rabbits from three images.

A child's stuffed rabbit left in a junkyard after a car crash. Many of these abandoned items have a story to tell. Unfortunately most of the stories don't have happy endings.
