This woman didn't hesitate to grab the plastic bag out of Capitol lake! I was amazed that she didn't get wet.

pearly brought a live hummingbird into the house this morning, which got stuck for hours in the big kitchen skylight, where i couldn't reach it -- finally managed to get it tangled in some bird netting & got it outside -- it rested in my hand for a few minutes, then flew away.
We spent a few hours this afternoon with our dear friend Louisa, who rescues large farm animals when they are on their way to slaughter. She keeps them for the rest of their lives.
Somebody asked for an update on the midget hammies, so here we go.
That's Molly up there, super-mom, single-handedly raised two litters. And now she's free! Except for one, all her kids have gone off to new homes.
The San Diego Zoo is allowing guests to get a rare view into a special place, where some of the smaller multi-legged creatures of the world are rescued. The Arachnid Rescue Center is a section of the Zoo devoted to the care and feeding of invertebrate animals rescued from wildlife trafficking.
“Arachnids face the same threats as all other animals, and illegal smuggling is among them,” said Paige Howorth, San Diego Zoo entomologist. “Most people don’t realize that wildlife trafficking can affect all taxa, including arachnids and other invertebrates.”
The center is home to more than 65 individual arachnids, representing 19 species. Most of the spiders are tarantulas that came to the Zoo after being confiscated from smugglers. Wildlife trafficking, or the illegal poaching and smuggling of animals, plants or their parts, has become a serious conservation issue in the last few years. As wildlife officials work to stem the illegal trade, many accredited zoos, like San Diego Zoo Global, are providing sanctuary for the individual animals that are rescued by authorities.
In addition to tarantulas and scorpions, the center also maintains lesser-known arachnids such as whip spiders and vinegaroons. Guests at the San Diego Zoo’s Children’s Zoo can see the multi-legged residents, and the people who care for them, through large glass windows at the Arachnid Rescue Center.
Bringing species back from the brink of extinction is the goal of San Diego Zoo Global. As a leader in conservation, the work of San Diego Zoo Global includes on-site wildlife conservation efforts (representing both plants and animals) at the San Diego Zoo, San Diego Zoo Safari Park, and San Diego Zoo Institute for Conservation Research, as well as international field programs on six continents. The work of these entities is inspiring children through the San Diego Zoo Kids network, reaching out through the Internet and in children’s hospitals nationwide. The work of San Diego Zoo Global is made possible by the San Diego Zoo Global Wildlife Conservancy and is supported in part by the Foundation of San Diego Zoo Global.
in iceland last summer we traveled to a small island covered with nesting puffins. the island had formerly been used to graze sheep and several old foundations are left from small storage houses. the foundations are 10 feet deep, and maybe 12 foot square. the fisherman who guided us around the island says he checks the foundations every trip because the puffins come off the cliffs and often bounce along the grass on their way to the water. when they land in these foundations the holes are too deep and the dimensions too small for them to get up enough room to take off and they are stuck. with no easy way to cover the foundations, this guy carries a ladder on his boat, good gloves and makes his rounds to provide daily rescue to these guys.

Another one of the baby rats my friend has currently available for adoption at the rescue. This one is a gorgeous agouti colour; I have such a soft spot for agouti. I know some people don't like it, because it's so similar to the colour of wild rats, but I adore it. :)

Rescued this ariel who, must be the laptop camera making her look good, is actually worse than she appears to be. Dressed her in some other outfit so she looked half decent for this photo, she's been poorly treated.
If you look really closely she has matted hair, a lost fringe, missing (deceptively thick looking) hair plugs, dirty nose and marks on face and no thumb.
I've already started working on getting her hair manageable and have thought about whether she needs rebodying or if there is a way to rebuild her thumb
I have no idea how to do that or what body type would match her head. She probably would need a reroot as well, may think about turning her into a sister, but there's only one ariel!
I'd really appreciate it if anyone has any tips or ideas to help restore her :)

A macro series. Why? Just because. Just because this boy is a wonderful model and the current plan is for Boris to leave for his forever home tomorrow afternoon. Just because I couldn't resist uploading more photos of this gorgeous boy.
All photos clickable as always.
I think my favorites are #2 and #8. Bummer that his fangs aren't peeking out.
